How to add an argument to the element client

Hello! i've been lurking on the forums the past few days and seen many people posting about bypassing arc with a "start by patcher" argument. however to the average person that isn't much help, most won't even know what an argument is or how to add it into the file. posts like the one below aren't exactly helpful if they don't explain how to do it.

just simply start elementclient.exe using the argument "startbypatcher" and you're good to go.

Just make sure to start the 1st of the two clients using arc, so you don't miss any updates.

copy the element client and paste a shortcut. right click and go into properties and where it says "target" at the end of the filepath on the right add (with the quotes) "startbypatcher"

save it and your good to go. the shortcut now starts up the games client and skips everything else.

I'm not even sure what is going on with Arc... I've been able to start PWI normally like I have been for years. One time I started PWI through Arc but after it booted up all I did was alt-tab and close out Arc.. Pic

Update: Finally restarted my computer and now Arc is mandatory, when trying to close Arc in the picture above it tells me that it cannot close while an application is running.

Another update: this was my attempt at the argument and a few things I think should be stated.

    (Images Provided for Steps)

    1) Go through your directory and find "elementclient", it will be the one I have selected in the image. Right click and choose "Create Shortcut". A moment will pass and "elementclient - shortcut" will be created nearby. Click and drag this item onto your desktop.

    2) Here is the shortcut on your desktop. Right click the icon and choose "Properties".

    3) At the end of the Target, make a Space and then type "startbypatcher" with the quotation marks this time. Now just click Apply and you are done.

If this post seems redundant and you already understood then that is fine; I made this because I felt like more pictures and being as specific as I could would help the 1% that still didn't understand.

arc has several issues, i found the first time after patching it starts up normally. tho after that one time it forces arc to load and you can't open another client. by using the argument in the shortcut it loads just the client, completely skipping the patcher and arc altogether.

tbh arc by itself isn't that bad. i could deal with it. but i think people who have an older system, low ram, etc are having issues, also if you downloaded pwi before arc (or even with an older arc) it has a different file structure

    (pre-arc directory) C:Perfect World Entertainment>perfect world international>etc
    (after-arc ) C:programs>perfect world entertainment>PWI_en>etc

if you have a pre arc directory for the game it can not find it. i believe there is a tool floating around to fix it tho.

so the argument just skips the hassle, tho you will still need arc to update the game when needed.

Could someone copy and paste the whole line from their "target" with the the argument "startbypatcher". I have tried this several times in different ways and I keep getting that it's not a valid pathway.

    Thanks for your help

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Perfect World Entertainment\PWI_en\element\elementclient.exe" "startbypatcher"

just add a space after the last part in the file path and put startbypatcher in quotes:

    "startbypatcher"

I think it depends on what flavor of Windows you have.

    I've seen the following....
    ["C:\Perfect World Entertainment\Perfect World International\element\elementclient.exe" startbypatcher]
    [C:\Perfect World Entertainment\Perfect World International\element\elementclient.exe startbypatcher]
    ["C:\Perfect World Entertainment\Perfect World International\element\elementclient.exe startbypatcher"]

SylenThunder... Your a life saver. the first line worked perfectly for me. Many many thanks.

It took me 3x of complete (regedit) delete and re-install of ARC to to get the thing working. It has tried to add stuff to my other 2 web- browsers which I stopped but it did do my Firefox.

That worked so well it only took 10 minutes before this thread would open.

After firing up ARC to log in, it screwed up my accounts so much so that yes, I could access 1 of 2 servers I play, but it could not access my character vaults. Nothing like logging into game and not access character one has played for 5 years.

How wonderful of PWI to force yet another buggy as hell piece of software that no one wants.

possibly, i've always used the config i gave, i used it for a long time to get around needing admin rights to run the game. i know that works on windows 7 and 8.1, i' sure that will help others greatly, ty for the input.

Ok, I'm so far from computer savvy it's sad. Where do I find the "Target" path?
I've copied and pasted the elementclient shortcut, right clicked and went into properties...But where do I find "Target?"

I run Windows XP if that makes anything different. :<

right click the shortcut and select properties. come to think of it it might say something other then target depending on the version of windows you have. just add startbypatcher to the end of the file path (should be somewhere in the properties menu)

On Windows 7, it's under the shortcut tab when you go into Properties. idk about XP though. Been quite awhile since I've used that.

Here's an easy to follow visual aid to complement what BlackRose already explained 'bout adding arguments to a Windows shortcut.

Rather than add a string just rename stringtab.txt in the patcher folder as Sevchenko - Dreamweaver pointed out in another post or even delete it, and launch via elementclient or patcher as before.

Here's what I did(I'll just re-post what I just posted in another thread):
A friend shared a simpler solution(or at least explained how to do it more simply), so here goes: start game, it will bring up arc sign in, so sign in, it will bring you to the main character screen, minimize. Go to start menu, computer, C drive, PerfectWorld, element, elemntclient(DON'T double click), pick, right click, create short cut, then drag shortcut to desktop, then double clik and it will go directly to log in screen. I have Windows 7, so that is how I had to do it. The old way was to using a second user as administrator. Anyhow, wanted to share that in a plain english, more easily understood, step by step solution, which someone shared with me. Nothing fancy.

This should work if you have Windows 7. Once you have both clients in open and in the task bar it's a matter of just remembering which is which. your first or main account will be overlaying the second account, dual window. Hang your cursor over it and bring one of them up. Enjoy! No need to start a new file path or rename it, unless you want to do that. Depends on your operating system, whether it's Windows 7, XP, whatever, and how your task bar is set up on your computer. Like I said, I have windows 7, this is how it worked for me. See you in game. b:victory

Note: actually I didn't re post, I copied and pasted! xD Oh well, I'm still learning.

Thanks very much OP, I installed arc, did the whole registry edit etc and it worked fine....

When all I had to do was modify the target. Pfft, you guys KNOW stuff. Anyway, I'll keep ARC installed for a bit in case pwi try some other trick, but elementclient opens fine now with your method.

you will still need to update pwi somehow so you will need to keep arc.

i know the game doesn't, but you can't start the game without them unless you skip the patcher/arc. both immediately ask for rights as soon as they open. so i used this as a work around to play on other computers.
