Why must people be so rude when it comes to trading?

I've seen many cases like these:

World chat: WTS [Giant Beast Footprint] 10M OBO

Your answer: 9mil for GBF

More likely than not, I receive either of these responses:

1) I got completely ignored, as if the offer is so epic noob that it doesnt even deserve an "nty"

2) "gtfo, 10m OBO means give offers higher than 10mil. Nab"

So, if u get response (1), and u think ur offer is valid, u'll try to PM the seller again. Later he told u to "gtfo, no response = nty"

Here's the question to all, since when does "no response = nty"?

No response could either mean:
1) Seller went afk after world chatting (quite common)
2) Seller is too busy to answer PM atm, could be because he's flooded with PM, or pk-ing or killing some mobs.
3) Seller is still thinking about your offer
4) Seller is waiting for better offer before responding to you
5) Many many other reasons

And because of this buyers have to wait like 2-3min thinking they might get a response. Is it THAT difficult to spend 0.5s to type "nty <Enter>"?

Sometimes u get response (2), which is epically lame. 10mil OBO means you will sell your item at "10mil" OR "best offer". No rational person would offer 11mil because at 10mil, he would have met your first criteria. If someone offer 9mil, and 9mil is the best offer, then it is still meeting your requirement right?

OBO sets the price ceiling, not the price floor. If you want offers better than 10mil, then put it this way "WTS GBF Start bid 10mil" or "WTS GBF PM offers above 10mil"

And most importantly, it isnt very nice to tell people to gtfo for a valid offer.

I get these nonsense quite often. Am I the only one, or is it PWI's culture to be like this?

Though it is their choice to sell it at whatever price they want. Generally i play mind tricks on them. I remember once i was buying a cube necklace for 100mil, the guy wanted 125mil. So i offered 100mil, then he said no i want 125mil, so i said ok ill take my money elsewhere. So i wc'd to buy a cube necklace for 100mil. Straight after that he pm'd me he was like ok 100mil. Just gotta know how to handle them. They're the ones desperate for money, you're the one that has the patience to wait till the item comes to you.

Figuring out the psychology of buyers/sellers has really helped me to succeed as a merchant, and my overall conclusion from years of effort in PWI has brought me to one basic trading principle:

    - People are greedy, and think they're special

No matter what price you offer, most people will scoff at it and try to make you feel stupid/ignorant/foolish/guilty/etc... about your offer.

The good news, though, is that it's not hard to just ignore them and find others who are willing to do business without all the pettiness. Usually by the time the person eventually finds somebody they're able to bully into accepting their offer, I've already done 2 or 3 more transactions with the money and earned enough profit to easily overcome the loss of just one sale.

There was a thread on a similar vein recently - someone complaining about receiving ROFL/LOL replies to their OBO offers. If I tender an offer to an OBO and the reply is along the lines of "ROFL/are you kidding?/it's worth more than that!" then I just reply "OK" or "OK..that's all it's worth to me" and leave it at that. If they want to be greedy and arrogant, just let them get on with it.

I think you've lost the game. Stop being so emotional and get rational.

When people trade, they're obviously looking for the best price they can get.

As for the OBO thing, there's two ways to interpret it. The first is that OBO is the "Buy It Now!" price, e.g. the ceiling. That is the interpretation a buyer will always have. However, for a seller, there is another way to interpret it: 10m is the starting price and they're asking for 10m or better. Almost always, the seller will have the latter attitude because they always want the maximize the profit they get, or to minimize the losses they'll make.

But really, I think you're taking it all way too seriously. If the seller does not respond to you because they think your offer is ****, then that's their problem. If you feel wronged because someone thought your offer was ****, please stop trading right now, because you're obviously way too idealistic to not figuratively kill yourself over it.
The good news, though, is that it's not hard to just ignore them and find others who are willing to do business without all the pettiness. This right here is so very golden. It's the very essence of why merchanting works: Because there are people who are willing to pay a higher rate for convenience. Interesting is also to notice that the people who are paying the higher rate end up achieving any goals they have quicker because they spend less time looking for the perfect rate that the others are searching for. That, also, is one of the key things to being a successful merchant.

Personally, I try to avoid buying from people on WC as much as I can.

There are no 2 ways to interpret O.B.O. it means or best offer (10m being the best they are looking for and the buy out) period. If they want to start a bid they can say 10m starting bid pm me.......

And that's the only way to look at it.

You're wrong, there is only one interpretation of OBO. It stands for "Or Best Offer".

for an explanation, since I am too wise to duplicate the fine effort put forth by Sarrafeline.

I've noticed this as well...It's just another one of the running stupidities in this game, I suppose. Like people putting rip-off prices on everything in catshops or people trying to convince a seller that their item isn't worth what they think it is, which happens just as often as people not knowing what "OBO" means. Which is why I never say it in world chat. I always just say that I'm taking offers (And deal with 9 million people PMing asking me how much.) and then wait for someone with a brain to make a good offer. I kind of wish there were a tag I could add on to the end of my world chats that say "If your offer is less than what catshops are offering to buy the item for, I will ignore you." but putting "iyoiltwcaotbtifiwiy" just seems silly. b:chuckle
