"The Ancient Lost Art of Flight," aka, Where did all the air content go?

In the eons before recorded history, in a pixelated ancient China, the peoples Lost to Time utilized their sacred art of flight. The most skilled practitioners of this complex technique gained advantages in their war against the Wraiths... and against themselves. But alas; this would not last forever, for the digital sun rises and falls, without care for the culture, people, and history that it grinds away...

Today, with the advent of modern technology such as the Pure E-5 Accessory Wristwatch, and the discovery of the vacation destination of Nay'sheen-Worze, we have lost the Art of Flight. Where have the practitioners of this sacred technique gone? We have lost a relic of the past, in exchange for the decadent promises of the future.

tl;dr: Why have wings been marginalized?

PvE
.We don't really use wings in PvE now
.There are no instances that allow wings
.There are no events that encourage flight
.Flying is merely a matter of convenience for the PvE player

PvP
.We only use wings to get to point A to point B
.We don't see mass PvP in the air anymore (actual fighting)
.We don't see 1v1s in the air anymore

Personally, I've played Perfect World for a very long time. But it seems to me that over time, the importance of wings has been lost.
I see no mass PvP in the air, except for isolated events on old-school servers such as Lost City (and even those are rare). When I attempt to initiate any air PvP, I get the infamous "..." of a blank digital stare.
And, of course, no one kills flying mobs anyways. The only flying mobs back in the day were Foxwings, but those were items of level 60 interest and we have FC now.

What do you guys think about this issue? Should we leave the "Art of Flight" to die - is it too old or just too marginalized to revive? Or, if we should bring it back: how would we do it?

Will we hold a funeral or rebirth ceremony for the importance of our wings?

    i agree, if no one noticed it, must be blind XD

    but thats like underwater content imo. at low lvl i was kinda "scared" about quests underwater, because mobs could gank you easily and didnt have fast ways to escape xD

    they shuld implement some real instance 100% in air or underwater, for farming or w/e purpose.

    there was once a rumor about a TW map underwater. could be fun to have it + one where you have to fly all the time (could replace catas by bombs or something like this)

    would bring something fun back in the game

    I agree not being able to fight in or from the air is a pitfall - not that I do any form of PvP anymore. But, I know when I do get back to it I would find the loss of being able to heal or fight in or from the air totally off-putting. f:angry

    Clerics and Mystics have GOT to be the two slowest chars in the game, in TW and NW we need to be able to fly AND do things. o_O

    Well I know with pk, Flying is something nobody wants to do anymore.... Once long ago i used to pk on my wizard and would fly about 80% of the time while pking XD Now flying is considered a noob move in pking.... Big change eh.

    Outside of traveling or having to kill a few airborne wraiths, but the former's mostly optional and the latter is irrelivent in the face of hyper fc...

    Ive used mine a lot in NW to either reach crystals faster than most mounts can (via Tradewinds+Accelerate) or to catch up[ to Charger Orb-using flag carriers to stun them in Capture the Flag fights...

    Harder for Melee classes to catch ranged enemies who are flying around, but with skills like Reel In and Berserker's Wrath, Flying isn't really all that effective. Also, a lot of the high-end arcanes rely on Purify Spell's speed boost/Holy Path if they want to kite.

    @Above: Yeah, but here's the thing. In PvP, people use wings to get from point A to point B. They don't actually fight high above the ground now, where they WOULDN'T have been vulnerable to anti-air Barbartillery.

    I've sort have grown nostalgic for the subtlties of air PK - activating speed at the right time, reserving genie skills for air-pk alone, the carefully timed deactivation of wings for damage-reduction air-ground bonus... (see Transcend's videos).

    I'm wondering if there's some way to revive that. We're all stuck on a two dimensional plane right now; I'd like to see if we can make
    (skill)^2 < gear
    into
    (skill)^3 > gear.

    Three dimensions ftw?

    The only problem with air pvp is that it makes end game players (casters especially) nearly impossible to kill due to an extra escape (dropping for half damage). I kite into the air regularly, but it causes all kinds of butthurt.

    Im sorry, but this really needs to be said...


    I am currently 5300 and change HP, unbuffed. Two weeks ago, I was 4988 HP, unbuffed. Even buffed, its hard to see my way further than right under 6K HP.

    My Phys. Res. is 3300 and change, unbuffed, and 5500 and change self buffed.

