I got my joystick setup for maximum ground carnage. WOOT. Death to all who step in front of me.
Starship control is made MUCH easier if you have someone operate the keyboard with while you pilot the ship. Just spent two hours tooling around blasting Orions.
Of course I can operate everything myself (boo) but it's much more fun when I have a "crewmember" next to me.
The original plan Perpetual had was to have ships as multi-user "hubs". If memory serves, one player would be in charge of weapons, one would run navigation, one would be the chief Engineer, etc, etc.
1. Ponies we can ride around our bridges
2. Better hair options
3. Barrier Jackets and Magical Devices
4. Shotguns
5. Hair decs and hats
6. Lightsabers
7. Battle the forces of Chaos
8. More uniform options. And bu uniforms, I mean costumes.
9. Capes
10. More explosives
11. Picard's Dune Buggy
12. Travel back in time and hang out with Kirk
13. Allow us to Order 24 Ferenigar
14. More Undine fighting. Now those are some fun bad guys. I really want a few feature series devoted to thwarting their evil scheme ala DS9 with the Dominion.

I wonder how it would have worked.
Badly, you think teaming is a pain the TRIBBLE now? Imagine if the ship couldn't even move if some one's internet was out?
An STF when you need twenty five people to turn up? No thank you.
Co-op online starship would simply prove the old adage "none of us is as dumb as all of us" correct; imagine 10 "alpha-nerds" trying to coordinate ship operations.
I tried to imagine it and I almost had a stroke laughing.

Teaming isn't the only issue.
Imagine if your Helm has an average ping of 34, but your CTO has an average of 300.
Try lining up your torpedo tubes even once in a 5 day span
That kind of system works when everyone is in the same room, but not over the net sadly.
I know (Good Lord, she jabs more in combat than Spiderman does). Like I said, I didn't have my glasses on and it was only for a moment. I looked twice to make sure.
this game lost awesome they they started catering to the noobs and nerfing everything because the noob suck at playing pvp... the only way to get back to awesome is to leave the ships alone and make ppl get better at playing .....not make the ships suck just so noobs can get a kill
Well the game hasn't been active very long, there are quite a few noobs (such as myself) out there.
Once the player-base matures a bit -- more long-term players to balance the influx of uber-noobs -- they'll more than likely restore some of the Powergame aspects.
I for one welcome the nerfing because it gives me a chance to come up to speed without the frustration of being pwnd every time I attempt something.
So... to recap.

And a few more as I sit here nursing my hangover:
Actual ineffective NERF weapons. For those weak-livered pacifists who come in peace... and leave in pieces!
A gender-changing weapon. No lasting damage but it'd be hella distracting in PVP. "Hey I got ****!"
An actual bar at Space Dock that your character can get drunk at. You'd end up totally debuffed for X period of time and suffer "random control syndrome."
so what they are making the game suck for the ppl that have been here from the start we are the one that paid a **** load of money and put in all the time noob come in think they know somthing and they dont so if thats the way its going to be all the ppl that paid for there preorders when it was a preored should get some of there money back because of all the lies told by them
To make the game better, I'd really like to see a more in-depth story than "War! Huh. Good G-d, y'all, what is it good for? Exploration marks. DO IT AGAIN! GRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIND!" The episodic content is great, but I'd love an actual over-arching story.

This is your first MMO, I take it. Welcome to MMOs.
And like Flasherman, I also miss grammar. And sentences. And apostrophes if you are using contractions. And spellcheck.
But he is blind, so I won't hold his spelling against him.

I gave up on another MMO that will remain nameless because A) No one would help me get up to speed and the game was stacked to favor Power Gamers and even the most basic quest was impossible for a Level 2 (whatever) to beat. Paid $44 for the software and $19 for a month of getting destroyed every time I played.
Here, at STO I've exchanged Q&A with TWO Vice Adm. who contacted ME to see if I needed help. I've come up seven levels in twelve hours of gameplay, and I'm having FUN. Right there, that last word is the most important part. The game is FUN.
That said they need to get their butts in gear and make it possible to bind keystrokes to my 47,000 button joystick-gamepad.
Give it time folks let it mature some, I'm sure Cryptic is working on addressing some of the balance and story items. Something like this is an enormous undertaking, it's not like slapping together a program in Visual Basic.

