so i have always wondered this and never really got around to asking it on the forums... but im at work and im board now soooo...

i see some ppl adding DOT or wood, metal, water, ect... shards to their dags and not putting garnets on... what advantage does that give you vs the bonus with putting garnets on ur weapon? why would u use a slot for a DOT when you can add that to ur armor and get more DD with a garnet shard? thanks

I did a post on this a while ago. A DoT in your weapon is about the same as an average garnet (grade 6). A G11 garnet offers much more dd. So 18m DoT vs 20k average garnet... some people are just idiots.

I've heard of people saying they want the +1 attack levels to cancel out their opponents def levels in pvp. I haven't done the math on this but I'm pretty sure garnet is still better as it offers more than 1% dd gain.

People sometimes use magic shards so their stuns will go through phys immune players. Like psychic skills or people using expel. Its a good strategy for the moment it works, but the rest of the time its a loss of dd and there is always the use of condensed thorn in that situation instead.
Seven 100+ characters leveled the hard way. Free to play. Mystic, Psychic, and Wizard left to level. b:victory

sweet thanks... this is kinda what i thought about the DoT on the weapon so ty for clearing that up...

and i would rather have the overall extra DD of a garnet... and i need to get the condensed thorn skill... i have been putting that off for a while now...

Get it, you won't regret it. Had a couple of BM's QQ about it when they use Phys marrow and I pop them with C. Thorn. b:chuckle

I use magic gems in my axes, so i can stun, hf phy immune things. Not the best dd around, but so much fun seeing the numbers show up rather than immune/miss. No idea for pvp side on the use of magic gems.

I did see a drop in my dd when i put in an incomparable ruby shard vs flawless. Before i kept agro, now my friend does. 25 in garnet goes further than the 100 fire i get.

I run deltas, and these gems stack up, so i put them in my minor weapons like sword, pole, claws, axes and see what happens.

You would do this if you wanted an open invitation for people to PM you and tell you what a waste of coin it was to shard with a DoT. That's about all I can think of.

Attack from Garnets adds to your Weapon Attack, while elemental damage does not seem to do so.

    Since your damage range equals:
(average weapon damage range + damage from garnets + damage from rings + level) * (DEX / 150)

Your real gain from garnets would be (Dex/150) * shard bonus.

So for an assassin with 600 DEX a garnet Gem would add 4 * 75 = 300 to their damage range. Minus physical resistance would be your added damage on normal attacks.

Elemental shards on the other hand add their stated damage as raw elemental damage, so a high grade elemental shard could actually add more damage against targets with a much higher p.def than they have m.def (e.g. barbs). With the added bonus of applying status effects through physical immunity, as was posted before.

DoT's in a weapon are just stupid.

Don't forget that because garnets add to weapon damage, they're also further boosted by buffs, sparks, and damage mods in skills. Plus a garnet + elemental buff *coughcondensedthorncough* gets a greater return than an elemental shard with the same buff.

DoTs in weapon are just a way to be incredibly stupid and waste your coin.
