A general Venomancer pet guide for all your Venomancer pet needs.
This guide is a collection of information, links and resources about pets. The idea was inspired from from this. A lot of useful pet threads are becoming outdated. In addition to that, there are many threads that could be put together into a single guide. The point of this guide is to collect everything and put them together so that Venomancers can use this for pet-related needs without having to search for multiple sources.

2. Types of pets
Pets come in different forms and shapes. They also have different abilities. It's important to use the right pet for the right job.
Physical Tanking
Air pets are not, in general, strong physical tanks. None of the categories have good growth for this type of situation. If you plan on doing a lot of air-based tanking, look for a Windwalking Piggy, a Baby Blazing Phoenix, a Harpy or a Monkey King. The last three are legendary pets and the Monkey is a PvP oriented pet, more so than the Phoenix, so if your budget is low you may want to simply stick to the Piggy.
On the ground, Magmites and Glacial Walkers have very good Physical Defense and Attack growth, allowing them to keep the mob's attention while mitigating much of the damage; magic defense is, however, quite weak. For pure physical tanking, these really are the best choice without going for a legendary pet. The Shaodu Cub and the Armored Bear are quite good at tanking as well but the Walker is the slightly better option. The Baby Hercules is the ultimate tank but it's a legendary pet.
In the water, Turtles make the best pets for a physical tanking job until the Plumpfish at level 80 or the evolved Baby Hercules (Celestial Giant) at level 100. Other legendary pets are decent too.
Magic Tanking
For the air, the Gray Waspkin group does the best but the Windwalking Piggy is also decent. The Baby Blazing Phoenix, the Monkey King and the Harpy are also good, with the Harpy having the edge.
Carapests, Antelopes and the Frogling have the best Magical Defense on the ground, though Carapests have slightly more HP and Antelopes deal significantly more damage. It's still worth mentioning the Baby Hercules since its buffs will enable it to tank magic quite well too. The Monkey is also decent. The Harpy is overall the better choice though.
Frost Undines have the best Magic Defense in the water. The Monkey is a decent choice while the Harpy is the overall better choice.
Note that the majority of monsters and bosses that deal magic damage at range will resort to using physical attacks at melee range therefore magic tanking isn't really so important or necessary. Players usually pick a good physical tank pet (Glacial Walker or Baby Hercules) and stick with that.
Ranged Tanking
There are pets that are able to deal ranged damage which makes them ideal for pulling/luring and range tanking, among other things. Monsters and bosses will sometimes deal less damage at range and in some situations ranged tanking has the simple advantage of being...ranged.
Popular pets for ranged tanking are the Eldergoth Marksman and/or the Eldergoth Sharpshooter. Any kind of cancti pets are also ranged but they are usually used as pulling/luring pets than actual tanks due to their lower stats. Higher level cacti pets Celestial Sting and Ethereal Inamorato are also able to evolve.
Keep in mind that the above mentioned pets only use range when they are auto-attacking so you have to make sure their skills are turned off. If you want to them to use a skill attack, they'll run into melee range. These pets are also available for the ground combat only.
The legendary pet Harpy is another ranged pet which, unlike the ones mentioned previously, she can deal ranged damage with both auto-attacks and skill attacks. The Harpy has no melee skills. She's also able to swim and fly so she has the advantage of being an all-environment pet as well.
Damage Dealing
The Blue Waspkin group provide the best attack increases of the common air pets. They all have Bash and Toxic Mist, which provide frequent DPS additions to their auto attack. The Petite Sawfly is the slightly superior one in terms of stats and it can also evolve at level 100. The Cloud Skatefish is a good option too but it cannot evolve. The Monkey King, Baby Blazing Phoenix and Harpy are all great choicea as DD pets with the Harpy having the edge in damage and DPS.
Magmites, Glacial Walkers and the Scorpions have all got good offensive growth and you may already be using one or two of these as tanks. All pets mentioned above are able to evolve. One of the most popular choices is the Dark Wanderer pet which can also evolve and it has decent physical defence too. At level 101 the Derjan's Hatchling is available. It is able to evolve and it's considered the best non-legendary DD pet. The evolved Baby Blazing Phoenix, the Monkey and the Harpy are amazing DD pets with the Harpy, once again, being the best choice.