you all crack me up, as far as im concerned every one playing this game is a noob in this game. its barely been out a year. the game is still being developed. might i add it was only in development for 1 year which is why it sux so bad right now.
in another year or so this game will either rock or suck some more.
Were as big minds can see the flaws smaller minds think of as a feature.
Making it optional or not needing everyone would make it unused for the most part. No, the space part of the game is fine how it is, the ground needs the work, probably pushing in the direction of TPS area.
this game is new and lacking in ideas, mainly due to the speed it was developed and launched -
here are some ideas i think may improve the game.
fleet space stations
seemless transitions
indepth fleet control systems and managment
realistic mining for resources
deep complex crafting useing the above resources
no loot
ships - this is my thoughts on players ships
right now its one player controlling an entire starship by them selves. these ships are supposed to have in excess of 500 + crew men onboard, while this is unrealistic in terms of gaming. it should be simulated as best as possible.
i think ships from lt commander upwards should be striclty multiplayer, and require a minimum of 5 players to opperate the ship.
now !!! some people may think if your not at the guns your job is worthless. but imagine for a momment.
steve is at tactical he has various tactical skills, jim is at engineering along side freedie between them they have a nice aray of support skills ready to aid the captain as and when needed. and sally and julie at the science station have some rather nifty skills to help bolster the ships crews and some rather unique scientific abilities and special weapons. while the captain is provideing a numerous array of buffs and boosts tot he ship and the crews. and all along you have ted and lissa at the helm doing all the flying.
and to top it all off the ship is flown from within the bridge, and check this out. if other people want to come along for the ride they too can help out on the lower decks by patching up holes and repairing damaged subsystems further bolstering the ships effectiveness and defence.
surely thats how this game should be played?
exploration -
to boldly go where no one has gone before!!! well thats just not possible in sto, the game is restricted by walls and loading screens and pretty much every where has been seen before. there is no exploration in sto. players dont have the luxery of flying round finding strang new things.
instead they have exploration sectors where they scan anomolies. which yield only two things. a system to explore which they have already explored a thousand times already or some particles for their rather dull crafting system.
sto isnt vast it isnt massive and their is absolutely nothing to explore. it lacks this element.
on the ground and planets -
currently sto ground on every single planet is identicle in almost every way give or take diffrent types of races or where the terrain dips and rises. other than these subtle diffrences ground sto is well the same on every single planet.
the missions are the saame too.. kill 5 groups of bad guys . investigate computers. or scan anomolies of some kind. the quests are identicle. one yo have done one you have done them all.
also ground based sto is tiny and compact, it doesnt feel like a planet at all, but more a small instanced room with walls as boundries. doesnt feel too good!!
planet side needs to feel planet side and have a population on them that can be interacted with. their needs to be markets and vendors that sell diffrent items and unique goods that cannot be located anywhere else in the galaxy.
sto is empty and bland and has no thought or imagination put into it. you can see that bu the aid the planet content.. lol self sealing stem bolts. shield generatyors ??? how much more effortless can programming be.
before you couldnt replicate these items. you had to find the correct merchant and obtain them that way before returning to the aid the planet mission to finish the quest. now its just as boreing with less traveling.
loading screens - i dont remember seeing loadingh screens in any of the startrek series or films ive ever seen so why does this game have so many of them. transitions need to be seemless.
remove sector space completly.
i know it represents being in warp, but it doesnt represent it very well. the game should be played from the bridge just like startrek bridge commander ith the option to have a 3rd person veiw.
open up more of the ship and place things like engineering an science stations and astrometric labs that can actually be interacted with. how about crafting stations on the ships!! how about personal bank space on the ship. how about crew qaurters for players on your ship.
remove single player ships the fact i can fly an entire starship single handedly is obsurd. its so far from cannon its unreal. any one that has ever played starwars galaxies will know that multiplayer ships work really well and is very very good fun. much better than this sto ship trick we got going on here.
the ships in starterk have crews of a thousand people. entire fammilies live on them, why is this not duplicated into the game, why is this not the focal point of sto. why is it all about loot and collections and isntances ???

however!!

