If you are getting an unusual memory build up followed by a crash (due to being unable to allocate anymore memory), that is a memory leak. If not, then it is not a memory leak. There was a patch for a major memory leak in February. I've not had any issues since. If you're getting the classic signs of a leak, you could post a link to the dump file here if you wish. I can tell you from that whether or not it is caused by a leak (also make sure to report the crash). More than likely you are having a different problem. What the problem may be, I don't know (you didn't give much information). The game seems to have a lot of file management issues that are exacerbated by programs like file watchers on anti-virus programs and by the oddly assigned default privileges in the Program Files folders on Windows Vista and newer.
In order to figure out what problems you're having, you need to be very detailed with your explanation of the problem. If you have pictures, that can sometimes help as well. Also having a Speccy log will help another person here see your possible problems. (I'm not familiar with Speccy to be honest)

it is a memory leak. i can watch ram usage climb on the keyboard lcd. in task manager i can see elementclient ram usage continue to climb. when it hits 40% it will crash and give the bug report. it usually takes a bit over 5 hours. here is the dxdiag.

i'll let it crash and send the dump file0 -
i seem to be having a problem with the dump file. can you tell me what i need to do so you can take a look at it. ty0

Do you have the "Run as administrator" option ticked in the program compatibility tab for the shortcut? (If you launch from Arc, set it in the Arc properties)
With Win7 64-bit, that's pretty much an "absolute must" in order to have the client behave well.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -
yes i am running as admin. game runs well, the only problem is with elementclient ram usage climbing till it crashes. right now i just log out when it gets high then relog.0

The dump file won't neccessarily have the build number 2378, but it will have the .dmp extension. Also, make sure to send in the report on the report window after backing up the dump file. Are you running as Admin or the true Administrator account? Well, either run it with what Sylen said, because that will run it in true administrator mode.SylenThunder - Sanctuary wrote: »Do you have the "Run as administrator" option ticked in the program compatibility tab for the shortcut? (If you launch from Arc, set it in the Arc properties)
Or use the true Administrator account.
I don't like to play around with worthless security bits on Windows, so I use the true Administrator 24/7.Kernal32.dll error? Get Arc XP for PWI because PWE Derpped -->http://www.nrgs.org/dev/arcxp/ArcXP.zip<-- (Don't select the arrows!)

ok i've run as admin off the compatability tab and as full administrator and still have the same problem with memory. really not sure there is anything i can do about it other than exit game every 5 hours and relog. ty tho0

Where is PWI installed? If installed in "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)", make sure you have ownership over the folder. If you can't figure out how to do that or the system is fighting you, try installing PWI somewhere other than those folders. The game has a lot of issues running on Vista, 7, 8, 10, from that folder if you don't have ownership over the folder.
Try that and see if it fixes it. If not that, I may be at a loss here.Kernal32.dll error? Get Arc XP for PWI because PWE Derpped -->http://www.nrgs.org/dev/arcxp/ArcXP.zip<-- (Don't select the arrows!)

both files are in program files x86. permissions are set correctly. i've tried as admin and full administrator but nothing seems to help. moving the folders doesn't seem to help so for now i guess i'll just have to log out and reset memory that way. thank you for your ideas but this seems to be a problem that's peculiar to my system so i guess i'll live with it and do more research0

Sounds like there are other issues that may be causing that. The game itself does not need "run as admin" to run. But the patcher will need permissions to install/modify files if you are not using the disabled admin account built into win7. I have never seen the game itself need it since I have been playing this game.
I see you are running 64bit windows, normally 32bit programs do not have problems running, but they are emulated through wow64. This can cause undefined behavior but that does not mean that is the problem.
I suggest running the game with nothing else running to see if it still has the same problems. I also suggest getting a program to test your memory, you could have a hardware issue.Marine - Marshall - Raging Tides - Retired

tested memory in both DOS and windows environments and no errors. never needed to run as admin for almost 6 years but tried it as suggested. no help. this started with eclipse and has me stumped. but it takes over 5 hours to crash so i watch and relog when needed. for now i'll have to live with it. thanks for ideas tho0