There's no winner in the water as far as free pets are concerned; stick with a Turtle or Water Undine. Turtles have better survivability, but move more slowly and tend to block your view. Evolved Baby Hercules, evolved Baby Blazing Phoenix, the Monkey King or the Harpy are great choices too.
Luring/Pulling
In the air, everything's about the same as far as movement goes, so don't take up another pet bag slot with a puller.
On land, ranged Eldergoth and cacti pets make decent pullers. Minkiis have reasonably good movement speed and make a decent alternative to a ranged puller; investing in a Kowlin would be a good idea once you hit level 60 if this is your preferred type of puller. The Ninetail Firefox, the Tabby Plumpdrop, the Cuddly Pup and the variety of Petalii pets are also decent choices.
Merfolk are the fastest swimmers and make decent pullers, but again, not usually worth the pet bag slot just for pulling.
The Harpy is the superior luring pet for being both ranged and an all-environment pet from level 1. Of course, investing into a Harpy just for pulling isn't a smart choice. Any ranged or fast pet will do the job.
Debuffer/Support
Any of the tanking pets will be a good choice here due to their ability to survive, but DD oriented pets are also great choices.
Situations requiring debuffs will also generally be in instances or on the ground, so don't fill your pet bag slots with air/water utility pets, especially not if you're able to get any of the legendary pets. The Baby Hercules and Baby Blazing Phoenix become all-terrain pets after evolution. The Harpy and the Monkey King don't count since they have exclusive skills which once erased, they can no longer be obtained/taught again.
Debuff/Support pet skills include Howl, Pierce, Shriek, Threaten and Pounce. All of them, except for Pounce, can be obtained at the Zoologist NPCs.
PvP
Nowadays most free pets cannot survive well enough to be worth using in PvP. Perhaps the evolved Windwalking Piggy, the evolved Petite Sawfly, the evolved Dark Wanderer, the evolved Cuddly Pup and the evolved Darjan's Hatchling may be worth checking out but don't expect too much from them.
The choice will usually boil down to the Baby Blazing Phoenix or the Monkey King. The Phoenix is a lot cheaper than the Monkey so most people will opt for that but those who are more serious about PvP or have the ability to spend the coin, will go for the Monkey.
While both pets are decent, the Monkey has superior Inherit stats after evolution and it also comes with a more useful skill set for PvP compared to the Phoenix.
Note that both of them might need buff skills like Protect and/or Strong to increase their survivablity and there's certain Mood skills that come into play. You can find more about it in the pet evolution guide.
3. Rare pets
Rare pets aren't necessarily better than regular pets, but they are often cuter and have a more attractive design. Naturally, that's a matter of opinion though.
Here's a list of useful Rare Pet related guides/threads (they include tips on how to tame them):

Frogling
It can be used as a magic tank because of its high magic defense. It's level 9 and spawns every 12 hours at 245 571, 239 549 and 196 513.
Snow Hare
It can be used as a magic tank because of its high magic defense. It's level 20 and spawns every hour at 469 921, and every 12 hours at 95 810.
Tabby Plumdrop
The Tabby Plumdrop is a debuffing type of pet. It comes with a physical and magical debuff. This cute little cat has a good balance bewteen the damage dealt, HP, defense, and speed. It's level 20 and spawns every 12 hours at 362 690 and 397 619.
Shaodu Cub
With a lot of HP and defense, this polar bear cub is made for tanking. It's normal that the damage it deals is lower. It also comes with Pounce, a legendary pet skill that stuns the target and increases the pet's attack rate. It's level 20 and spawns every 12 hours at 200 452 and 288 458.
Windwalking Piggy
With high HP and defence, this pet is also made for tanking but specifically for air combat. It can work on ground too but not in instances. It's level 30 and spawns every 12 hours at 403 643 (approximately 38 altitude).
