Hey all,

As many of you noticed, our game servers suffered a mass disconnect at around 5:45 pm PDT. It turned out to be an issue with our ISP, and we were able to bring the servers back up around an hour and forty five minutes later.

We apologize for this inconvenience and we thank you for your patience.

So, hackers are not behind this?

Since there have been a lot of attacks from hackers to video games related companies and to the US Senate

In light of this, the cash-shop heavy turn the game has taken in the last year and a half, and the semi-recent attack on PSN, I can't help but wonder:

Frankie, if PWE were successfully **** by a malicious party, and our information (esp. billing information) compromised, what would PWE's response be? Would we be notified, or left in the dark until mysterious charges began appearing on our statements? Would the company be open and honest about what happened, the "hows" and "whys" of the attack, and the (nonspecific) measures being taken to correct it?

I stress this is all a what-if, since I don't believe that's what happened with today's downtime. But given the number of people and the amount of currency still being pumped into the game, it's more than an idle thought to believe PWE might eventually get hit with something more malicious than the DDoS a couple months back. In other words, I feel it's a question that has to be asked.

Yes, I remember now. Paypal, Google, etc. I feel slightly dumb. There is, however, the "billing profile," and while it fortunately doesn't contain financial info, it's still of a personal nature - so that part of my question stands, at least.

Mostly I'm just curious to hear how the company would respond if it were ever truly compromised by a malicious source.

Since Perfect World Entertainment and their billing department operate in California, they are required by California law to notify every single person in their financial database if said financial database has been compromised, regardless of where the persons in their database lives.

The method of contact in this case is e-mail, so the e-mail on the account would be contacted, just like in the Sony issue. If they don't, they can get sued up the ***. They can't "mysteriously leave us in the dark".

Depends on what you call financials. As a subsidiary, they're not like PWRD. However, their receipts come from Foster City, so much like employment, transactions that occur within the state are subject to it's rules.

i mean individuals dont directly engage in financial transactions, they are done through 3rd party payment processors like paypay, so they dont have any customer's financial information that is subject to compromise. the onus is on the payment processors to provide notice in the event of compromise.

IIRC some people do/can pay pwe directly here in the states. I can't remember...or at least there used to before the redid webpage. I think they used to have a direct buy option or something like that, I think my brother had me do it back in march when he bought me a warsoul helm for my birthday.....Frankie did you guys remove that payment method?

While you're right about that, I think they meant personal/billing stuff related to this game. For instance, the wallet part (name, address, etc.), e-mail, password.

And just to reiterate, Paypal's financial receipts come from Palo Alto (near PWE), and Google's from Mountain View (near PWE). In either circumstance, it looks like people are going to be relatively protected. Of course, that's all varying depending on what one finds to be secure, since even with said restrictions in place, Sony still got balls on their chin.

It never ceases to amaze me that the rambling ensues none the less. People, it's a corporation! With the number of people playing this game, and purchasing from the boutique, they DO NOT CARE if you were in PK, in BH, a TT, or just standing around looking sharp in the fashion you bought from them. Their ONLY concern was getting their "cash cow" back up and running so they do not lose too much profit. In essence, think about it; How much money did PWE lose while the server was down?b:mischievousb:cool
