Should I ask more of people?

After coming back to PWI about a month and a half ago after a year (on/off) away, I recently saw a guy who used to spam chat asking for help with quests/bh/gear (you all know the kind I'm sure). He had full r9 and I asked him how he got it. "People helped me farm it" was his reply. I was quite shocked. People used to get so pissed with him constantly spamming guild chat with requests to do all his quests/bhs etc. Now I got myself to r8 by trading/farming dq points for even gold refines. One friend did sell me lunar cape for 1m and one sold me tokens quite cheap so i could get my demon skillbook clip. But it seems everyone I see with R9rr had lots of help getting it. As someone who never asks for help gearing up, should I? I always thought it was cheeky as hell to ask people to help me gear my character up.

To be brutally honest, I'm with you on this. That kind of behaviour is annoying as hell o_o I'm guessing the guy is simply lying because I can't imagine a faction being so generous. If you have like a farming buddy that you have been with for a long time, it seems possible. But that way? Eh o_o

Patience, and perseverance goes a long way to getting r9, you don't necessarily need a specific group of ppl to help you do quests etc in order to get there.

There was indeed a time or two where I did in fact get in a squad of the exact same people, but still over all the squad of people who I joined has been random well over 95% of the time. (Though yes some people I stick around/will join if I know something is going to be a lot less tedious/annoying, but still... overall its been fairly random.

Save up coin as much as possible, become a hoarder, don't use your coin on needless things, and you'll get it before you know it.

Bounty hunter rewards saved up is a nice way to get there and it has led me to my (eventual... REALLY REALLY close to the r9 blade on it, already have the ring) r9 of my seeker, sure it obviously didn't happen overnight, andthere are indeed times where I slipped up and spent the money saved on stupid needless things, but still it is doable.

    ---

Also you could indeed merchant... (something of which I haven't done in a long while) that could eventually get you r9 without the help of others.

    --

Now don't get me wrong, there was indeed a time early on, where people would let me tag along in order to 'help farm' my gear... but that was indeed in the early days... these days its easier to do things yourself.... IF you have enough patience... or hell enough money to just swipe a CC.

In short: No you do not need to rely on others to get yourself r9... sure if there are people willing to help, and you can accept that, then by all means do it that way... its much faster.

It really depends - for R9rr you need lots of things if you are going to farm it. The trick is to find like minded good peeps that are also doing their gears - friend them and do the runs together splitting dungeon loot haul, I have helped people to farm their gear either G16 or r9rr but I always make it clear that I will not be doing every run with them - farming your end game gear is a massive effort (and it's not even all the effort you still have refines and shards after that) it's not fair to expect people to do it all for you - but if you've got good friends you run with that are also hunting similar things you should be working out who needs what dungeons and scheduling for when you're all getting it done (or I could just be too organised in my approach to the game b:surrender).

I've spent the last few 2xs with my group spamming lunar for EOD's for all, and Warsong for those pesci molds that just won't drop (and the squillions of badges ppl need). Gear is a marathon you need friends to keep you company on your journey they make it more fun - just make sure you help them too if they need other things to you.

Well you been gone for a year... NW was more profitable quite a while ago and I know a lot of people got their r9 farmed this way.
Personally I had few pieces of r9 before NW was out, finished it by doing NW a couple times and buying on 50% sale (aaand gold was also lower that time)
r999 I almost purely merchanted (selling AEU chests, they were worth 3-3.5mil each that time, I did AEU runs with really good friends so I bring in alt as well for more chests) where my highest profit was 120mil during ONE night (I dont NW btw)..
Its a bit harder now I feel by farming since I started r999ing my cleric.. I dont think ill finish her unless I get into some massive merchanting again.

I merchant my way to R9 armor (still need weapon and belt) in 9 months buying and selling 24/7 on one account. The biggest hurdle for R9 is getting to R9. At the time I started, it was about 1.2 billion coins and I admit it does sound alot but when you break it down piece by piece its very doable to merchant your R9.

At the current prices (25 million MoG, 6 million GST)
    Ornaments 267 million (x2)
    Armor 134 million (x4)
    Weapon 635 million

plus rep, if you still need.

These numbers other than the weapon didn't concern my since I was able to turn a profit 15 - 25 million profit from my shop weekly; and, it was about 30% cheaper back then.

R9 -> R9r is very easy with NW (SWTs are about 40 million to buy much less if you farm).

R9r -> R9rr difficulty is getting your class mold to drop but very farmable with a group or random squad.

this. though some of us on PWI dont mind helping people farm. there are quite a few friends ive helped farm r9 for, and even up to r9rr. just dont be a tool about it and there will be a surprising number of people to help you, even if its just letting you tag along for a TT run