we all know how the game needs to be, but no one can figure out how to make it be thaty way with out it being overly complex.
i think its as simple as removing sector space and making the game seemless in its transistionas an playable strictly fromt he bridge of your ships.
captain kirk didnt command the uss enterprize by himself, he sat in a chair with all his mates round him. her had his science officer he had his tactical he had his engineer and his linguistics officer. and the helm officers and so on. these starships should be multiplayer. and only asvailable to fleets. single player players should be restricted to shuttles and fighter type craft.
take these places from the npc bridge officers and let players fill the roles too. im an engineer and i would love to be sat at an engineer station on some ones starship useing my skills to bolster their defences. that just sounds like awesome team work to me.
we coudl even make real away teams with real players and actually beam down from the ships transporter pad to the planet serface.
also we could have it where we could beam to where ever want to beam too. for example to anothe rplayers ship or a space station..
not this whole get so close and have a pop up flash up in your eyes with the words dock or beam down. lol
its TRIBBLE its boreing its lacking in imagination and effort. its been rushed!!
this game can be so so so much more than it currently is. only larg minds can see it. small minds are content with how the game is now.
I cannot begin with where this would be a bad idea. I am NOT going to wait until all 5 or however many others I have on my ship are present to be able to play the game. Then there is the fights on who will drive, who will shoot phasers, who will load torpedoes, who wears the red jersey, who will get to look in the blue Viewmaster, and who will get to seduce the green women. And finally what happens when the driver and/or gunner have bad connections?
Exploration:
Not our fault you are playing through the content faster then the devs can make it.:p
Planets:
You obviously did not watch the series or else you would have seen how similar every planet was to Southern California or having the same piles of rocks everywhere.
Load Screens:
Seemsless transitions would be nice, but it ranks a lot lower then hats, ponies, shotguns, and barrier jackets. What you call load screens, I call commercials.

lol @ the veiwmaster hahahah i had one of those as a kid lol. loved mine to bits.
you are absolutley right which is why sto is exactly how it is now. and is why sto doesnt really seem to be that good. i agree it would be bad for a player to dc dueing an stf or an instance. but thats where the art comes in.. stf's only work in sto now because the game is highyl instaced based. people expect to see instances in this sort of game because thats how the game is laid out.
now imagine if the sto we know was infact mroe free realm and dare i say it a little sandbox orientated. where actually traveling around in space and discovering things rather than flying to things you can see on the map. what if th eonly map you had was the map you charted for your selves.
imagine again. you have been in high warp for about 5 minutes and sensots have picked up 4-5 nebulas of diffrent configurations and around 3 randomly generated class m planets. you and your riends drop out of warp to investigate one of these planets. which is all veiwed through your veiw screen. or if you choose a 3rd person ship veiw say follow veiw or summet.
you reach orbit of the planet and you select an away team from your fleet of players aboard your fleet starship. some tac officers and the odd science officers and leave your first officer in command of the ship with his bridge officers (other players) staying alert.
you step ontp the transporter pad and beam down to the surface where you encounter a warp ready civilisation. you have now unlocked a new planet which comes omcplete with its very own types of resources trade items and race specific content and a number of quests and a story line to follow.
your fleet players can offload here if they like and spend time down on the planet surface running missions and quests on the ground in groups or solo and make the most of their lives off the ship. players could even take shuttle craft from the ship bay and do a bit of exploring of their own maybe.
the possibilities are endless and its these possibilities that cryptic is simply avoiding because it would mean remakeing the game.
all the game is at the minute is a a series of lobbys with dirrent rooms to join and play in.
and think what pvp could be like with the above description of the game. it woudl be awesome. the ship would become your fleets base of ops. and you wouldnt have fleets you would have crews, a fleet would be a selection of crews forming together to create fleets. and a fleet could maybe have its own starbase in the neutral zone.

