I received a quest to kill direwolves.

These seem to be in a pack of 5 - attack one and they all swarm and attack me. Even with a pet tanking (playing venomancer), the pet and I die too quickly.

Is there a secret to dealing with this? Do I need to get someone to tank?

    expect to be flamed

one of the traditional veno roles is luring; that is, getting only one mob from a group of mobs to attack you.

to do that, you hit it with your pet (only your pet!) and then unsummon the pet.
only the mob that the pet attacked will come to you (and ofc you can summon your pet back and proceed as usual). be careful though, you should not have bramble on the pet (or any other reflecting buff) cause if you do you will aggro all the mobs.

if i'm not mistaken, if the pets dies the mob will be lured.

also, i think that you can lure mobs by trying to tame them.

another way to lure a mob is using the skill earthflame (starter zeal skill).
again, be careful to be out of the aggro range of the other mobs and dont have any reflective skills on you (bramble, soul of vengeance).

note that i never played veno so i might have missed something
    you only purge once #yopo

As a veno, I would say that this advice is true. Also you can find more info here: http://pwi-wiki.perfectworld.com/index.php/Venomancer_Luring

    ok, I'll try that.

    I have tried:

Sending pet to attack one wolf (all of them attacked the pet)

Using distance mage attack on one direwolf and having pet on defend only

In every case, the whole pack of wolves attacked me and pet.

    I have tried:

Sending pet to attack one wolf (all of them attacked the pet)

When you send your pet to attack, the whole group will attack your pet. What you need to do is allow your pet to hit one (Only one!) and then immediately unsummon your pet (as in, put him back in your bag). Your venomancer should not heal your pet during that time, or attack any of the wolves or you will pull all of them. Also, if your pet dies before you can unsummon it, you will pull all of them.

By unsummoning your pet, the one wolf with agro (the one your pet hit) will run at you. Run a few steps further back, so you're out of range of the other wolves in case they walk too close to you, and summon your pet again (or if you started far enough back, just summon your pet). Get your pet attacking quickly, so it can retake the agro.
Using distance mage attack on one direwolf and having pet on defend only
Yes, don't do that. By attacking one of a hostile group (if they attack you just for walking by, they're hostile), you will draw agro from all within range. Also, healing your pet will gain you agro, so be careful when you heal your pet. It may be better to let your pet die than to draw the agro of a whole group.

Also, if I remember right, Dire Wolves are quite strong for their level. You may need to leave it for a few levels, then go back and try again. As a veno, you should be fine once you've got luring down, but a new weapon and some better armor always helps too.
