LCARS as we know it in the series and movies (I don't even remember what everything looked like in the new movie) is outdated and boring. It's like a 90s website with the ninja kicking baby. Plus the GUI for the whole thing was always HORRIBLE, text ridden and made no freakin' sense.
I'd like to see someone make a better, updated, newer, streamlined, LCARS with a user interface that makes sense and doesn't suck. I could have a similar style and colors but seriously... it's just aged.
it only never made sense because it was never thruoughly explained. it's always been meant to just look cool. so which aspects are you referring you? there's the generic two-section panel with a small upper and a big lower screen... and then there are panels, like the bridge and engineering controls, that are optimized to display certain readouts and controls. but any screen can be overridden to display any control, if necessary.
we have the technology now to do it, but its a long way off from being standard. LCARS is still by far way advanced compared to what we have now. we're still using a keyboard and mouse. and i've tried the touch screen computers from HP and stuff... they are neat but it's not as good as you'd think. what they need to come up with is a touch screen keyboard and leave the monitor alone.
Doesn't something need to be invented before it can be out dated?
I mean it's not like that reto stuff from the 50-60, where the car of the future was designed in the past then in the present (their future relatively speaking) out cars, kitchens and vacuum cleaners look and act nothing like that. I mean how many people actually own chromed out roomba with a flying goddess nose ornament?
If anything, I'd say it's an over complicated, if not awesome, idea that's simply not necessary under most circumstances. When flying a Star ship, it might be cool and useful, from what I can gather, the interface is fully customizable and touch and voice responsive, it would actually be a pretty cool interface to use.
** brings in three dancing monkeys * << Are you happy about this Capulet >>
i thought LCARS was a System that could be personalised for the user at each station, so that in a sense was a way that the actors could press there greasy fingers onto the props in any way and get away with it
Gotta go with OP here. That was always the one thing that annoyed me about Trek. Even when I was younger watching TNG when it ran, I always felt they were insulting my inteligence when they looked at a Tricorder or screen that showed NO TEXT at all, yet were able to generate full descriptive sentences by what they were looking at. I was always thinking, "are they looking at what IM looking at? WHERE are they getting that?" lol The funny thing about LCARS is that the design and implementation was so damn lazy by the production team, yet even now, for games and interface screens, it just isnt Trek without it. For me, its a Catch 22, lol.
Hmmmm I wonder how hort's padd interface would look if he were stationed on Voyager...
::begin dream sequence::
"Oh, hello Seven. I brought you the cargo manifest you requested." "Ensign Hort, this padd is covered in pictures of me. This is inefficient. Why have you done this?"
"It's *very* efficient! Look at my morale! I was putting together that boring manifest, and whereas most crewmen would have taken a break, I kept working through the night because I saw that picture of you and knew just how happy it'd make you to get this manifest quickly!" "I... see, Ensign. <awkward silence> Why are you still here?"
::end dream sequence::
Man, hort's dreams suck.
You know that's how Wesley's padds looked, though.

It was a very pretty (but kind of kitschy) miracle UI that can do anything in under three taps.
