Case of attempted Extortion.

Yesterday while logged on an alt and looking to buy something in world chat i was pm'd by someone in whispers with the exact same name as my alt. He basically said to me that if i didn't pay him a sum of money then he would implement a **** program on my account and steal all of my gear and change all my passwords. He claimed that it was a new **** program that he had been given access to. Now i have been around long enough not to be so gullible but after seeing other peoples claims of hacking i got to thinking is this possible. What i am wondering is two things: 1. Is this actually possible. 2. Has anyone else experienced this type of thing and how did you handle it?
This seems a very serious offence to me with this being an international community, it seems to me that if the person trying to extort the other person is in a diffrent country then it would be breaching some type of criminal conduct. Any serious answers will be greatly appreciated.

Majority of people that get ****, did something to compromise the security of their accounts, they just don't admit it.

If you don't share your account with anyone (which i doubt) and didn't enter your infos on a lame fake site, you have nothing to worry about.

As PWI suggest just change your password often if you think your account is maybe not safe.

Edit: I'll had for people having a ''l'' or cap ''i'' in their name try to make a alt with the other so no one take your ''name''.

This may be the same guy that was "impersonating" faction leaders to get their members to send them stuff a while back. If your alt had a capital i or lower case L, or an m (since r+n looks just like m in the in-game font) in the name, it was most likely an impersonator, even capital M's can be impersonated very well with an IvI or lvl combo, since the in-game font is so easy to take advantage of.

Generally people that want to **** you that actually CAN wouldn't tell you first. They'd do it and take your money without asking. You don't see thieves asking you to pay them not to steal your TV, do you? b:chuckle

I advise you to report this user by sending a ticket to the GMs, if you took screenshots of said conversation, it would be best if you add them for further proof. Thanks!

I don't get why anyone would share account info, the risk of getting your stuff taken is so high and really you'd have to be an idiot to do so.

On Harshlands there's easy 95% of people sharing account.

There's some people i have on friend list i don't pm anymore cause they share with 3-4 persons and when you pm you never who gonna answer you cause too many people have access to the account.

On everyone that claimed be **** there's a lot that shared info, but they don't say it here cause they know they wont get help cause they did something they wasn't suppose.

A little true story: maybe 3 months ago someone said in guild chat:

''Someone: OMG MY HEAD AND WEAPON ARE MISSING!!!
Me: did you put maybe in bank??
    Someone: No i just checked.
    Someone: I GOT ****!!!
Me: Someone have your account info?
Someone: Yes, but it's a really good friend and i trust him.
    Me:...
Someone: he will never do that.

    15 minutes later:

    Someone: FC$?"?&&"/""!!!
    Me: Sup?
Someone: that ****** stole my stuff.
Me: sorry, but i don't pity you at all, you gave you info, your fault.
Someone: Was my best friend in Perfect Wolrd QQ.
    Someone: What i can do?
    Me: Nothing.
Someone: I'll send a ticket so they gimme back my stuff.
Me: Good luck, but you wont get any help, it's all your fault.
Someone: I won't tell them i did give my info.
Me: You really think they wont check if someone else logged your account?
    Someone: QQ.

And i see that more often than you can imagine.

If in was reporting everyone that i know share account, more than 75% of the people i know would be ban. All i see constantly it's people saying ''sec i'll log my friend char to buff us / sec i,ll log my hubby char to open the TT / sec i'll take my friend cleric since we don't find one'' seriously look like people don't care at all to share account and are not scare to say it.

**** accounts are pretty funny, as in it's extremely unlikely you'll get ****. In all my years of gaming I got **** once and that was my mistake because I picked up a keylogger. With that said, far as pwi goes, I don't trust the company behind it enough to the point I can share my account with a friend with a high certainty that I'll never be ****. If you have an account you care about, keep it to yourself or don't whine when you get **** and have no right to retrieve the lost items because you violated the terms of use.

Oh it was a joke cause ive let many people use my account and I got my stuff taken that one time lol.

Profesional hackers don't bother with games like this.
If you have a 'super duper **** program' that can gues both the pasword AND the login name, you'd be using it on someone's bank acount.

Besides, it makes no sense to threaten 'give me money or I'll take your money'.
If he could take everything, why would he ask you to give him a part of it?

I personally go by "unless I can walk over to you and smack you if you steal my stuff", no info for you. Not a single person besides me got my info. lol

But yea, I've seen it happen lots too. Just makes me facepaw. Don't come crying you lost stuff if you gave your info to someone. lol

    This.

There's really only 2 ways a normal dude can **** your account if you have NEVER revealed your pw to anyone. The most obvious is when you install malicious programs without checking to see if they're legit. Even then if you have a decent firewall (like, not windows firewall) you should still be safe.

The other is if you make a dumb password, that contains words that can be found in the dictionary, or names. Like Ilovepie76.

Well ty everyone for your replies. I do realise it was an attempt at a scam but for a person new to gaming or with limited knoweledge of computers and they way programs work it could be very disconcerting to have something like this happen. To have someone whisper you with what appears to be an exact copy of your name and demand money may have a different effect on the uninitated. Also it seems no-one else has heard of this happening to anyone else. But ty all for the replies.

While I agree 100% of those who have shared or done something to get their account ****; there was in fact a faction website that did have the moderator's contact the leader and iform them that a "key-logger" virus had been uploaded on that site during that time when several people did have problems.....

Do you mean I risk getting **** with my PieOverPretzel password? *gotta change that*

There's a third way of getting ****, which is what happened to me. You share your PC with someone stupid enough to get that malicious software for you. Happened to me. :/

if he can get your ip and keylog your computer it's possible, but unlikely through a game like pw