I've been fixing computers for many years, not once has a memory leak ever been because of a fault in the memory modules (because it doesn't really make any sense). When they are faulty it is common for the screen to go black, have failed BSoD filled boots (because of ASLR), have programs fail to start, and have files not get written to non-volatile storage. In less common cases, it will also manifest in a way that suggests a graphics card and networking card is not functioning, as well as any other peripherals.
Memory leaks are the cause of programs that fail to deallocate memory space after allocating it. A common reason for this is because a program will allocate memory, attempt to do something, then forgot to deallocate it (assuming it's not needed). When it builds up large enough it will cause the allocated memory to hit its limit. The limit for 32-bit (around 4GB~), which is minutely different between Win32 and WoW64, fails and can't allocate more, which causes crashes.
Now, if Bogatir really isn't running any sort of file watcher, backup system, or anything that watches files, it may be something different from the PW usual. I'd say it's more possible that it could be memory fragmentation happening, which is less common, but can happen and will result in the same outcome, crashing.
Memory fragmentation is when blocks of memory are allocated and deallocated, but because another allocation of the same block size doesn't necessarily occur next, that causes the deallocated block or parts of it to stay free wasting the programs total memory limitation, virtually, not physically. This will also lead to the program being unable to allocate anymore memory and thus a crash.
A typical fix for this is to use fairly aggressive object pooling, but knowing how PW is made, I have a gut feeling they didn't use pooling (or if they even understand the reason why it's good to use it). Of course, this all depends on whether or not memory fragmentation is even to blame. A build up of physical memory is typically a memory leak (usually lag (not latency) is quite visible due to large heap size). When physical memory and virtual memory of the application differ by some extent, this is memory fragmentation (usually no lag is visible).
I've really got nothing more to say. The cause is either a memory leak, memory fragmentation, or both. Both of which can be fixed by the PW devs. The only reason for either is due to poor memory management and programming. You don't see a lot of games that handle memory this inefficiently and recklessly. So, yeah...one can only hope they do something eventually.Kernal32.dll error? While I do know what you are talking about, I doubt it is related to a memory leak. If this was the case the type of system(that meets min req) you play on would be irrelevant. Everyone would have the same issue and crashing all the time. This is not the case. It may not be a problem on the physical memory itself, but I still think it is a problem with hardware, software or a combination of the two.
Memory fragmentation on a windows machine is a common problem and is a system issue that has plagued the windows platform for decades. While sloppy programming does not help, even a perfectly written program will still have fragmentation in the virtual space. There are 3rd party programs that will "defragment so to speak" or free up unused memory but that will not fix the underlying problem.
He should uninstall every application that is running on his maching so that only pw and the windows system is running. Then start from a cold start. If he has no problems like before, pw,hardware or windows itself is not the problem. It would be a conflict with another program or programs.
While 32 bit systems can address up to 4gig of addressable memory, on windows, only half of that can be allocated in the virtual space. The other half is allocated by windows. You can break this limitation, but will result in undefined behavior.Marine - Marshall - Raging Tides - Retired

A number of people don't leave PW on long enough to realize that there's a problem. During the known memory leak that just happened a few months ago, I had to have PW running for 3~4 days before it would crash, while it took mere hours for others. Just because people don't get the end-result quick enough, doesn't mean it isn't happening. I'm starting to believe there might be a separate leak happening, because I noticed that they updated elementclient in March, after the Feb fix. A handful of people started complaining after that update. These leaks, strictly speaking, don't necessarily have to affect everyone, unless you know how and where elementclient implemented all of its memory allocating and deallocating.
After next maintenance I'm going to, attempt (assuming no power outages), to keep PW up until the maintenance after that. I'll be monitoring it and see if there are any signs that point to another leak. It very well could be another leak, but maybe a far less drastic one than usual, caused by more unusual circumstances. If I don't find any problems, I will then say that maybe it is hardware. However, hardware is the last thing I'm going to currently blame, because the current PW devs have had this exact same issue a number of times before.Salari - Raging Tide wrote: »Memory fragmentation on a windows machine is a common problem and is a system issue that has plagued the windows platform for decades. If a program is perfectly written, it will not have fragmentation issues. You can cache large amounts of information onto non-volatile storage, dispose of the data from RAM, then reallocate. Uninstalling every program is a ridiculous thing to do. Preventing them and any of their services from starting up makes more sense. People, including me have ran the client for weeks on end between maint and never had a problem. Then there are others that have problems all the time. The inconsistencies alone point to other issues not related to the client itself. Even changing a simple setting in the bios that one may think is unrelated to a piece of software can break it.
Just stopping services will not be enough, that is just the lazy way of trying to find software conflicts. If the program installed a library that another program uses but is newer or older can also break software. Just because it is newer does not mean the same feature is still there or even called the same. Directx 9c is a perfect example of this. That specific version of Direcx broke a lot of games, mostly from not being included in the dx download or it was incomplete. The fix required for a long time was to download that specific installer from MS. Even the official download of higher versions of Directx did not include 9c at one point in time.If compilers and stock malloc's were perfectly written, it will not have fragmentation issues. You can cache large amounts of information onto non-volatile storage, dispose of the data from RAM, then reallocate. It's a proven system that high-end software does do. Especially server software.
I fixed that for you, a perfectly written program can still have problems, especially when you get into the domain of cross-platform compatibility. Even though most fragmentation is from memory leaks, I still have not seen anything that points to the client being the problemMarine - Marshall - Raging Tides - Retired

