Your Opinion: Those Female Chars played by Guys.

Well, we've all seen them. The nice looking girl you're talking to, suddenly saying "I'm a guy," or if you're unlucky, suddenly saying it after you give them free stuff. Your friend who you never knew was a male. Or your friend that you have known was a male for a long time, and yet they still get hit on by other guys.

When you see a girl character who admits to being a guy behind the keyboard, what is your first thought?
What do you think of the cross-gender characters of PWI? :o

(Note: I have nothing against those with "different" sexual orientations. D: Was merely curious, especially since I prefer female archer and sin animations. XD)

Edit: For those who think people roll play, that would be under "Artistry" Acting->drama->art

For some it can be something different, it can be because that's the "character" they choose to be inside of an MMO.

I choose to play a female (even though I'm a male) in most MMO's because that's who the character "Krisnda" is, I'm more comfortable playing that character than trying to create a entirely different character. I guess you can say that it's sort of a "acting" thing in a way, I can't really explain it that well.

Lets not get crazy with this topic either. f:stare I'm watching.

Ah, ok. But again, yes it's kinda like that, but eh, a little more than that xDD.

How come it can't be just be because it's a change of pace from playing guys on most games? Or just because they picked it on a whim? I've played guy characters on a whim in plenty of games, and I'm a female. I don't think there has to be any thought out reasons or sexual interests just to play a video game character. :P

Where's the option for "They felt like it and chose so at a whim"?

Females playing males do the same thing at times and yet I don't see any huge attempt to understand rationalize it.

Nope. The vast majority of game characters are males. Sometimes you want something different to look at while playing. I've made male characters for that reason, in games that give me the choice. Even though when given the choice I typically play females. Heck I've got a barb on HT that I made on a whim because I was tired of only playing around with female fashion.

Sadly, once the poll is made I can't change it. I mostly asked because it seems to me that there is a lot of need to rationalize men choosing to play female characters but not the other way around when these polls come around. >>

    Nah.

It's more like getting bored of looking at one thing and choosing to do another just for a change of pace.

It'd be the equivalent of making a team of 4 fighters in Final Fantasy but getting bored after a while and deciding to do 4 white mages instead.

NO, why does it have to sexual preference at all? Sometimes I change up the soft drinks I play too. Or play alts instead of my mains. Nothing to do with sexual preference. I don't enjoy looking at female pixels more than male pixels or vice versa. To me they are just pixels and have nothing to do with real life men and women. I'm a heterosexual female for example, but that doesn't mean I prefer looking at male toons. I don't really care either way, it's just pixels.

Maybe "Sexual Preference" isn't the right term. But it'd fall under the category of Enjoys looking at a female character during gameplay., no?

Not if you don't have a particular enjoyment of either sex. Mmm, its like getting lemonade instead of orange juice. Its just variety. I enjoy changing things up (variety is the spice of life) more than I care about gender my character is. I'm the type of person that would use the joke weapons in fighting games just for something different to look at. I get bored looking at the same things all the time. The animations change when you change the toons gender, as do the clothing. So it's more about the act of the change, then what i'm changing it to.

    Again, nope.

It's just a simple manner of mixing it up. My sexual preference has nothing to do with the fact that while I normally play females in various games, I'll sometimes play a male or two as well.

Each person has his or her own reason for choosing to be this or that/a male or female character.

The one that gets on my nerves the most is the male playing a female to get 'free' things and end up hurting others in the process, though i'll likely never fall for it, since I am stingy with my ****. *hides*

I don't particularly enjoy any types of characters. I'm more likely to be immersed into the world in an mmo, or the story in an RPG, or the gameplay in shooters/platformers, than caught up on what character I'm playing. The character itself is just a means to enjoy those things and I derive no particular enjoyment from it being male, female, wolf, alien, solider, etc. That being said, most games force me to be a male. So when given the choice, I default to female. But being a female by default in games that give me the choice, can also easily become routine. So I'll just choose to be a guy. It's just a way to switch things up. I couldn't careless about the gender of my toon. If the gameplay is good, or the storyline is engaging (in those cases, I do care but not because of gender but because of a well written story), or if the game is stupidly simple but just plain ole fun, I'll enjoy. Regardless of whatever gender I happen to be.

    You're wrong. :P

I'm a female. I mostly play females because. Sometimes when I don't feel like playing a female for whatever reason (boredom, lack of interest, coin flip, don't like how that game's females look, already have them, etc) I'll play a male instead.

There's no need to try and make some big overreaching reason for it and I find this sort of thing as tremendously silly since it's always about males on female characters instead of the opposite. Yet trying to ask this is essentially like asking why a person decided to eat an apple instead of an orange during a random day of the week.

From my understanding the "whatever reason" would be what the poll is voting for. Do more people's reason fall under looks (Aristry)? Got bored of looking at it(Sexual preference in this case)? etc?

I guess it's missing one for Boredom, though I'd think that would be Aristry because the reason why you're bored of male/female would be because the opposite looks better.

I don't think anything of others who do that as I myself have characters of both genders.
In my case - I do it because I fancy the idea of roleplay (which is sadly incredibly rare here) but also because I enjoy building up and making stories for and surrounding the characters I created.

As far as I'm concerned, as long as they aren't using their pixels to trick somepony out of something or to lead them on, I see nothing wrong with it. However, I do still find it silly that a player can be fooled into giving items to somepony they barely know just because "they look pretty/sexy" or because of some sort of virtual attraction.