    Dont you think the OP melee players - for the sake of a 'challenge' - who come after poor defenseless me should have a hard time catching me?? f:strive

    Of course they should - thats why they all have some skills or means to combat a disparity of distance. Against endgame arcanes with Purify (making it more difficult to lock them down while they're flying/falling once you do close the distance) and lowered damage while falling can make things rather annoying, though.

    I remember those days.. doing quest in the water. when you are lowbie with normal gear, without charm, squishy and without wings, that experience can be scary but definetly made the game more fun.

    Back to main topic of this post, yeah i agree. We need more instances, events and pvp in water and air. Compared to other games, only few of them can use wings or any way of flying in the sky. PWI got that advantage and i think should be use it more.

    Air pvp on HL pretty much died when everyone else decided they weren't gonna deal with a certain guild flying to ******n max height every single time they wanted to pvp.

    Thank you Euthymius. I need to ask this too, since I seriously am missing something with the complaint about a 5% to 10% proc depending on whether the caster is R8r or R9r. Not that I wish to rehash the whole arguement, but obviously Clerics are not and have not been a threat with their Purify spell. Mystics have a spell related purify proc that goes off about 25% to 35% of the time depending on Culti. Never saw anyone complain about those 2 classes similar abilities prior to the weapon proc coming along.

    So, which of the other Caster classes are too OP with a 5% to 10% proc on their weapon? I remember the discussion thread/poll, but I dont remember any specifics about what caster class has all the melee totally annoyed by it.

    You should be happy/lucky you get any pvp action going on in the first place.

    I don't pk at all, but I can imagine why pvp in flight would be the most absurd tedious time-stretching way to fight.

    If you want to use flight, then fly during a fight, if they don't come after you, their loss, you can use it to your advantage to use w/e from the air. Unless it's a barb since they can drop you down again.

    PvE Wise flight never was a big deal besides moving around to places, which... seems kinda mainly the point of flight... as in travelling...

    Other than that, I couldn't care less.

    not sure why you wouldn't have wings but yeah... deep under the sea, barely any light, killing sharks while a storm was raging on the surface.... so scary and thrilling and fun!

    Gotta agree, it's not just the air content that suffers but also the underwater one.

    Back in the day I was most excited to get my first flyer and do air quests (started with a Venomancer, I know elves could fly from level 1) and I was equally excited to fight monsters underwater.

    I'd kill for having some air and underwater instances. I can't see them adding much in the open world map but at the very least they could add a couple of new instances. I was majorly disappointed when I found out the TB didn't have a nice underwater FB19 or that their capital city wasn't underwater.

    Yeah! Almost no caster does fly anymore in NW. I always pray to pan gu that they might use their wings/fly mounts. My two sparks are always waiting for you b:cry.

    I still kite into the air when I'm taking on multiple and/or over-geared targets in nw. Those who give chase are easily taken out, and those who disengage die anyway since they somehow "forget" that I can easily drop and can still stun & paralyze from range. Good times:)

    I like this. I agree. There should be instances that require flight or swimming skills. What's the point of creating a water class if you can't use the skill. No one even levels the swimming mastery skill, what's the point. You spend, maybe, 3 quests from your culti under water. I'd like to see more flying too. An instance that requires the use of all mastery skills would be awesome. Similar to WS, u need certain classes for certain pavs. In a new instance, you need certain mastery skills for certain pavs.

    There used to be certain situations where you would have quests underwater before you could get wings at level 15. And some of them were somewhat dangerous, not having all the goodies at those levels back then (jones/omalley, charms, pack gear).

    PvE - DGAF i dont kill mobs apart from BQ

    PvP - yes please! As an elf I enjoy spreading my wings and poking things with the wind in my long ears. Mass pvp on the ground is never going to be as instense as mass pvp in the air due to extra dimension of space that you can utilise and watch out for range wise.

    I blame everyone that rolled an assasin when TB came out as the reason no one air fights anymore. Naturally BMs and kitties sided with them and us elves and wizzehs were looked down (pun?) upon for air fighting.

    Well no more my brethren, let us take to the skies and heavens beyond!!

    altho archers are a pain in the rear to fight when they go to the air air pvp is actually quite interesting. UNDERWATER/FLYING INSTANCE PLZ!!!!!!!!!!! they almost got it right with ocean tusker area but didnt include mobs QQ