Cuddly Pup
The pup can be used as a puller because of it's speed, as a DDer because of it's high attack and Bash skill, as a debuffer, since he has Slow (reduces speed) and Threaten (reduces physical attack) as skills. It's level 40 and spawns every 12 hours at 299 764.
Kowlin
Lower HP and defense, but very high speed and damage. This panther is made for pulling, DDing and debuffing because it comes with a nice set of skills as default. Even though it has low HP and defense, which makes it die quickly, it's speed saves it when pulling. It's level 60 and spawns every 12 hours at 462 427.
Armored Bear
With a lot of HP and defense, this polar bear cub is made for tanking. It's normal that the damage it deals is lower. It also comes with Pounce, a legendary pet skill that stuns the target and increases the pet's attack rate. It's level 80 and spawns every 12 hours at 628 624.
Derjan's Ancient Hatchling
This rare pet comes with some common level 1 skills. However, its attack as well as attack rate (1 APS, highest land dps pet) are its strong points, making it a great DD (possibly the best one, excluding legendary pets). It's level 101.
This pet is bound upon taming. Unlike other rare pets, its spawn time is random between 24-48 hours so it's harder to tame. It spawns at one of the following coordinates inside Morai: 362 544, 346 528, 354 538.
4. Legendary Pets
Adapted from the original Legendary Pet Guide.
Legendary pets are pets that can be bought from the Boutique or other players who sell them. They are costly and because of that they also have certain advantages over free pets.
They are commonly called cash shop pets, CS pets or just legendary pets. They are usually the final goal of Venomancers as far as pets are concerned although some do choose to stick to free pets. Legendary pets are not necessary to play the game, especially in PvE, but they do grant the player advantages and abilities that they wouldn't have otherwise.
How to obtain a legendary pet
In order to obtain a legendary pet you have to buy certain items from the Boutique and exchange them for the pet ticket at Ms. Zoologist in Archosaur (587 620). The items and tickets are tradeable but once the ticket has been opened the pet is bound to the account (it can be account stashed).
The requirements are the following:
Baby Hercules - 9999 Source of Force
Baby Blazing Phoenix - 9999 Phoenix Feather
Monkey King - 10000 Soul Root
Harpy - 10000 Harpy Plume
All items are available in the Boutique or from players in-game. The Source of Force & Phoenix Feather are also available in the Battle Pet Packs (in the Boutique). The Baby Hercules and Baby Blazing Phoenix tickets can also be obtained through Perfect Chests chance packs (in the Boutique).
All legendary pets start at level 1. Harpy and Monkey are all-environment pets since level 1, the Hercules and the Phoenix have to evolved at level 100 first before they can be taken anywhere.

~Legendary Pets (PWI Wiki)
A quick summary of the legendary pets:
Celestial Giant (Baby Hercules)
The Hercules is the ultimate tanking pet, no competition. It enables you to tank several at-level bosses and gives you the ability to solo your own instances with ease. Of course some instances cannot be solo'd. Although soloing will be easier, remember it it's still going to be time consuming, but at least you won't have to rely on other people as much if you're more of a loner.
The evolved Hercules remains as the best tanking pet after level 100 that now comes with a pretty strong aggro stealing/keeping skill and a nice boost in its defence and HP. It can have additional aggro and self healing skills with the right moods. It gets a pretty nice boost in attack too.
It's worth buying one and it's not too expensive (on sale) but prices vary among the servers. It's worth acquiring one and you'll gain the ability to tank so much more in-game as well as allow you to DD more while pet tanking.
Heliacal Phoenix (Baby Blazing Phoenix)
As Mayfly put it, the Phoenix only fills the "jack of all trades, master of none" pet role now. It's a good DD pet, but Harpy is better; it has a role in PVP, but the Monkey is better; it's a decent tank pet, but the Hercules is better unless you load up the Nix with Herc buffs, and even then an evolved Hercules will hold aggro better than an evolved Phoenix.
