there's a great sticky about this.
    best fly pet phoenix.
    next best petite sawfly

    best tank pet herc
    next best Glacial Walker

water suck. i used whatever till lvl 80 and got celestial plumpfish

the shadou cub is cute, but his pdef suck. u won't be soloing any TT's or tanking much bh's with him.

my advice sell the cub, or give to friend.
get a walker, teach him bash.
then u will eventually be tanking and soloing everything for you and your friends :D

Walkers are good pets indeed , but not the best , u better tame a ranged pet (eldergoth Marksman if u dont want to go with a bear). Walkers are too slow and magic hits (lots of bosses have magic attacks mixed with their normal attacks) kill him.

Also teaching him bash is not needed , icicle can do the job , if u go with Glacial , teach him threaten.

Icicle is the elemental form of bash it does water damage... if you really want more aggro holding skills I'd suggest adding flesh ream since it adds bleed damage over time walkers should already have roar. But that's just me.

Keep whatever pets you like the most, I have an Ostial Centiplex, not because its great at anything but because I like it, You're a veno and that gives you the freedom to have any pet you wish.

Now if ya want a tanking pet, the good ones are (in no order) Shadou cub, Glacial Walker, Crystaline Magmite, Armored Bear, and Herc (but its a cash pet and can do pretty much anything except keep agro w/o bramble)

Not correct. Most venos don't keep the inital skill pounce and replace with bash/flesh ream.
Herc holds agro pretty well even without reflect.

Hm, I'd get a glacial walker for tanking jobs.
Maybe another pet with good DD, like scorpion, dark wanderer.
Air and water pets.. I tamed something near the level I needed the quest til I got my phoenix lol

Of course you can just use a pet for the hell of it :p
That's the fun with venos: You get to choose your pets :D

    Wrong. Just... wrong. The shaodu cub and the armored bear both have good HP and defense. And why the hell would you even suggest to give a bad pet to a friend? >.>;

If you want some good pets that also look cute, you can check out my guide on rare pets for information. b:cute The guide includes the lvls, coordinations, images and growth charts of the pets. It also inclused tips and tricks to taming and general information about them.

The shadau is... not horribly weak. Its defence is decent. It gives up a bit of pdef compared to a magmite in exchange for a great lump of mdef.

Where it IS lacking is its attack, which is pretty weak.

As for herc keeping aggro: They are really REALLY freaking bad at it in the later levels.
I can out-aggro my herc (and yes, it has bash and reflect) just by attacking in foxform, using a magic-sword, no aps trickery or anything.

It's normal that the attack is lower. The shaodu cub and the herc are both tanking pets, not DDers. If you find your tanker's attack is too low, put Bash on it. At lvl 5, Bash will deal 200% of the pet's base physical damage. It also has a very quick cooldown of 8 seconds, which generates enough dps to hold agro. b:victory

This, but it's really the same for all tanking pets. Part of that has to do with the availability of gear when the pets were designed. The pet system is very well balanced with the world as it was when flawless shards and +4 refines were godly. But now +10 and gems are the norm and the old pet stats have been left in the dust. They still stand up to the bosses well enough, but compared to the massive increase in player firepower, no pet can keep aggro at endgame. The closer you get to endgame, to more you'll see this and it's up to you to learn how to meter your damage and know when to tank yourself, when to let your pet have aggro, and how to more efficiently use pet skills.

@ the OP: there are definite advantages to the Shaodu. It's small (easier for some to see around), cute (for those who don't like looking at rocks or buddhas), comes with Pounce (an extra stun that comes in handy when you're grinding), and has decent defenses.

It also has its disadvantages, mainly attack power and a slight decrease in p.def.

Personally, I like the Shaodu for grinding and the Walker/Herc for bosses, but I know some venos who used their Shaodu as primary tank and never had a problem with it. Also, look at what you are planning on doing before you say "yes" to one pet or another. Most pets are great at a few things but flail at others.

