This is what North Queensland is preparing for today .....

- Google News -
- CNN News -
- Bureau of Meteorology (with map) -
  • Cyclone "Yasi" Cat 5
  • Will still be Cat 2 when 400 kilometres inland.
  • Likely the most devistating Cyclone ever experienced in Australia
  • 295 kph (183 mph)
  • Torrential rain will increase waters 2 meters above the usual high tide line

Experts are saying this will be more devistation that Cyclone Tracy that wiped our Darwin in 1974. For those that dont know ....

Tracy killed 71 people, caused $837 million in damage and destroyed more than 70 percent of Darwin's buildings, including 80 percent of houses. Tracy left more than 41,000 out of the 47,000 inhabitants of the city homeless prior to landfall and required the evacuation of over 30,000 people

This is just after recent January Floods where more than 20 people died and thousands of homes were wrecked when severe flooding hit Queensland in January, affecting 3.1 million people. Eestimated AUS $5.6 billion (US $5.58 billion) damage caused.

ps. I am far-far away from there

I feel so sorry for those people who are going to be affected by this, and so soon after the flooding as well

Well - this will be hitting north QLD, the floods were south...

I'm sure i've seen a demotivational poster that describes Australia at the moment (floods, floods, floods, on fire, effing hot - pretty much effd)

It will be interesting to see how the areas go - the place isn't made of Fibro (like Darwin was when Tracy hit), but it should still suffer a bit of damage.

And LilRaveGirl - you must be a West Australian :p

SEVERE TC YASI IS A LARGE AND VERY POWERFUL TROPICAL CYCLONE AND POSES AN EXTREMELY SERIOUS THREAT TO LIFE AND PROPERTY WITHIN THE WARNING AREA, ESPECIALLY BETWEEN CAIRNS AND TOWNSVILLE.

THIS IMPACT IS LIKELY TO BE MORE LIFE THREATENING THAN ANY EXPERIENCED DURING RECENT GENERATIONS.

TC Yasi, CATEGORY 5, will continue to move in a west-southwesterly direction during the day. The cyclone is expected to cross the coast in the Innisfail area at about midnight.

Coastal residents within the warning area, and particularly between Cairns and Ayr are specifically warned of an EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SEA LEVEL RISE [i.e. storm tide] as the cyclone approaches, crosses the coast and moves inland. The sea is likely to steadily rise up to a level which will be VERY DANGEROUSLY above the normal tide, with EXTREMELY DAMAGING WAVES, STRONG CURRENTS and FLOODING of low-lying areas extending some way inland. People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding should take measures to protect their property as much as possible, and be prepared to follow instructions regarding evacuation of the area if advised to do so by authorities.

DAMAGING WINDS with gusts to 90 km/hr that are currently developing on coastal islands, are forecast to develop about the coast by late morning and about the tropical interior overnight.

Between Cape Tribulation and Ingham these winds will become DESTRUCTIVE with gusts in excess of 125km/hr during the afternoon and early evening and VERY DESTRUCTIVE with gusts up to 300 km/hr between Cairns and Ingham during the evening as the cyclone approaches and crosses the coast. These VERY DESTRUCTIVE winds can also occur on the seaward side of hills to the north of the cyclone and are also forecast to reach the Atherton Tablelands.

Winds are forecast to ease about the east coast during Thursday morning as the cyclone moves inland.

FLOODING RAINS will develop from Cooktown to Sarina during the afternoon and then extend inland overnight.

i LIVE IN TOWNSVILLE AND ALREADY BRANCHES ARE BREAKING AND THE RAIN IS GOING SIDEWAYS *QLD HAS GOT BATTERED ENOUGH SE FLOODS NOW THIS IM BATTERING DOWN AND GETING READY FOR 280KM/HR WINDS AND STORM SURGES.

Wish Nrth QLD good luck :(

As an Englishman, you know, one of the "pommies"

I do feel tremendously sorry for our Aussie cousins. Perhaps this is some sort of God way to make you pay for not winning the Ashes, second time of asking :p

But seriously. I have family over there myself and despite being no where near QLD they still have huge winds and rainfall. The next week is going to suck if your an Aussie, more so, if your an Ocker

er - Tracy broke the meter at 217km/hr and was estimated to have wind speeds of up to 300km/hr...

(anything that can force a 4x2 wooden beam through a concrete wall is up there in wind speed)

However, cyclone Tracy could fit in the eye of Cyclone Yasi...

You realise those are the same size? the second one is possible smaller since that image is a massive zoom in.

My grandma, aunt and cousins are there and didn't seem very concerned at all.

This is very bad. Apparently the Weather Gods hate Australia.

On the other hand this is very good as the company I work for makes electrical power-line repair parts and we just got a HUGE order from Down Under.

Take care, Aussie friends. Know that you're being thought of and let's hope that this doesn't affect folks too much. My thoughts and hopes go out to all of you great people in Australia.