It's nice in PvE but it can be easily replaced by other evolved pets at level 100 that can perform similarly if you want cheaper options. Unless you plan to PvP with the Phoenix I recommend against buying one for PvE purposes, even though it can be really nice and useful at lower levels.
Teaching it Protect/Strong can turn the Phoenix into a solid DD/tanky all-environment pet (after evolution) for all purposes. It's cheaper than the Harpy/Monkey but it's overshadowed by them so it's all up to you and your budget.
I'd recommend it for someone who can only afford one legendary pet and want to use one for multiple tasks such as tanking, DDing and PvP. It would require teaching it the buffs mentioned above to make the best out of it though.
Empyrean Harpy (Harpy)
Strictly PvE pet equipped with ranged attacks (physical, magical, auto-attack), spam-able attacks, AOE attacks, ranged AOE monster-only stun. She's good for pulling, has great DD/DPS in PvE, she's for AOEs & grinding and is suitable for ranged tanking.
It's, more or less the best PvE DD & DPS pet with other useful gimmicks (visit links above).
Avatar of War (Monkey King)
A PvP oriented pet with a lot of stunlocking possibilities. It has single target freeze, single target stun and ranged AOE stun.
It's pretty much the best PvP pet. It's an excellent pet for PK, NW and other miscellaneous PvP, though in TW it might die often because of TWs nature being full of AOEs and whatnot.
It has overall better survival and damage potential than the Phoenix due to its Inherit stats. Most Venomancer will teach their Monkey Strong and/or Protect for even better survival.
Raising a legendary pet
Legendary pets don't eat like other pets; they are picky. The Hercules eats meat only. The Phoenix eats Hay only. The Harpy eats meat, fruit and pure water. The Monkey eats meat and pure water.
However, all of them love Perfect Cookies! You can trade 9 perfect-tokens at the PW Boutique Agent for 25 perfect cookies that give your pet 200 loyalty per snack.
Once you get your legendary pet up to full loyalty you'll find that feeding them foods like hay, meat or cookies can be expensive. The way to combat this is to get your hands on a tome, something you'll want to acquire later on either way because they are useful. There's also the Arcane Blessing.
Arcane Blessing: Found in the Boutique, keeps your pet feed for a week. Keep in mind that is a physical week and not a game week. I suggest tomes more than purchasing an Arcane Blessing. It's not worth the gold.
Mystical Tome: A Mystical Tome is an item that you can wear to give you additional statistics to your character giving various stats like mana regeneration, vitality, magic, extra exp, and damage reduction etc. For Venomancer, it keeps the pet fed. Any tome works. You can buy one from other players or make one.
Keep in mind that if pets die, they will still loose loyalty points. The tome itself won't restore the lost loyalty; you have to feed your pets.

5. What's the best pet?
Adapted from the original Pets, numbers, and sorting. Answer to the eternal "What's the best pet?" question !
~Level 105 pet stats.
~Level 105 pet stats - offline viewing.
A lot of useful and interesting information can be found in that thread so I'd advice reading it but keep in mind that it's missing a lot of newer pets.
Here is a quick summary of that thread. I'll add my personal comments under every category. I'm not good with the maths stuff so my comments will be from experience.
The list includes only land, non-ranged pets, the lower tame level of the family. The pet stats taken into account were for level 90. My comments will include range/air/level 100 and evolved pets.
Top 10 overall def:
Baby Hercules
Shaodu Cub
Armored Bear
Astral Beetle (Hept-, Pent-, Quadr-)
Crystalline Magmite
Qingfu (Emerald, Jaden, Verdant)
Tuskmoor (Plainswalker, Riverside, Doft)
Tauroc (Angler, Logger, Stevedore)
Rhinodrake (Billabong, Boondock, Plainswalker)
Frogling
The Baby Blazing Phoenix, the Monkey King and the Harpy all have decent defences as well due to being legendary pets. They would probably score somewhere close to the Shaodu Cub/Armored Bear. The Glacial Walker has slightly better stats than the Crystalline Magmite so it would be pretty high up there too. The Dark Wanderer also has decent defences to be somewhere on the list of top 10. Perhaps the Derjan's Hatchling too.