As long as you keep your pet skills up to date, I don't think the lower attack for the bear makes much of a difference in lower levels. Mid levels it may be a bit of a struggle, but you'll alraedy have a decent grasp on how to manage it. End-game levels, it's all out the door anyway.

Like Phoenix_Eye said, definitely go for an Eldergoth if you want a ranged/magic tank as well. They're the only practical magic tanks, imo.

+4 wraith conqueror (The TT90 channel sword) with flawless sapphire. And still out-aggroing my herc.

It aint gear, it's just that only having a single attack skill means no holding aggro against anything or anyone.

(And yeah, I can cope with it - just surprised the heck out of me)

Pounce is indeed a very very very good skill.

Sometimes I wish there was a Level 6 for pet skills. I out aggro my herc so much, it's irritating. I have to wait till it Bashes 3 times to be safe :[

too lazy to read it all so someone probably said but still,

petite sawfly and glacial walker best pets that are free.. at least compared to pheonix and hercules. i d say keep the shaodu in bank, it s a decent pet but dont in low lvls dont waste cage space for it. you ll learn about pheonix and herc as you play however, and probably get one or both after 70-80-90 depending on your money hoarding.

also another tip i wished someone had told me is, dont switch pets cuz you want to see something different. you ll need to lvl the pet and at higher lvls its really a pain..

on the subject of water pet, you can just tame a pet closer to your lvl until you get to 85. you wont need it much and it ll stay always low lvl cuz you dont have many quests in water. at 85 you can tame an asgard and be done with it..

about other pets and uses, if you have a lot of pet bag space, frog is good for mag defence, knowlin is really fast, works great to lure walker mobs in instances, i m not yet 100 but someone told me shaodu is good as glacial at 100, maybe better.

I didn't just mean gear, but level too. The pet system was great when people didn't get to 90 and most didn't even get to 80. The fact that pets seem to peak at 80 or so (skills at any rate, as mentioned by Lythianaa) is flawed, imo.

Although your point of using the Wraith Conqueror kinda goes with what I was saying. TT/molds are now the minimum norm.

If it were just a tank pet with a single skill that you can pull aggro off of, that's one thing. But a level 65 sin pulling aggro from a level 100 herc? Me pulling off my scorpion and wanderer (both level 100) while firing multiple pet attack skills to maximize their dps?

Option 1: Tame it yourself. Level a veno to level 7 and do the cultivation quests - that'll teach you how.

Option 2: Buy pet eggs from others. Take the egg to a pet trainer to hatch it.

Option 3: Use cash shop materials to get a herc/nix ticket. Turn the ticket into an egg. See option 2.

My veno got 81 doing only quests. Only quests, no BH, no CS, nothing. Except cultivation quests.

What got me through 1-60 was Crystalline Magmite north of Etherblade. LOL. Its not the best but hey, I got through everything. And I've met some awesome venos who use it still. Glacial walkers are pretty good too but I didn't use them at all.

I also personally know a level 101 veno using a Sharptooth Wolfling. Yes, that starting pet. To level 101, and she's doing awesomely.

So I think bottomline, just use a pet you like and looks nice and suits your playstyle. I like Crystalline Magmite, Shaodu .... That's it really.

Then when you're like 30 or something, start farming for a herc. A herc pet ticket is really cheap now. Like freaking 50 mil? I had to farm for 200mil back then, dear god. So yeap. Plus there's not a lot of venos know. We need good venos for sage amplify LOL. Plus, with herc or glacial walker or crystalline magmite, you can solo TTs and start making more money too! :D

Just wait till 2x is over for one month so prices go up again. LOL.

Wow, your server has it cheap. On RT those go for 80mil+.

I use a Gnome Saboteur as my main pet/DD, a Scorpiontail Voodooist as a speed/lure pet, and a Mistrealm Gargantuan for occasional tanking.