Uh huh, your logic would work in most cases, except for one thing. I had only 2 characters who could cause the memory leak from last time. All other characters I had, who amount to a double digit number, could not cause the leak to occur no matter how long they were logged in. So, this brings me back to my point above, which is that it literally may not affect everyone. In my case, it affected only 2 characters who consistently, and without fail, had the leak (even on different computers, only those 2). This is nothing new. The same **** has happened a number of times. They are very sloppy with their memory management code. I'm going to keep assuming its the same as always. Don't underestimate the current development teams ability to fail at memory management.Salari - Raging Tide wrote: »Just stopping services will not be enough, that is just the lazy way of trying to find software conflicts. Unless you have 300+ pieces of software installed (I do on this system). If Bogatir had a ton of other software installed, like me, I would call it unrealistic to expect the uninstallation of a ton of software to solve the problem for this game, which probably won't even solve any problems. Plus, Windows SxS should mitigate dll confliction issues, at least on Windows 7, I've not seen many issues with conflicting lib versions. I'd say Win XP and prior had many more issues with that kind of thing.Salari - Raging Tide wrote: »I fixed that for you, a perfectly written program can still have problems, especially when you get into the domain of cross-platform compatibility.
There is no way to allocate memory perfectly, that's insanity. Stability though, can be very attainable through well written software, even with cross-platform compatibility. It is done the way I mentioned. This is nothing new. Also, this is pointless to keep talking about, because it's a moot point. Personally I fail to see why fragmentation of RAM is even an issue. It's called RAM for a reason - Random Access Memory. Meaning any data anywhere in there is accessible at the same speed. Fragmentation is an issue with storage with a seek time, like CD Roms, platter hard drives and (especially) floppy drives. It should have no impact whatsoever on SSDs, USB memory sticks (basically small SSDs) and RAM can be fragmented without issue. The only problem that could occur is when an application requests a continuous free block of memory (calloc call instead of malloc) and all free blocks are too small to accomodate the request.I'm so P.R.O... It's probably not, although it is probably occurring because of the leak. I was saying that even fragmentation of RAM made more sense than a hardware fault. That's what I was doing. Although I may have over done the message I was trying to get across.Evryn - Morai wrote: »The only problem that could occur is when an application requests a continuous free block of memory (calloc call instead of malloc) and all free blocks are too small to accommodate the request.
Which is what I was talking about before. Not that I believe it is the cause.
I don't think fragmentation is the issue here, though. I don't believe hardware is the issue either. I don't believe it's drives, other software libs, or any other **** like that. I do think this is yet another PW very specific based on obscure circumstances type leak, where only certain characters have the leak and not others. That's why I want to have a number of characters up after maintenance next week and see if any of them are affected. I'll also be looking for similarities between any, if there are any, who have the problem.
Note: Oh my, I may have just spotted the leak on a very specific character. 16 bytes are being allocated every half second or so. This is very interesting. I'm recording this. Also, the character is a BM. Very interesting considering the OP is a BM as well. I suspect we do in fact have a leak specific to BMs. Wonderful.Kernal32.dll error?