At level 100, the pets that can evolve would most likely beat the non-evolved pets due to getting defence from the Venomancer's gear as well. The non-evolution pets are the Astral Beetle, the Qinfu, the Tuskmoor, the Tauroc and the Rhinodrake.
Then you also have to consider that Baby Hercules, Glacial Walker and Crystalline Magmite do come with tanking-related skills and defence/hp oriented Inherit after evolution.
Top 10 Pdef:
Baby Hercules
Crystalline Magmite
Armored Bear
Shaodu Cub
Qingfu (Emerald, Jaden, Verdant)
Astral Beetle (Hept-, Pent-, Quadr-)
Tauroc (Angler, Logger, Stevedore)
Tuskmoor (Plainswalker, Riverside, Doft)
Minkii (Mongoose, Redtail, Sable)
Overclocked Mechrab
As mentioned previously, the Glacial Walker has slightly better stats than the Crystalline Magmite so it would be on the second place with it. The Baby Blazing Phoenix and the Monkey are also decent enough to be above the Armored Bear/Shaodu Cub. The Dark Wanderer is above the Armored Bear/Shaodu Cub too.
The Harpy and the Derjan's Hatchling are around the level of Tsukmoors in terms of physical defence. Keep in mind that the Baby Blazing Phoenix cannot be taken into instances until after it evolves.
Top 10 Mdef:
Baby Hercules
Armored Bear
Shaodu Cub
Frogling
Astral Beetle (Hept-, Pent-, Quadr-)
Rhinodrake (Billabong, Boondock, Plainswalker)
Tuskmoor (Plainswalker, Riverside, Doft)
Carapest Terror
Qingfu (Emerald, Jaden, Verdant)
Guardian Wolf
The Harpy, the Baby Blazing Phoenix and the Monkey King all have superior magic defence stats than all the pets on the list. However, as noted previously the Phoenix is excluded from instances until it evolves. The Harpy, being purely a ranged pet, would take advantage of magic attacks (forcing monsters/bosses to deal ranged damage) and therefore its magic defence the most.
Also keep in mind that the Baby Hercules comes with a magic defence buff which probably places it on equal grounds with the pets mentioned above when buffed (unless you teach Harpy/Phoenix/Monkey Protect).
I shall also mention the Seamonster Guardian who has pretty great stats too.
Top 10 Dps, including Bash lvl 5:
Baby Hercules
Scorpion (Pollen, Pup, Varicose)
Crystalline Magmite
Antelope Pup
Nine Tail Foxie
Bloodthirsty Adalwolf
Kowlin
Cuddly Pup
Qingfu (Emerald, Jaden, Verdant)
Frogling
The Harpy would probably be the top pet here. The Harpy's main advantage is the fact that two of the three attack skills have such a short cooldown that they can be literally spammed. The Harpy doesn't need to auto-attack. The channeling/cast time of the skills is quite fast too. In addition to this, Harpy deals extra damage on monsters so it's damage + extra damage = total damage.
Perhaps her damage and overall DPS isn't too far ahead of other pets before evolving. After evolution, however, she has access to two skill damage buffs that she can take full advantage of because she always uses skills. On top of that, her attack level Inherit is 100%.
The Monkey King is really powerful too. Rule the World is a really strong attack skill and its base attack is high, too. It gets 100% attack and attack level upon evolution. I would dare to say the Harpy would still deal the most overall damage/DPS, but the Monkey could be a close second.
The Baby Blazing Phoenix is a great DD pet too, but it's limited to air and non-instanced ground combat. After evolution it gets 75%/90% attack/attack level Inherit falling behind the Monkey, but still remain powerful enough.
Other notable pets are the Derjan's Hatchling and the Dark Wanderer, with the Hatchling having the edge and possibly being the best land DD/DPS pet, excluding the Harpy/Monkey. The Seamonster Guardian, Petite Sawfly and Cloud Skatefish are all also great DD pets with the Sawfly and Skatefish being popular alternatives as air DD pets.
Some of these pets cannot evolve however, so they kinda lose out after level 100.
