while the chance of getting the tome doesnt increase if you have opened any amount of packs, if you open X packs the chance of you getting a tome is higher. Ofc, jabq's calculations are wrong and it's simple to see that: if we did that for 1041 days we would get, according to his formula, 100% chance to get the tome, something that's obviously wrong.

Anyway, the correct way to calculate it is:
each chest has P chance to "contain" a tome, so 1-P chance not to
since the outcome of each chest is independed to the outcome of the previous chests, the chance to open N chests and not get a tome is:
(1-P)^N
so the chance to get a tome is:
1 - (1-P)^N

in our case, P = 0.000005 and N = 24x8x100 = 19200
so the chance is 0.0915 = 9,15%
just slightly worse? indeed, but at 1041 days, instead of the 100% we get "just" 63.19%

now, remember, that's with 24*8 = 192 chars (and the lvl req is what, 30-40?). assuming a "normal" number of chars, lets say 8, the chance of getting the tome in 100 days is ~0.4%

at this point, i'm sure that everyone has realized that i'm really bored and prefer to do these calculations instead of doing my homework so i'll continue for a bit more.

in order to get a 50% chance to get the tome you will need ~139,000 "chardays". assuming that you are willing to wait for 100 days this would require 1,390 chars. lets assume that you can level up a char to the required level (hyper FC runs) with 5 hypers = 400k, then the cost would be 556m (plus the time required to do the runs (lets assume that you wont have to pay a sin)

now, if only someone could provide the number of average logins per day of chars >40....
