Losing Exp

Ok, this is really annoying me now. Twice now I've had at least 45% or so exp in my exp bar and it keeps decreasing. Why is this? (I have a genie but it isn't equipped to my character and I'm not leveling it manually. Is it taking my exp still? :s).

This is really frustrating me because I'm at a noob level and I really want to level up, please help me someone! D':

    You lose exp when you die.

    Just to add on - your genie does not take any of your experience unless you manually feed it to the genie. Originally genies did take a portion of the exp you gained, but that was changed long ago.