Top 11 ('cause there are ex aequo) Moving speed:
Kowlin
Nine Tail Foxie
Cuddly Pup
Petalii Hexkiss
Clever Cactopod
Steelhide Grimalkin
Huggy Hare
Armored Bear
Tabby Plumdrop
Mastiff of the Great Divide
Guardian Wolf
The Baby Blazing Phoenix is the fastest pet available but as mentioned multiple times, its usage is limited before evolution (no instances). The Harpy and the Monkey King fall just a little behind the Kowlin but slightly above the Nine Tail Foxie.
6. Using Pets (PvE and PvP)
PvE
In PvE you'll find yourself using different pets for different situations. First and foremost you'll have to get accustomed to using the pet commands (read links in 1. Pet Basics) to learn how to fully control your pet.
You'll most likely want to keep your pet on manual so that it won't attack unwanted targets. It will also avoid accidents. When a pet is on "auto" it will automatically attack monsters when they AOE even if you didn't attack with your Venomancer. By having the pet on manual you can avoid this.
During the lower levels you'll probably rely on tank pets more because you'll probably solo a lot, unless you start out with friends or make friends and play together early on. You should also learn how to pull/lure monsters (read links in 1. Pet Basics).
Although nowadays players do get a lot of useful things like free charms or free gear from Dreamchaser packs making things a lot easier, it's still a good idea to keep a leveled tanky pet around.
If you want to play safe and let the pet take all the damage for you, you'll have to hold back with your damage to allow the pet to keep aggro. The trick is usually to allow the pet to hit a few times before you start attacking too.
During higher levels you'll probably start using DD/debuff pets more, especially once you start running things with squads regularly. However you might still end up being the tank of the squad and have to use your loyal tank pet. Venomancers can body tank a variety of things, especially with a healer, but since this section is about pets only, I'll skip this.
Roar would be a good skill to have on your tank pet so that it can quickly reset and grab aggro onto itself. You might also need to tell your squad to hold back with their attacks. If it's a Baby Hercules pet, the Bramble will help with the aggro-keeping but it won't have any way to quickly grab aggro back if it loses it. One could replace Pounce with Roar but I wouldn't suggest than since at level 100 it gets stronger aggro skills and then you'll probably miss not having Pounce.
Although someone might choose to remove Pounce and replace it with Bless for even more HP or Claw to increase the pet's overall attack. In the past, Venomancers would usually replace Pounce with Bash to help out with generating/keeping aggro.
At endgame instances, most pets will really be just DD/debuff/support. It is rare that pets will tank. The evolved Baby Hercules will be a great tank pet and can be useful in many situations but you'll usually have a tank in your squad already...or your gear might be so good that you're better off tanking yourself. This means you'll usually use your DD pets more often than not.
Pets in squads
Pets will often be used for pulling monsters and/or bosses. Other times they might have to tank for the squads. In general they can be a decent DD addition to the squad.
During early levels the pet debuffs Howl/Pierce will be stronger than that of players like Clerics, Barbarians, Venomancers etc. but at higher levels you'll have to start paying attention not to accidentally overwrite the classes' powerful debuffs (especially if they are Sage/Demon) with the pet's.
Other useful skills to have is Threaten to lower the bosses' physical attack to help the tank out, or Shriek that interrupts attacks (100% at max level, level 80).
If you are in a squad where the tank dies and there is no other person capable of tanking, you, as a Venomancer, have to take action. If your pet is able to tank the boss, simply grab aggro and keep healing your pet until your tank is alive again. If your pet, however, is unable to tank the particular boss you can call your pet back, after making sure aggro is on the pet (pet should be set on Manual in order for this to work). Keep running around and have your pet follow you. This way, the pet will rarely get hit and will be able to survive long enough, until your tank is ready again.
Pets are generally useful for tanking adds spawned by bosses, escorting players and other miscellaneous jobs. You might discover a variety of ways of using your pet; just experiment.
Auto-cultivation (botting) with pets
Suitable pets for botting are either pets with good DD power to help you kill monsters faster or tank pets that require less healing and have a lower risk of dying.
