How to get ip banned?

A friend of mine (not me!) wants to know how to get an ip ban. Do GMs ever ip ban people for minor/serious violations of the rules?

I tried searching the forums for information about ip bans, but I might have done it wrong X3.

And when someone has a super .ini edited character, does just that character or the whole account get banned?

I believe Frankie just recently addressed this. If I remember correctly, you have the option to change the character to normal or the character is banned. As for IP bans, that wouldn't be possible in all situations.

If you'd like to be IP banned make a bunch of topics saying "F U (staffnamehere)" repeatedly until your account is banned. Then do so with a new account. Repeat until you get IP banned.

Selling your account for RL money can also get you a permanent IP ban.

In the case of the proxy, it's usually just a temporary ban, and technically it's not even your IP that's getting banned, it's the IP of the proxy you're going through.

Account selling can get a permanent ban, unless you're someone like Wizzeled that spends hundreds of dollars a day, then it's only temporary.

In many countries IP banns wouldn't work anymore. Because almost all providers give you dynamic IP adresses nowadays. I'm sure pwe prefers to just bann your account. Even if you have a static IP address and get an IP bann you could just switch your provider to play the game again...

95% of people have dynamic IP's Typically it will not change. I've had the same IP address for two years now and it's dynamic. It only really changes if you change ISP's. even changing your hardware doesn't usually change your IP, and simply rebooting your modem definitely doesn't.

This is what we call a statically assigned dynamic IP. Not all providers do this. Most common large providers will cycle the IP when the modem is rebooted. Or will have an IP lease period of xxx time before the IP is forcibly reassigned. So this cannot be counted on.

It's easier on the provider to dynamically assign a static IP then to deal with the support calls on manually configuring a static IP address. (sorry the above poster was me, not sure why it didn't post with the correct avatar).

IP bans are not an efficient method these days where some people have multiple connections (cellular, wired and WiFi hotspots). Most services have taken this into consideration and ban the account and sometimes as far as the name/address and cc history used on the previously banned account.

Small or big it's a 34 years ban (unless you change it), but i don't know if it's just the char or the whole account.

some use cable modems which doesn't change ip address when you restart it and not everyone uses a router

PWI's Terms of Service are very vague as to what is a banable offense and what the resulting 'punishments' are. However, GMs may ban anybody for any reason whatsoever, without notice. So whether or not you get IP banned really depends more on the judgement of the GM than on anything else. Most likely you won't even get noticed since GMs are barely ever present ingame.

    As for the .ini edits:
    1) for .ini edits, the character is banned until they ticket in, at which point they are given a choice between either agreeing to use a Makeover Scroll to go back to within what is possible in-game, or they can move all items to a different character before being re-banned for good.

Handle with care, though. PWE has failed to keep promises in the past, instead altering their judgement in retrospect. They might some day decide that .ini edits should have been permabanned no matter what, and (re-) ban anybody who ever had them, permanently.
