That's exactly why you need so many pets to get one baby pet. Male mobs are too rare. Usually at fights you dont have time to check it and if it is rare pet then nobody bothers to check till it gets caught. I have heard somewhere that higher level item has worse luck at refining. Also listen to advices what Duke gives you about refining. Some are actually useful... I would advice to start pulling Increased Magic Defence, Increased Physical Defence, Increased Life or normal mobs. Leave mobs with increased speed or attack (including SA) as last.