You will need to set Heal Pet on the Assisting slot. How often you need to use it will be determined by how often your pet will need heals. I suggest setting up your bot and observe it to see how often and how much damage your pet takes.
The two basic ways to go about with botting is to 1. set your pet on auto so that it attacks whenever you attack or gets attacked or 2. set your pet on defend so that it attacks monsters that attack your Venomancer.
The first option will generally help you kill faster since the pet will always be attacking. The second option will be safer for your Venomancer as the pet is going to attack and aggro extra monsters that might attack you.

PvP
In PvP most pets aren't strong enough to survive so you'll probably either get a Baby Blazing Phoenix or a Monkey King.
In lower level PvP, if there is any, the pets are pretty strong and Flesh Ream pet skill doesn't suffer from the PvP damage reduction. During the first years of the game, the Phoenix was able to solo AA players and still hit hard on LA and HAs. Now at endgame good gear is easier to get (G16 Nirvana) so the pet damage isn't significant anymore, even more so against R9rr players. With that in mind you'll probably want to use the pet as support.
The first step would be to get good defensive Inherit rolls and a good Mood. Secondly, you'll want to teach your pet some buffs like Strong and/or Protect, especially if you're more serious about PvP.
The pet will be used mainly for stunning though Shriek on a Phoenix (assuming it didn't learn Strong/Protect so it has one skill slot empty) can be handy because it interrupts. Alternatively, the magic defence debuff Howl might be a decent choice too. You can send your pet to stun an enemy while you run up to them to Purge/debuff. The Monkey has better stunlock abilities than the Phoenix so you can also use it to chain stuns and allow you to use some good attack or debuff combos.
If you are Demon, you might actually consider going for a more offensive approach with the pet and keep Flesh Ream to combine it with Demon Ironwood's proc (especially when Arcane Antinomy is on cooldown). This might work out quite well though my personal advice would be to build your PvP pet for defence/support.

~Botting with Hercules.

7. Venomancer builds & pet choices
This is for PvE only. In PvP the choices are mostly between a Phoenix and a Monkey. The build won't matter too much. Vit builds would give pets more HP. Pets' attack is affected by gear so the Venomancer's magic doesn't matter. Defences will come from gear. For more information read the pet upgrade & evolution guide (link in 1. Pet Basics).
Arcane Armor builds
If you start out with an AA build, your priority will be to have a decent tanking pet. Your physical defence will be low. Even if your magic defence is fine, the low HP will not help your case. You will surely want to have a pet that can work as your meat shield.
Even if you follow a Vit AA build and/or start out with Dreamchaser pack gear, which is really strong, you might still want to have a trusted tank pet by your side.
As you progress through the levels you will get stronger and you'll have to start picking a DD pet. If you've already picked one, you might want to level it up if it has fallen behind in levels. At later levels, your playstyle and how often you squad or solo will determine what pets you use but I would still advice keeping a tank pet around - just in case!
At endgame you'll probably rely on your squad more than your pet so you'll most likely use your DD/support pet(s) more than a tank pet, unless your tank pet is also your DD pet.
If you decide to get R9rr you'll eventually become stronger than your pet when it comes to tanking but if you've taken your loyal tank pet all the way up to level 100 you might as well evolve it and keep it around, even more so if it's a Baby Hercules...those can be handy even for R9rr players sometimes.
If you decide to follow a full Vit AA build, probably for PvP, you would be benefited from a DD pet during PvE activities since your damage will be lower. Your Vit will also give your pets more HP so your DD pet should be tankier than other pets. In addition to that, pet attack Inherit is only affected by gear and weapon, not by your base magic attack.
Keep in mind refines, shards and ornaments play a significant role. Being a Vit build will not automatically make you tanky if your refines are low and your ornaments aren't good; you might still need to use a tank pet.
Light Armor builds
As an LA build your HP and defences will be more balanced and you'll still have decent attack despite having to sacrifice some magic points. Despite this, you will still need a tank pet to have around but you might find yourself using a DD pet more often than an AA build.