The largest amount of people likely do it on a whim.

However the way the poll is setup (not to mention mainstream view of this) is.. not very conducive towards that or letting people realize/understand that.

Personally, I didn't vote due to a lack of an option along the lines of "Because it's a game and they realize the gender of the character doesn't mean a thing so they just did it because they felt like it", and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has seen this thread and hasn't voted for a similar reason.

I'd really like to clarify to this thread.

This is not a thread for people who play female characters to express their opinions on their choice.

This is a thread and a poll to see what the PWI Public thinks of a certain minority group. Not to persecute or discuss those people - just what our first impression is.

We're not discussing why we picked apples or oranges; we're discussing what we think of someone who chose an apple, vs someone who chose an orange.

Several years ago I know that the community pretty much was scared/homophobic towards transgender characters, but I was wondering for today's time period.

My first impression when finding out is "kay, then." I'd start using male pronouns if I know the person well enough. But if I find out and it's some random person in a squad. I'll probably continue to call them by their characters in-game gender since it doesn't make enough of an impression on me to remember or care. Probably because I don't think of reasons why they might have chosen to do so. That does likely stem from my own mindset towards selecting a gender. Since I put so little thought into it myself, I don't question why others would. Just like I don't pay much attention if my friend orders lemonade instead of soda for dinner, or if someone chose red hair for their toon on white. The two are related.

No multiple choice in the poll seems kinda generalizing...

Yeah this kind of poll really needs the 'can choose multiple options'....

Also, I've seen a bunch of blabbering about this option: Sexual Preference (Enjoys looking at a female character during gameplay.) in that it's less of 'wants to watch a female character' than it is 'doesn't want to have to watch the behind of a male character all the time'... I think the difference there is that the 'doesn't want to have to watch the behind of a male character all the time' is more aesthetic (or, artistic in this poll, which was kind of a bard word), and creating a female character specifically to look at them is the sexual option. (I didn't read all of that conversation because it looked like this whole debate thing and I didn't want to even deal with it after a post or two, aha, but still offering my cents.) But, yeah, the poll is kind of badily worded, somewhat redundant, and etc, which sucks because I do think some thought was put into it to try and figure out what to ask. Some.

And yeah, venos. [And then having fashion on your veno and wanting to be able to share it between characters so you don't have to get more stupid sets so end up just making more female characters p-p]
And... there was something about specific characters being certain genders just because that specific character is said gender and having nothing to do with the player, but I don't remember who commented on that, so I'll just dully note that's a thing, too.

For characters in squads who are different genders than the players: I just always use the characters' names. (and the pronoun 'they' if saying something like 'go up to ___ when they ___ because there's no way to know which pronoun they prefer, and if you use that, it's someone's bushiness if they want to say what they are, but they won't get all 'upset and correct-y'.) There's way too many people in squads to start being vague by using pronouns all the time.

Ultimately, though, I fail to see why it even matters. Also, G.I.R.L.s are a minority group? I thought they were the majority e.e

I'm a guy. I find it weird playing a female character. Last time I played one was my first MMO about 15 years ago, and I deleted her thanks to all the prepubescent spankbankers hitting on her, even after I told them I was a guy playing. I swore to never again play a female character, and personally I don't treat anyone any different in game whether they are male or female in pixels or behind the screen.

That and if I'm going find a date with a woman, she is going to be local and someone I meet face to face.

I am offended because of the wreckless insinuations and perverted bias in the poll. I am a guy and I chose to play a veno because at the time it was one of the best classes for playing the game solo when I created it. Why? because that is the style of gameplay I am most comfortable with. And that logic of my choice was very sound at the time.

If you had added a selection based on the char's skill set and class advantages for how a user feels most comfortable with in gameplay in your poll I would have much more respect for it. But not a poll that illustrates such grotesque demagoguery and a complete lack of respect for most of us guys who play female chars such as this.

Sure there are some out there who scam and play on other's shortsighted emotional weaknesses but I know for a fact that scammers use all classes for their nefarious intentions. And yes there are guys out there who fall for what they believe are females playing female chars but that is really their own problem. They set themselves up for whatever happens. Hell I've had guys try to seduce me because I play a veno. I just tell them I play the game to play the game and not to use it as a dating service. I am reluctant to go beyond that with any shred of personal information because I have no idea who's on the other side of those pixels. I want no contact with most people beyond the pixels that make up my veno.

But to create an incredibly biased and loaded poll with innuendos and perverse stereotypes such as this is offensive. Almost all the guys I know who play female chars never engaged in such disgusting behavior. What next? A poll that insinuates that any girl or woman who plays a barb is a les bian? WTF????

My first character was a venomancer simply because upon looking up classes it was known to be a good solo class.

I made a male Cleric afterwards to counter balance it. Build never worked so I killed it off to remake. Made 2 other Clerics and killed them off. I decided heLL may as well let my last try be a girl. Build worked. 2 Str 1 Vit 7 Mag. This being identical to the male Archer I made in the mean time (except of course dex).

I made a male Psychic during that time frame as well.

One of the bigger reasons why I made female characters was that if I was needed, male characters could pick me up and move to where they needed me.

I guess I should mention my female sin. Freak accident xD I liked her a lot in the end anyways.

Edit: dang If I was paying attention to the poll I would put Artistry instead of No choice. As I do factor that in as well.
