Does the spark buff icon disappear, or does the entire effect go (attack increase on character screen and damage on mobs). Sometimes buff icons can vanish early for some reason while you still have the effect.

I'd imagine it mainly depends on PvE or PvP. If you wanted to PvP, axes would be preferable since the high spike damage would give you better odds of breaking through an opponents charm that a hammer might not manage.

For PvE I'd personally recommend trying out a multi-weapon path first and then switching to pure axe later if you really find fists don't work for you.
