Shards for End Gear?!

If price is eventually an issue:Citrine Gems

Just kidding, use Mana gems, sins run out of mana fast so make sure you have much mana so you can spam skills and aps because attacking takes mana.

id go jades, but diamond of tigers are quite good if you dont care about price because you can always refine +11 your gear for decent hp

Why compare the price of a DoT to a Garnet Gem when the Garnet gem does 3 times more damage. You should be comparing the price of a DoT to something that does similar damage like a Flawless Garnet.

A DoT in a weapon isn't for poor people, it's for stupid people.

In reply to that last comment, I didn't get my gear by being wasteful with coins. I'm really pretty cheap and fully leverage gold prices and sales. Most of my stuff only got crazy expensive after I already had it because I try to stay ahead of the curve.

When it comes to endgame shards it's not really what you need, but more of what you want. XD

If you want more DPS so you can heal even better and you have the refines to take the damage, then DoT's the way to go.

If you want a **** load of hp and overall higher physical/magical defense then i'd opt for you to use vit stones. XD (Best option for PvE gear, IMO)

Finally if you want to take less damage you can shard JoSD.

I've always heard the conventional wisdom that garnet gems are better than DoT but have never understood it. Tell me where I've gone wrong.

(using round, hypothetical numbers because I'm lazy)

Say my Physical attack is about 20k. Say my pathetic archer aps = 1.0.
If I add a garnet gem to it, I do 20,075 damage per second (other modifiers not included).
If I add a DoT it's 20,200 per second.

Regardless of the defense that the target has, my output is better with DoT.

Assuming that's correct, I DO see where higher aps / lower physical attack players would do better with garnet.

What am I missing?

What you're missing is this: Physical Attack is multiplied by various factors, mostly your Dexterity and your Bow Mastery.

Say you have 20,000 patk with 450 Dexterity and you get 75% from your mastery. What this means is that your base damage is actually:
20,000 / 4.75 = 4,210

Now, adding a Garnet Gem to that will make it 4,285 * 4.75 = 20,353, whereas adding a single DoT would make it 20,000 * 1.01 = 20,200.

As for where I got the number 4.75, it's just 1 + Dex/150 + 0.75, where the 0.75 represents the aforementioned Bow Mastery.

Also, DoTs are further downed by use of further Attack Levels, most obviously Rank 9 and Jones' Blessing.

Say you had 20,000 attack and 30 Attack Levels. Now, your actual damage would be 26,000. Add a Garnet Gem and you'd be at 26,459. If you instead added a DoT, you'd be at 26,200.
