Minimum Mana To Maintain Vortex with Charm

How to Keep Vortex going Continuously With Only an MP Charm
I have come across newer Seekers who don't understand why they can't keep Yataghan Vortex going even with an MP Charm and MP regen buffs. So here is a mini-guide for those interested.
Most players simply wait till Level 75 when they can use the Herb Yuanxiao MP pot, but there are many benefits to being able to use an MP Charm if you can afford it, pre and post level 75.
Thanks to Asterelle and Hazumi_Chan we have the amount of mana pool required to handle continuous 'AFK' Vortexing with an MP charm. Original thread where this was discussed.
The chart as calculated by Hazumi_Chan with Asterelle's formula is as follows:
1735MP - lvl 1 vortex
1823MP - lvl 2 vortex
1911MP - lvl 3 vortex
2000MP - lvl 4 vortex
2088MP - lvl 5 vortex
2176MP - lvl 6 vortex
2264MP - lvl 7 vortex
2352MP - lvl 8 vortex
2441MP - lvl 9 vortex
2529MP - lvl 10 vortex
2610MP - lvl 11 vortex(sage/demon)
(note: my experience is that these numbers are slightly too high, example: I have 2364 MP and can easily maintain a level 9 Vortex.)
These numbers are for continuous Vortexing without any MP regen buffs or Pots, on an MP charm only. If you have an MP regen buff and/or are using Mana Pots, the mana pool you can get away with will be lower.
Note: Once Vortex is started, player made Apothecary pots cannot be clicked - so activate them before Vortexing. Only the level 75 MP Herb Yuanxiao and the rare Level 25 Sesame Yuanxiao (no longer available), can be activated during Vortex. The NPC sold Blue MP Pots can be activated but have too little MP replenishment and too long a cooldown for them to be able to sustain even level 1 Vortex. Also, they share cooldown with the Herb.
How To Get More MP
It is NOT recommended that you get the extra mana pool by adding points into Mag. Doing this will gimp Str, Dex and Vit, which are more essential.
The easiest method to get a bigger mana pool is to get a multi-socket Arcane Hat. They have +mana as its primary stat; find one with extra +mana stats. They are relatively cheap in the AH because most Arcane classes don't need extra mana. Then shard with Turquoise mana shards which are also usually fairly cheap. You can easily get close to +1K extra mana with this method.
If you are still short of mana after this, add a +mana shard to your Cloak or look for equipment that has +mana or +mag stats. If you do this carefully you won't significantly gimp your Def or HP. You can also swap out the Mana+ gear for HP+ or Def+ gear when you are not Vortexing.
If you can find the +mana gear and can afford the MP Charm, it can be a very fun/convenient way to play a Seeker.
Pros:
- You can start Vortexing continuously from lvl 59. Amaze your fellow pre- lvl 75 Seekers who can't keep it up!
- You can keep it going without Herbs or if you forget to religiously watch your mana bar and click on the Herb.
- In complicated situations, such as when you are soloing PV and have 20+ mob swarming you while you pull and start Vortex, you don't have to worry about running out of mana.
- Easy duo or multi-client zhenning. Set up your Seeker in Vortex with BP activate Hyper, then switch to your Alt and pull into the Vortex. This is a far easier way to zhenn than the old Cleric+Wiz/Archer method
- Ability to go AFK for a bit (not recommended unless you just have to run to the bathroom). Some mobs can interrupt while you are AFK.
Cons:
- High Mana cost. Vortexing is between 2 to 4 times (depending on Vortex level) more mana costly than say the Cleric BB.
- You have to give up a little Def or HP in your equipment in order to get the extra mana stats.
How much does it really cost?
At level 9, Vortex uses 272 mana per second or in a long Boss fight of say 60 seconds it uses 16,320 MP. Compared with Cleric BB which is 100 mana per second.
Not really as bad as you may have thought, this actually surprised me when I calculated it out.
A Plat MP charm could last 110 minutes of continuous Vortexing at a lvl 9 Vortex. Longer if you supplement with MP Pots or a Cleric MP regen buff. Since most Vortex sessions are less than a minute that is quite a few boss fights on one MP charm.
In terms of actual coin. If we take a Plat MP Charm to cost 1.8 Mill for 1.8Mil MP, (approx cost on HT server), that makes 5K MP=5K coin. By comparison the Herb Yuanxiao goes for about 0.8K coin for 5K MP. However, it is not an exact comparison because the MP Charm uses only exactly the amount required. The MP pot on the other hand will be used up even if you are over filling the MP required; there is some wastage.
For approximate comparison, using the Herb is 1/5th the cost of the MP Charm. So whenever you can remember, click on the Herb while Vortexing.
Note: this is NOT a recommendation for Seekers to focus only on Vortex. Seekers should learn how to use other skills, a Seeker that relies mostly on Vortex will tend to be Fail as there are many situations where it isn't very useful.
Corrections, suggestions welcomed.

