Sharding

Hi there. So im getting to the levels where sharding actually matters. Im level 72 now. Just curious as to why people usually shard with hp rather than phys res. I plan on having decent gear, which i believe i do for my level, and now i have to start some minor refining and sharding and am curious as to why this couple hundred hp matters so much. Thank you in advance to your replies.

With BP, crab meat and tripple sparking it is easy to self-heal but you still have to stay away from being two-shoted. So a minimum amount of HP's is important, I think most are saying to shoot for around 5k unbuffed at lvl 1000

Its usually my preference because phys res won't help you against a mag atk, where the extra hp will help you against either. You can mix it up if you want...there's no hard & fast rule.0 -
The more Physical/magical defence u have , the less % u receive from all the shards bonuses. If u have for example 5000k def and a 50% def res , 6000k will not get u to 60% but round to a 54% (the numbers are completely imagination , but hope i gave u the general idea).
On the other hand Hp is a constant guaranteed value. It helps with both types of dmg and all DoTs . The more u have , the more hits u can survive. At ur Lvl i would suggest Flawless Shards.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

In other words, what Phoenix_Eye is saying is that P def, as well as M def, has a large diminishing returns.
That means the higher defense you get, the less it will benefit you. For example, boosting your P def from 0 to 10k is extremely significant in terms of physical damage reduction, but boosting it from 10k to 20k wouldn't yield the same results.
Sharding citrines is more than enough for now. Once you get endgame, if you can shard Jade of Steady Defense into gear, that'd be more useful, because Defense levels act like percentages more than P def does.[SIGPIC]Octavia is best pony[/SIGPIC]

I don't really agree on the diminishing returns reason. On light armor you are on the low side to start with, meaning you actually get a lot of reduction from extra phys def. However, you are low on magic and physical defence, and hp covers both. Also, in practice, I noticed that you need a minimum of hp for defence to be really efficient and not to be a 1 shot.
I used garnet + citrines in my armor till lvl85 (when I got gold fcc ornaments that have a big phys def boost), but that required some higher refines cause I still needed to be able to take the mag att.0 -
Diminishing returns is both a fact and a myth of defense. For instance, say you have 8k pdef and 75% reduction. The first 8k pdef got you 75% reduction, but another 1k might only get you 2% reduction. Obvious diminishing returns, but look at it this way. You are taking only 25% damage, and that 2% decrease means you are taking only 23% damage.
23% reduction / 25% reduction = 8% less damage.
Although it takes more for each 1% increase in damage reduction the inverse becomes larger. For instance if you had 80% and went to 82%. It'd take even more pdef to get that 2% damage reduction but now that 2% is equal to 10% less damage.
I recommend split sharding garnets and citrines. The majority of damage you take (85%???) will be physical attacks, at least when you get into melee range. You'll need a good hp base for surviving initial attacks, maybe while you are rib striking or getting into range, but then you'll want the damage reduction of garnets because paint is your main heal and its obviously easier to heal less damage.
So citrines to build your hp pool a bit, the rest garnets. Once you get decent pdef ornies you can shard more citrines. Decent pdef ornies are the TT90 ornies you will use as souledges for tt99 pdef ornies. The ofc, your TT99 pdef ornies.Seven 100+ characters leveled the hard way. Free to play.
