PWI Windows 8 Compatibility

Hey guys, so here's the deal. My school is offering me a free copy of Windows 8. But, I recall reading something not too long ago that makes me question how well PWI will run with Windows 8. Logically, I would think there would be no issues. However, I thought it would be a better idea to ask if any of you have had problems or success with running this game using the Windows 8 OS. If this is the wrong place to post this, my apologies, I don't use forums too often.

Thanks in advance guys,
Mattiks

I've been playin PWI on windows 8 since beta. Now moved to the stable version and all is still fine. You won't have any issues moving to Win8.

Why would you want to switch to Windows 8 in the first place...? Just because it's new doesn't mean it's better.

Actually it is. It's WAY faster then Windows 7 and previous. And it plays PWI perfectly.

Oh and everything has much easier access, specially with touchscreen. I could put PWI elementclient.exe as an app shortcut on the app screen(where it normally boots into), and it'll switch to deskptop and open it in a flash. No need to use mouse.

Actually, just because you people are having good results doesn't particularly mean everyone else will. I can't even get PWI to install on my new laptop due to a list of problems. So I'm going to directly copy and transfer the files from my pc to my laptop and hope it works then. You might have issues or you might not, won't find out though until you try.

Your statement is completely relative. One mans gold is another's trash. The idea of taking a solid (yet primitive) design of using a mouse, keyboard, etc and combining it with "apps", touch screens, etc... Not great for a gamer.

I could go into an immense amount of reasons why Windows 8 is absolute garbage, but it's all relative. I do have Windows 8 on an ultrabook (without touch screen), but I don't like it and plan to throw Windows 7 w/ a dual-boot Ubuntu. If you need more info on reasons people dislike Windows 8, I'd suggest checking various sources like Google News and/or tech websites like Slashgear.

@OP: PWI is compatible with most Windows-based OS (XP and above; possibly even 2000/ME). You won't notice any performance differences based on the solely the OS, as long as it's Windows. Any issues that you run into are most definitely driver issues, lack of DX 9.0c, etc etc.

Windows 8 has a very steep learning curve, but is worth using.
I am using a very low end machine for win 8 but have noticed a nice improvement in overall performance since switching.
I hate touch screen stuff as putting dirty fingers on my viewing area has always led to scratching for me. I use a small free program from the net to Skip Modern(Metro) UI as I personally like using the desktop better.
    PWI runs fine for me.
Did not need to touch compatibility settings for the game just made sure the game has full admin permissions when it runs.

Hello all, I just purchased a new windows 8 PC and I am able to play the game for a short time, however I have been dcing constantly and lagging like crazy. I have already checked my internet connections, I have rebooted my modem, computer, router everything. I have called my IP and they said my connection is perfect with no problems. I have no problem playing this on my windows 7 laptop, and it plays well on my winodws 8 when its not dcing and lagging. I have 8 gig RAM, 3.30hz processor. This computer should be playing this just fine. I was told it could be my firewall interfering with the game but when I turn off my firewall completely and play it, it continues to do the same. I have ran the client in admin, and it continues to do the same. I have verified my files 3 times now and it continues to do it. It is becoming frustrating since I cannot stay logged in.... and i have noticed its mostly dcing and lagging in dungeons.... I was not able to NW last firday and today I dced in Metal 20 times then finally it let me play and finish the dungeon. Any help would be welcomed as I am strongly considering taking this computer back to purchase a different one with windows 7 on it. Thank you before-hand for any input.

Need more details (Speccy) and a traceroute from when you're having the issue

I have no idea how you would do a traceroute....however my computer is an HP Envy 20 Intel(R) Core (TM) i3-3220 CPU @ 3.30GHz... 8g RAM, 64-bit operating system. The dcing is also happening in another game I play. PWI will let me play for periods of time but it happens mainly in dungeons. I have to resort back to my laptop for NW/TW/BH etc.

I almost cannot believe I actually need to post this.....
    How to traceroute
    Speccy
How to publish a Speccy report

    Click those links.

Well, I could have looked up what a traceroute was....... but after reading what it does and what speccy is, how is that gonna tell you why I dc during my game play? and do I have to have PWI running when doing these?

A traceroute helps determine where your connection is dropping packets. It's useful for diagnosis of your problem, because we can come back after seeing it and say:
    "It was your ISP."
"It is your modem and/or wireless adapter in your PC."

PWI doesn't need to be on when you run diagnosis tests. It's very clear that the issue you're having isn't with Windows 8 or a video game. Somewhere, packets are being lost which is resulting in a short-term disconnection of inter connectivity. That's what running diagnosis tests are for.

Speccy can tell me if there is something else locally on your system that could be interfering with how the client is operating.

And you did say, "I have no idea how you would do a traceroute..." b:chuckle So I just provided the information to get you started. I do believe that there actually are some people who have no freaking clue how to use a search engine. Not saying you're one of them, but if one of those people reads this....

Uninstall Pando media booster. it is installed in the regular download of many MMORPGs (including all of PWEs). It can increase your ping speed massively (mine was 5500ms before, 200ms after) It uses your computer as a server for its torrent.

Good luck! Tell me if this helps! b:pleased

Not only a necro, but you are aware that PWI won't use more than 2GB of RAM right? (At least not without violating the ToS.)

I was thinking I might see an improvement by adding some RAM and replacing the 8800GT with a GTX650. Nope. I can turn on Shadows now without an impact in framerate, that's about it. And that was testing with the modification to allow the client to use more RAM.
