Windows 8 Error

No, that isn't a typo. I'm testing the Developer build of Windows 8 and figured I would see how PWI handles under it. That and I love bleeding edge =P

Anyway, install and everything ran smoothly, right up until I clicked Start...

Then I get this message...
pwi_message8078Mid.png
Click the image for the full-size version.

Anyhow, I have clicked Yes, and Clicked no...
Either way the client starts, but I haven't noticed any difference between them.
I'm kind of hoping that someone has seen this message before and can tell me what it says.

P.S. I'm currently running this in VirtualBox with 2GB of allocated memory. I have plans to add it to the long list of operating systems I multi-boot to, but haven't decided whether to clear a new partition, or to install one of my spare drives.
in any case, here's a copy of my DxDiag report.

My guess would be that it has to do with the experimental 3D support in VBox. You mention the Client starts, but does the game actually run and can you play it? Because I had similar issues on my Mac using Paralels and other Virtualization tools. I ended up using Wine, lmao, which sucked bigtime.

Anyway, I assume you updated VBox to latest version. I think it has to do with 3D support, but unfortunately I dun speak Chinese, nor do I write it xD

The same error message is produced under WINE when using graphics drivers it doesn't like. Lord knows what it actually says, but...

That said, you imply it works, whereas for me it would crash shortly after launching (choosing either option) - and the patcher would freeze when I clicked the "Graphics" box.

Judging by your completely generic graphics card, and VirtualBox's really rather terrible support of accelerated 3D, I imagine it's a graphical complaint.

The ambitious could attempt to reverse-engineer the garbage characters into their numeric values, then re-decode as UTF-16LE or GBK (the two encodings PW uses - though the latter is generally only used for filenames). I imagine this is possible, but leave it as an excercise for the reader.

yes, it is using the generic driver, and I do have the 3D support turned on and installed on the virtual machine. I'm currently re-imaging my laptop with Windows 8 now, the only trouble there is that HP stopped making Video driver updates with Vista, so I'll have to **** the latest driver files to get something decent. Using 177.13 when we're currently on 285.62 seems kinda silly.

For entertainment value, I did make a quick attempt. The title bar came out as "Shen kill mold pelvic cavity recorded media Lu Lu Lu Chan Shui", so that's less than useful. I can't be bothered to make further attempts. :p

By the way, the game won't produce that error on a normal Windows 8 install. I've been using it flawlessly (as expected). Still, don't expect anything tailored for it since you know... China's marriage to pirated XP versions and such.

Yes, it's running just fine on the lappy without any issues. I'm also seeing a nice improvement in performance compared to Win7.

at this point, I'm just hella curious about what that message says =P.

Yes that's nice, but how does it "look"? I kid, but is windows 8 something you would recommend looking in to? I read my share of stuff on it and it seems like it's good, but nothing "that" special. Lol.

Right now, no, it isn't that special. If I had it on a touchpad or tablet though, then yes, it would be awesome.

The interface right now is designed mostly towards the high-end tablet users. Unfortunately, I can't load it onto an Android. Looks like I know what my next piece of hardware is going to be though =)

For the standard PC user, the interface is a bit cumbersome, and common programs are a little difficult to find at times without the old start menu. I'm sure I can tweak this some more to make it more user-friendly, but I've only got about 4 hours into the OS so far.

You can start typing on the start screen to search for programs instantly. You can also pin them and arrange them to your liking. I just wish I could pin folders, shortcuts, and standalone EXEs myself...

    Example from 11 oct

Please send in a ticket to Tech Support with the following information so we can try to figure this out for you.

We have gotten some players with Win 8 already that we have been helping. b:victory

It'll be helpful to us if you tell us some of your computer's information, and include any screenshots of any bugs or errors that you get.

    1) What is the make and model number of your computer?

    2) Please also tell us whether you are running a 32bit or 64bit version of Windows. You can find out in Windows by going here: Start > Control Panel > System & Maintenance > System. Then look under System > System Type. It will then display 32bit Operating System or 64bit Operating System. Include that info with the info we ask for below.

    3) To create a dxdiag log, go to Start, click on Run, then type in dxdiag and press Enter. Click on Save All Information as a text file (on your Desktop as an example.
If you are using Vista or 7, go to the Start Menu, click on the Search menu and type dxdiag.exe.

    4) Attach the dxdiag.txt that you save to your reply to us.

If you have a 64bit system, please click on the 64bit Dxdiag/DirectX button to save the correct log file.

This is important so that we can do our best to help you.
Do you need help learning about patching the game, installing it, changing antivirus/firewall settings, changing network settings, learn how to use a computer, keeping your PC maintained and more?