Once Vortex is started, normal MP pots and player made pots cannot be clicked. Only the level 75 MP Herb Yuanxiao and the rare Level 25 Sesame Yuanxiao (no longer available except from players who hoarded it from a couple of years ago), can be activated.
Part of that is wrong. Normal MP pots can be used during vortex (or any other continuous channel skill, i.e., BB, RB, DB and BoA) but are insufficient to keep vortex up. Apothecary items of any type can not be activated during vortex (or other continuous channel skill.)[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

The normal potions you can buy from the npc and get as mob drops can be used during vortex. The potions you can get from the divine orders from the npc can also be activated during vortex.
The apothecary items you have to manufacture however don't work while vortex is running.
And thanks for crediting me b:mischievous[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -

b:shocked b:surrender Ok, my bad if that is true. I'll correct it. I think I must have avoided using the NPC MP pots so long ago due to weak mana replenishment and long cooldown, that I forgot.
And you are welcome to the credit b:pleased.
Do you happen to know what the correct number for level 8 Vortex is?0 -
I'd guess it's 2352 as that fits neatly between the figures for level 7 and 9 vortex, and involves a simple typo swap of the first two characters by the original poster.
NPC blue pots share cooldown with herb yuanxiao. Pink NPC pots can also be used in vortex and have a separate, longer (1 minute?) cooldown. Player made apoths have yet another separate, long cooldown (shared with such things as the pills and poultices from maiden chests, and chrono fragments from past maps) and can not be used during vortex, but using such things as concentrate orb just before putting up vortex can ease the load on a charm (and let you hold vortex with a lower mana pool.)[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Good catch, I'll fix the typo on lvl 8 now.
Yeah, I remember the sharing of cooldown which causes problems when you 'have' to click on the Herb pot. Also, I probably should discuss the fact you can activate Apoths like Focus Powder 50MP/sec over 10 mins BEFORE you activate Vortex.
The problem with relying on any of these is unless they are used consistently, it is not possible to reliably predict if the Vortex will be stable. I prefer to have an adequate mana pool for the worst case and if I can save my charm burn with MP regen buffs and cheap Apos, all the better.
Thank for the suggestions.
I'll add these issues later, gotta go now. b:bye0 -
Ah yes, my bad, I indeed swapped around some numbers at lvl 8 vortex. ^^" Thanks for fixing that b:cute

YW and thanks for the 'stickied' plug. But I don't really care if it isn't, I've bookmarked it for my own reference. I added some additional info and reformatted it for better readability, hopefully some people find it useful. b:pleased0 -
Well, this is a usefull topic. A lot of people (including myself) wondered about this for a while. It would be handy to have this stickied for both players who want to check it again, or new players who would like to know.

gemini slash is the one that murders, not yataghan0 -
Thanks very much for the information guys .. it really helped alot0

this is fantastic info. i had gotten a free mp charm from the lucid quests and had it equipped the 1st time i vortexed i didnt know how to stop it just kept going. b:surprised i then learned about esc button. but thats besides the point.
at lv72 im a little behind on my vortex level its only lv3 because i concentrated on the other stats needed to solo/grind.
now that i can refer to this to see what is needed as i level up is great.
thanks for the info everyone.0 -
I have lvl 10 vortex and are charmed but hell all i do is pot the herb until mobs are deadb:laugh and it dont take long. This game is like washing hair with shampoo... Rinse and repeat if desired.
Proud owner of many mains.101 bm,101 seeker,101 demon sin,100 sage sin,101 archer,101 barb,100 cleric,100 wiz( first toon since sept 08 finally made it in 2013)newly added mystic 100 HA,72 psy.0 -
These numbers come from Asterelle's formula which assumes Vortex hits twice each 3 seconds and not once each 1.5 seconds.
As the OP mentions, these numbers seem too high based on experience. I wonder if the problem lies in the assumption that Vortex is hitting 2 each 3 seconds.AKA PermaSpark, Heartshatter0 -
Idk about sticky since its not xctly relevant to 100% of the seekers out there (dont hate me lol), since for nearly everyone its more practical to use mp food rather than an mp charm, and wat u actually trade off is wat? 1k hp, bout 500-600 phys res, for a backup in case u forget to click? again, as i said, dont hate i c how mp charm is an advantage but really the benefit is outweighed by cost b:thanksI crack myself up!! b:laugh b:chuckle b:pleased
