Cheaper way to get shards??

So, I bought the lvl 1 shards and crafter some higher lvl shards to imbue to my lvl 5 gear. It was somewhat pricey, but i could afford it. Now I have level 8 gear with sockets and was doing the math...

I'd need 25,920 shabby shards to create 1 level 8 shard of the same type!! Multiply that by the 530 coins it costs per shabby shard and it will cost 13,737,600 coins to create ONE levl 8 shard!!!! That's rediculous! To create a single level 12 shard using shabby shards you would need 23,328,000 Shabby shards!! That's over 12BILLION coins.

IS THERE ANY CHEAPER WAY????????????????????????????????????????????????????
There must be a cheaper way.

If anyone is wondering how I did the math, I'll explain. It's 530 coins for a single lvl 1 shard. LvL2 shards require 3 LvL1 shards to create. LvL3 shards require 3 lvl2 shards to create. LvL4 shards require 3 lvl3 shards to create. (here the required amount of shards increases)LvL5 shards require 4 lvl 4 shards to create. LvL6 shards require 4 lvl5 to create. LvL7 shards require 4 lvl6 shards to create. (here's another increase) LvL8 shards require 5 lvl7 shards to create. LvL9 shards require 5 lvl8 shards to create. LvL10 shards require 5 lvl9 shards to create. (Another increase) LvL11 Shards require 6 lvl10 shards to create, and lvl12 shards require 6 lvl11 shards to create.

So, u just multiply each time, starting from lvl1 to get the amount of shards needed. Creating a lvl 5 shard would mean multiplying 3x3x3x3x4 (3 shards of the previous level up til lvl 4, then 4 of the lvl 4 shards for the 5th level). That's only 324 shards, costing 171,720 coins per shard. That's expensive but it get's impossible at higher levels. A level 12 shard would mean 3x3x3x3x4x4x4x5x5x5x6x6 of the lvl1 shards. Equating to over 23M shards and over 12Billion coins.

Can some one please tell me how to get shards for my higher level gear???

    yes, there are at least two cheaper ways that i know of.

    buy some tokens of luck from a catshop somewhere; take them to the "boutique manager" NPC. from her menu, select "gift exchange", then "luck". here you can get grade-7 garnets, citrines, and... uhh, what's the name of the mag attack/defense gem again... for a number of tokens that multiplies out to a good deal less coin.

    also check the auction house for gems, sometimes people sell high(ish) level ones relatively cheaply there.

    cheapest of all, don't bother getting the highest grade gems your armor could possibly use. grade-5 and 7 ones work fine until you get close to endgame. you might consider combining up a grade-8 or two for your weapon before then, but armors can do with less.

    no one combines from level 1 to the end

    generally, you can combine from level 1-5 or so, but the jewelcraftsman sells level 5 gems, so that sets the price for those

    then, you can exchange tokens of luck for flawless shards ( the most commenly used ones )

    since the tokens go for about 10k now, and you need 14 i believe for the shards ( lower for sapphire ) it will pretty much cap those at around 140-150k, regardless of what it would cost to combine them from level one

    A level 8 shard (Immaculate) should not cost anywhere near the price you mentioned, neither does a level 5 shard (Average).

    As you can see, 1-4 is simply 3^(G-1), 5-7 is 4^(G-4)*27, 8-10 is 5^(G-7)*1728 and 11-12 is 6^(G-10)*216000

    A level 5 shard costs 57,240 coins to make from shabbies.
    A level 8 shard costs 4,579,200 coins to make from shabbies.

    As others have already mentioned, you can make Flawless shards (level 7) by exchanging 14 Tokens of Luck at a PWI Boutique Agent. You need 5 Flawless to make an Immaculate, so assuming your server's token price is around 10,000 coins each (as it is on Sanctuary), to make a Flawless costs ~140,000; therefore an Immaculate would be ~700,000.

    If you can't find cheaper than that in AH or from catshops, get tokens to make them instead.
