Why play trash (LoL) though?

Yknow I've yet to play that but recently wondered why it was so popular when I saw DoTa 2 gets like 1 million players per day according to Steam. I used to play Age of Empires III online (sorta like Starcraft) and while I had a lot of fun, one thing always got to me: it hits a point where how fast you hit hotkeys or click the mouse is drastically more vital than any sense of strategy. That, to me, is exceedingly boring. I played that game to strategize and not to practice kiting with my friggin archers and to tab select over to my cavalry etc back and forth as me and my opponent end up in an obsessive kite fight. So after I hit a certain level of skill, I just quit, cause yeah didn't interest me to be like "OK TIME TO PRACTICE REAL HARD SO I CAN HIT THE TAB BUTTON .0075 SECONDS FASTER."


I could be wrong but I always got the impression DoTa and LoL were dumbed down (not hatin' since there's plenty of room to streamline Starcraft and AoE) versions of Starcraft since you only had to manage one unit rather than a friggin army. And while I get the appeal of such games, what I do NOT get, is how on earth those games manage to be THAT popular and played THAT much daily when you will inevitably hit a skill level where the only way you can improve is to....click and type faster.

Started wondering if a good portion of those game's populations are in this happy little delusional state where they somehow believe improvement is plausible when it's simply not because it now depends on reaction time or finger dexterity (there's a reason top level players have Keystrokes-per-minute on their stat cards in stuff like Starcraft) when in actuality they're just doing the same thing over and over and over and over without any real progress.

Eventually found some LoL players and asked them how accurate my assessment was and got the answer "nah that's pretty spot on, I have a love-hate relationship with the game for that reason" while being told most of the top tier teams recruit 16-18 year olds specifically for their faster reaction times.



Why people obsessively play games where personal improvement is next to impossible or painstakingly boring, I've no idea, but to each their own. Can fully understand loving the games up until you hit that "cap," (played the hell out of Age of Empires III, oh and f*** you Japan they made you OP as hell just to appease the weeaboos) but the sheer amount of players who play both games suggests there's a rather large and miserable population who like to repeatedly run fullspeed at brick walls in hopes something different will happen.
