Trade off about 3k pdef and about 1.2k HP for an extra 20 attack levels and an extra 15 defense levels.
And if you're really worried about p.def you can always 2nd stage neck or go for a sky cover ring.
But imo 15 def levels + 20 attack levels > 3k pdef + 1.2k HP.

As for your shards, it's personal preference. If you feel that you are a fairly good kiter and you can utilize your defensive genie skills/apoth well enough, go DoTs. Same price as Cit gems on HT.
If you really want the HP go cit gems but cit gems will rarely really save you, even full cit gems adds less than 2k HP on to your max HP I believe.
Especially out west you should know with the amount of full R9 zerking HA folks out there and archers that extra 2k really won't do you much good in most cases.

There's always cit gems/garnet gems for a balanced defense or full Jades for optimal defense but then again, I doubt you have a car around you can sell to get full jades so that's out of the question xd

But yeah, as for gear I honestly would have no idea why you would get some of the R8 recast pieces over the S3 nirv, the def/attack levels on the s3 make up for any stats/bonuses on the R8 recast and could probably get all your s3 nirv for the cost of getting 1 R8r piece and rolling it's stats till you're happy.

edit: wow i just noticed we use the same weapon but there is a huge gap in magic attack (im at 17043-18959)
get a better tome too
one with more statpoints

Forget defense, you can upgrade all your armor to +10 and you'll still be 1-shot to R9's. Just get a +12 tranquility and spend the money you would have spent on armors for Ironguards instead. Should get you like, 2000 ironguards.

when was the first rank8 sale? that top is exactly that old xd

first i only used that top for nien-event and put a dot in it since they were cheap anyway
(i used a first-cast nirvana +7 back then)

but later i thought i like channeling more and refined my rank8 top... a bit..

mainly because
people didnt know how great jades are
back then armor refines were not +10 average as its now
so dot builds kinda sucked

highly refined assasins driven DoT price up since they thrive for more damage
i had to buy the DoTs for my assasin armor for 14 mil each

people took some time till they realized that Josd is the best shard
when it was hyped on forums in every built the price exploded