There isn't much to say about LA builds as they are similar to AA builds when it comes to pet choices for the most part. Playstyles may vary among different players though. Some might prefer tank pets and some might prefer DD pets.
At endgame people often switch to HA or to AA for R9rr. In both cases you won't need a tank pet much but if you still have yours, you could keep in case it's ever needed. If you decide to stick to LA even at endgame (assuming you'll get G16 Nirvana), you'll probably use a DD pet more.
Keep in mind refines, shards and ornaments play a significant role. Being an LA build will not automatically make you tanky if your refines are low and your ornaments aren't good; you might still need to use a tank pet.
Heavy Armor builds
Players usually don't start with an HA build but re-stat to it later after level 80+ or at level 100. If you're that type of person then read about AA or LA builds' pets depending on what you choose.
If you're planning to start with an HA build then you may want to consider a magic tank pet to compensate for your low magical defences. Apart from that you will definitely benefit from a good DD pet as you're going to have lower magic attack. If you like playing in Fox Form a lot, your Str will boost your physical attack and fox attacks but it's still good to have a DD pet by your side then. You could even teach it Pierce so that you won't have to switch to Human Form for Ironwood's debuff.
A physical tank pet won't be as necessary but I would still advice getting one because they can be handy. As you progress through the game and get better elemental ornaments, you might eventually stop needing a magic tank. Whether you'll want to keep it around, it is up to you.
At endgame you'll probably stick to a DD/support pet most of the time so invest in a good a DD pet!
Keep in mind refines, shards and ornaments play a significant role. Being an HA build will not automatically make you tanky if your refines are low and your ornaments aren't good; you might still need to use a tank pet.
8. Leveling pets
At the beginning your pets won't have much trouble keeping up with you in levels but soon they'll start falling behind and you'll have to take care of them or maybe you're a high level Venomancer that just tamed a low level pet or recently acquired a legendary pet that needs lots of leveling...so what can you do?
Before looking into ways to level up your pets you need to remember a few things first!
- Loyalty affects the EXP the pets gain so make sure your pets' loyalty is high.
- The max EXP a pet can get per monster kill is 15.
- The monster/boss has to be higher level than the pet otherwise the pet won't gain EXP.
- Pets get full EXP (15) from killing [?] monsters/bosses.
- Your pet or your Venomancer has to have the first hit otherwise your pet won't gain EXP. If you're in a squad and other people hit monsters first, your pet won't gain EXP.

It's still a bit of a WIP. I'll need some feedback/suggestions from others on what I could add. I also want to write more into the Using Pets section but I had no inspiration so I'll get back to it letter.
If you have ideas, suggestions or other useful stuff to add let me know. I realised I should probably make a section for different Venomancer builds & pets and botting.

It's not good like the others in list, but it can be useful if you need a DD and you don't have time to raise a scorpion or wanderer after lvl 85. I think it's very good that we have some alternatives for pets after lvl 80, so we can grind our teeth until lvl 100 and use Feral Stars to lvl up pets if we can't let our veno botting in Room 4 or such. Armored Bear, Celestial Plumpfish, Mothran Dazzlewing and Ninetail firefox can work for a while. b:bye Hi, I have questions about evolved pets.1. From what I read, the evolved pets will get bonus stat based on the veno's gears. Now, is it the gear's grade or type? Like for example, will my evolved Herc get a better def if I wear G16 HA compared to G16 AA?
2. Is the mood stat bonuses change the pet in drastic way? Like for example will a Drizzy with def stat bonus overpower Supreme Walker without def stat bonus?
I think that's all for now, thanks and great guide btw! b:chuckleb:thanks0 -
Inheritances have only to do with your gears' actual stats, not the grade (though, in general, higher grade gears have higher stats.) HA has higher pdef and lower mdef than AA, so if you wear HA when summoning your pet it will have higher pdef and lower mdef than if you summoned it while wearing AA of the same grade.
It's very unlikely that a Drizzy will end up with higher defenses than a Supreme Walker[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
