How Serious are Weddings

I've seen a lot of people getting married of late. I wondered how serious these marriages were and found out that they could be real. It would seem that the Elder Matchmaker, who actually performs the marriage in W. Arch is, in real life, a real minister.

Actual copy of ULC docuement

It seems that the non-denominational church is a real life legal church and its ministers conduct real life weddings. I wonder how this effects the current weddings ?

Lol, i guess everyone's signing a pre-nup from now on or else you might have your r9 gone in the divorce >.>

But seriously, some people make weddings so serious, i'd rather save my 30 bucks and put it towards a real life wedding. :3

I saw this on Conan O'Brien when he got certify to wed couples and performed a legal same sex marriage in New York.

What amazes me is that you can get a certificate like that so easily. lol

As for the in-game weddings, in all honestly, I've never viewed them to be serious. I'm just not the type of guy to get married in an MMO.

If a ship's captian can marry you & it's legal, does the NPC Elder Matchmaker, now that he's legally ordained, make it legal ? It's one thing to be married in a MMO by just a character; but, he's actually a real minister now.

As to the lack of music, most JP marriage ceremonies don't have music and they're legal. And, you are married by him 1st on W. Arch street. The ceremony in the chapel is just a fancier redoing of the original wedding vows from the Elder Matchmaker.

Technically while I am dubious about whether a screen shot can be taken as proof that a digital character in a video game actually has ordination through a very questionable church (legally speaking). It also depends on whether a court would actually recognize a wedding between two individuals who met in a video game, got their characters wedded in a video game and for some reason felt that that obligated them to be legally married in the real world.

Further complicating matters is whether this would create potentially legally binding marriages between minors and adults considering the fact that you can never be certain how old the person you are getting married to in a video game actually happens to be.

Ultimately ordaining an in game marriage service within the confines of real world legal systems is dangerous to say the least if you ask me. And it sets a precedent that is problematic at best.

can we um... be absolutely certain of your statement on this matter? I seem to recall a recent incident where you or another Moderator said without a doubt that something was the case when within a day or two a GM posted contradicting the Moderator in question on that matter.

In otherwords I think we should hold out judgment on this issue until a GM has posted saying whether or not this is actually true.

Also, I suppose it might be worth noting, that Perfect World cannot hold a copyright or trademark on either of the terms "Eldest" or "Matchmaker" and even putting them in the phrase "Eldest Matchmaker" together I don't think Perfect World can hold a trademark on them due to the gross general nature of the terms. Thus I don't think you can accuse some non-related entity of Identity theft if this in fact is unrelated to the game. I mean just ask Wizards of the Coast who tried to originally get a trademark on the word "Magic" and ultimately had to get a trademark on the phrase "Magic: the Gathering" instead due to the fact that "Magic" is such a broad and encompassing term.

bear in mind if it turns out that it is in fact this game's in game marriage service that has become legally ordained to perform marriages. Then that means each and every single in game marriage from now on, is a legally binding contract that can only be cancelled via Divorce Court. So yes, this is a serious matter. That is why I am taking this very very seriously. And it is also why I am wanting to hear from a GM on this issue as soon as is reasonably possible.

Now a days, Marriage Quests have absolutely ruined PWI weddings IMO. XD It used to be that all you got was their name above your head, and seeing two people married in the game was rare, and kinda special. The weddings are still fun, of course, but I have known people that actually got married irl and then married their characters together afterwards XD

I however, will probably not ever marry in this game. <_< It's simply not in the game's mechanics for me to marry the person I want, and I don't just want the pixels. =P Oh well.

First of all, that was back at the beginning of the Secret Passage fiasco. I was merely relaying the position I had been given by frankieraye (that the change to make all PK free inside was unintentional), not stating my own personal opinion. It later turned out that it was intentional, and frankieraye informed the community of the change. In no way was I incorrect; rather, I was misinformed.

Actually believe it or not I was referring to something much more recent. Specifically the mass of spam emails from the customer service system that is apparently currently under revamps. One of the Moderators (I can't remember which, might have been you, might not) said that these messages were without a doubt from some sort of scam site. However about a day or two later a GM came public and clarified the matter stating that they were in fact legitimate emails from PWE despite the fact that they looked suspicious.

Ah yes, that was because none of the moderators could get in contact with frankie, due to him being away (not on vaction, just... away in the sense of not available).

well for starters as much of a joke this thread is I cant help but comment on this.

For one I dont know how marriage works in other countries, but in the US, having an ordained minister/priest/pope speak words, and say you are married is no legal binding contract other than with god itself. If it were to ever go to court the judge would laugh at whoever brought it there with out any proper legal documents.

Second, its a video game dude? really? come on, do you have even an ounce of common sense? If it were to ever go to court that some act in a video game set a precedent to become real life standards, whats to stop some kid with deep pockets grabbin robert shapiro and sueing some random person from pking his character in secret passage cause he couldnt get his quests done...

They gotta be brothers, as I searched ULC for "Eldest" and W. Arch office and found this guy with a home address of 1001 East Hillsdale Blvd, Suite 800, Foster City, Ca. 94404.

    Eldest MatchMaker cert

As to the Nay Sayers, cohabitate with someone for 60~ 90 days in most states and you are concidered common law married and need a divorce, even without a marriage certificate.