player crews - your just thinking of the game how it is now and not thinking of how it could be! the game can be so much more than what we are getting now. use your imagination and think about it for a momment.
the only reason you have to have a full player team in these stf's is because your boff's dont know tyhey have to activate things. as soon as they figure that out the game will be 100% soloable.
The game is a work in progress. Just like Everquest, just like WoW. Once the concept is validated and the major bugs are worked out the game will be much better.
I for one like the ground combat. There however needs to be more variety in the missions other than "beam down/talk to people" or "beam down, kill people" or "beam down throw some switches."
Combat missions are all well and good but this is Star Trek. There needs to be some hardcore puzzle-solving. Not everyone is going to be able to solve every puzzle... that's why we keep the opt-out/drop mission function. Missions could be written in episodic format. Arrive on scene... assess the situation. Talk to some people.... maybe fight a bad guy to a standoff... talk to some more people... craft a solution, apply it, resolve the situation and go home.
Some epsiodes you wouldn't be able to solve in one sitting. Remember how Captain Kirk found something in one episode.... that was promptly forgotten in another episode? Well in this game you'd still have that solution in your database, you may need to apply it to another situation or use it to craft a unique solution somewhere else.
Crafting... should build off of reasearch buffs provided by your science officer. You find part A and buy part B and you combind it with the "radaition sample" you found exploring... you can craft for example a modified deflector dish.
This way we can pander to the hardcore trekfans like myself. 33 years watching.
We'll also have the combat and carnage stuff for the casual fans and the new fans who got into Trek because of a comic book or the latest movie. Story hooks in the c & c section will allow these casual/new fans to gradually ease into an introductory storyline.
Give it time. Lots of potential here. One thing that has to stop is the OMG THIS SUCKS HERE IS WHY IN EXTREME DETAIL. That scares away new fans. No new fans, no money for development, game folds.

Actually yes I was. They are all things I would like to see in this game.
I didn't have my glasses on and I could have swore for a minute your avatar looked like Ronald McDonald.
Ronald McDonald?
ANCIENT CATASTROPHE!
Especially the ponies.
I want someone to spend time and effort making a "disintegrating pony" animation so we can vaporize said equine mounts during boarding actions.
Nothing says REALISTIC like being able to vaporize a pony!
I want a dreadnaught that cloaks. Ain't gonna happen, but it'd be Uber powerful.

What you call load screens, I call commercials.
lol @ the veiwmaster hahahah i had one of those as a kid lol. loved mine to bits.
you are absolutley right which is why sto is exactly how it is now. and is why sto doesnt really seem to be that good. i agree it would be bad for a player to dc dueing an stf or an instance. but thats where the art comes in.. stf's only work in sto now because the game is highyl instaced based. people expect to see instances in this sort of game because thats how the game is laid out.
now imagine if the sto we know was infact mroe free realm and dare i say it a little sandbox orientated. where actually traveling around in space and discovering things rather than flying to things you can see on the map. what if th eonly map you had was the map you charted for your selves.
imagine again. you have been in high warp for about 5 minutes and sensots have picked up 4-5 nebulas of diffrent configurations and around 3 randomly generated class m planets. you and your riends drop out of warp to investigate one of these planets. which is all veiwed through your veiw screen. or if you choose a 3rd person ship veiw say follow veiw or summet.
you reach orbit of the planet and you select an away team from your fleet of players aboard your fleet starship. some tac officers and the odd science officers and leave your first officer in command of the ship with his bridge officers (other players) staying alert.
you step ontp the transporter pad and beam down to the surface where you encounter a warp ready civilisation. you have now unlocked a new planet which comes omcplete with its very own types of resources trade items and race specific content and a number of quests and a story line to follow.
your fleet players can offload here if they like and spend time down on the planet surface running missions and quests on the ground in groups or solo and make the most of their lives off the ship. players could even take shuttle craft from the ship bay and do a bit of exploring of their own maybe.
the possibilities are endless and its these possibilities that cryptic is simply avoiding because it would mean remakeing the game.
all the game is at the minute is a a series of lobbys with dirrent rooms to join and play in.
and think what pvp could be like with the above description of the game. it woudl be awesome. the ship would become your fleets base of ops. and you wouldnt have fleets you would have crews, a fleet would be a selection of crews forming together to create fleets. and a fleet could maybe have its own starbase in the neutral zone.
player crews - your just thinking of the game how it is now and not thinking of how it could be! the game can be so much more than what we are getting now. use your imagination and think about it for a momment.
and that my trekky friends is not an mmo at all.
