I grabbed the installation files from my partner's computer today so I could play with her and ran into problems with PWI Genesis on my Windows 7 machine. A quick search of the forums showed people were having issues with Genesis and the client "stopped working".

After much searching through these forms, and the thought of emailing support, even though most people seem to get no where with it, I decided to try and fix the issue.

I have a Windows 7 32bit system and the game wouldn't work, my partner had XP and it worked perfectly. This frustrated me. In my situation a simple fix within Windows did it.

This worked on a Windows 7 machine.

--- To run the SFC /SCANNOW command in Win 7 ---

STEP 1

1. Open the START MENU
2. Click on ALL PROGRAMS
3. Click on ACCESSORIES
4. Right click on COMMAND PROMPT and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR

STEP 2

5. in the COMMAND PROMPT type sfc /scannow
6. Press Enter

NOTE: This may take a bit of time to finish.

After a while it should get to 100%, if there are any errors it will try to correct them, if there is errors it can't fix I suggest you Google for more information.

After doing all that PWI Genesis opened perfectly and I'm playing it now.

I hope this helps some of you.

just a note, when you run SFC, be prepared for it to take a while, and you may need your Windows OS disk. This is basically the same as running a file verification on Windows. After it's done, you will want to reboot and then check for windows updates.

Also, I'm posting constantly that under Windows 7 and Vista, you need to set the three .exe files to run with administrator rights under the program compatibility settings.

    These files are....
    C:\Perfect World Entertainment\Perfect World International\patcher\patcher.exe
    C:\Perfect World Entertainment\Perfect World International\Launcher\Launcher.exe
    C:\Perfect World Entertainment\Perfect World International\element\elementclient.exe

Right-click on these, select Properties, click the "Compatibility tab, and check the box at the bottom where it says "Run this program as administrator".

Do not set them to run under any other version of windows, or set any other compatibility settings. (Unless you have an older system, then the "Disable visual themes" option might improve your FPS a bit.)

You need to have an administrator account. If you are on a limited account, then you are not able to do this.

I would also note, that the actual need to run SFC on Windows 7 is extremely rare. With Vista it was fairly common. In Windows 7 I would only recommend it as a last resort when you are having several system-wide issues with the OS. Because you are having trouble running a game is definitely not a valid reason to run SFC.

its an old thread, but someone might find this usefull... after installing PWI on my win 7 comp pwi would not update. after checking the patcher.exe i saw that for some reason when pwi installed the win98 compatibility mode was enabled on the patcher? i simply unchecked it and applied changes.. bingo, pwi now works for me.

Yes, If you're running Vista or newer, the only box that should ever be checked in Compatibility mode is the "Run as Administrator" option. (Although you could check "Disable Visual Themes" to turn Aero off and get a slight improvement in FPS.) Never select the option to have it run in compatibility mode for another windows OS. I've done loads of testing on this, and the results are never better. At best there is no change, but typically it decreases the performance of the client.

first ive heard of this issue. I've been running PWI on all flavors of windows XP and above, 32 and 64 bit alike. actually my current operating system is windows 7 x64 run as an 'upgrade' from XP Pro 32 bit. I turn off UAC and DEP on vista and above. whether that might have anything to do with what people are experiencing or not, I can't say honestly as those are the first things I do when i setup a vista or 7 machine.
