I've been on the fence about this..for..years actually but I thought i'd give it ago since I haven't seen anything built *quite* like me on the forums. I don't intend for this to get stickied, or any such but I thought I'd give it ago and express a little more in depth about one of the less. remembered and well known barb builds.

FREIZER LEVEL 100

At level 100 I have the following stats:

183 vit
278 strg
51 dex
3 magic

with gear:
257 vit
299 strg
61 dex
3 mag

standing up:
15'672 hp
On fours:
20'149

Pdef (tiger) no buff: 15'600 (about 22k buffed)
Mdef (no buff): 4k

My gear is as follows:

Most of it is just standard NV gear. +5 with perfect Cit. (NV first cast)

I was dumb and hit the submit button instead of preview so I shall continue this here.

Most of my gear is pretty standard +5 first cast NV with perfect Cit, and obviously a helm of warsoul. The pieces that I would like to bring to your attention are the following:

    http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/560486_3484963998960_1117180842_33362661_161715562_n.jpg

as well as my demon slaughter belt.

This is at heart what makes my build different, the quest for vit and HP in whatever gear I can get and ideally I would have liked to have ended up with all magic orn, even the cape. Having that extra bit of Mdef without going over board saves your *** more than you would think, and I would advise any barb to get as much magic defense as they can without sacrificing their armor. (Don't get me started on evasion belts and neck)

That's enough about gear, lets take a look at how I play:

Defense, Defense, Defense, Defense. I cannot stress this enough I get flack for pvping almost exclusively in tiger form, but it's saved my *** countless times. I hit for practically nothing, but that's not the key here. The key is to take their damage long enough that you can kill them, no matter how weak/strong you are and no matter how strong/weak they are and that mentality has served me pretty well in various Twars, and PVP situations.

So what does it mean to play defensively? well it means having beastial rage on as constantly as you can manage so that you can use their chi to get Invoke The Spirit and Sunder as often as your cool downs will let you. It means using your sage spark to restore your hp, rather than with the intent to kill. I'm mostly a charmless pvper, so genie skills like TOP and Solid Shield are my fall backs if I need to heal quickly.
Well this is kindof a little look into how I play and how i've been built. if there's any interest or questions I'd be more than happy to elaborate in comments

    Thanks

I have most of the gears anyway with the exception of NV top, leggings, wrist axe and OHT boots. Getting G15 jungle for my wiz anyway. I'm going to see how well my barb will field in PvP

That's a really well geared barb and i'm sure you'll do more than fine in pvp : ). I was just making an attempt to show it's not so hard to get to a pretty decent point without having to have high refines and jaw dropping gear.

All that gear is done, with the mods listed. Working on +10 axes since I just made them a couple days ago. Double CV rings to cover the MDef gimp, working on 114 MDef on both for engraving mods.

As much of a massive build hole as MDef is for a barb it's not worth sacrificing HP mods to get, since hp double stacks buff benefits.

    Example: My 350 hp mod on axes, (350 x .35) + (350 x .05) + (350 x .30) + 350 = 595hp

For a caster rocking 20k MAttack, not accounting skill dmg, 67% reduction for my current gear - 20 000 x .33 = 6600 damage, to match the bonus of a ~600 HP growth (350 base value) you would need a bonus 10% Magic reduction which is a net total of almost 5k MDef.

    Actual MDef req Value: 5147

Assuming you can account for MDef buff you need a minimum base increase to your MDef equal to: ~3200.

While building your MDef where available is always good, you have to be careful what you're sacrificing to get it.

While I agree with most of the post the math here is wrong.

    595hp out of 6600 is about 1/11 or 9%.

Reducing 9% more magic attack would actually only be about 600 mdef, not 5k. Using the buffed example you have you are already at 67% damage reduction meaning the damage you are taking is only 33% of the total amount. To increase that number 9% you'd be aiming for about 3% more mdef reduction, for a total of 70% reduction (taking 30% damage) which you reach around 9.2k mdef.

You are using a fully buffed build so you reach 9.2k with about 600 more mdef. If you didn't have cleric buffs the answer would be different. Your numbers were off (5k mdef vs 600 mdef) but your conclusion is right that the hp is still the better way to go as it helps you against both physical assaults and magic attacks. Even against wizards dropping things like bids physical becomes very useful and archers tend to be about 70% physical attack and 30% magical.

I think mine only had 15k at 97, standing, so you're on the right track.
