Feedback to Developers: Why I will not be playing Perfect World (Same-Sex Marriage)

I will begin by saying that I did search this topic before posting. I have read the other threads, and I am posting this because the discussion and response so far have been inadequate and irrational.
This looks like a game I might enjoy. It looks like a game I might even invest money in, if I enjoyed it enough. But upon reading the policy on character marriage and developer response to criticisms of that policy, I have decided that this is not a game I am willing to support with my time or my money. A specific political choice has been made to exclude me and others like me from aspects of the game on the basis of our sexual orientation.
The culture in China is irrelevant here. If you are attempting to to market and distribute a game to Americans and other westerners, you need to produce a game that is responsive to the needs of that audience. The game developers have obviously recognised that in a million other dimensions of game design. Bluntly, they have created a game designed to attract all westerners except a minority distinguished only by their sexual orientation.
There are two obvious (real) reasons why this might be:
1) The policy represents a fear of alienating homophobic elements in western populations (especially American) and reflects a belief that homosexuals or those sympathetic to them will simply overlook the discriminatory policy.
2) The policy reflects the personal feelings of a developer or group of developers who are immersively familiar with western culture and have decided to take a political stance on same-sex marriage.
My response is straightforward: homosexuals and those sympathetic to *** rights form a significant percentage of the potential market for this game, and taking a stance that alienates them (to say nothing of its moral implications) is a poor business decision. Simply: I (and potentially others like me) will be taking our money elsewhere because of this policy.

Everything has its beginnings, but it doesn't start at one. It starts long before that... The world is born From zero. The moment zero becomes one is the moment the world springs to life. One becomes 2. 2 becomes 10. 10 becomes 100. taking it all back to one solves nothing. so long as zero remains... One.. Will eventually grow to 100 again.0 -

You could have quoted yourself from the last one. I swear you said the EXACT same words lol.0 -
This thread is prob going to be closed for flame baiting, and this has been covered already.
The reason there is no same-sex marrage in this game is because in China (where this game is originally developed, as PWI is a translation basicly) same-sex marrage is illigal.

Oh god... not this again. If you bothered reading ANYTHING like you said u did, why are you whining. This game is BASED ON CHINESE IDEALS. Even though this is a American "susidiary" version of the game (idk how else to put that atm...), it's OWNED by the chinese, RAN by the chinese, and DEVELOPED by the chinese.
btw... homosexual marriages in RL keep getting shot down by voters too (least here in FL). Food for thought...0 -

- Pick a char name with a capital I or lowercase L in the name
- Find someone you want to marry
- Make alts with a capital I or lowercase L in the name
- Switch the I and L in the other alts' name and get married
- Put alts away and live happily ever after

For fear of being painted as not being "sympathetic", I have to point out that the game world is based upon old Chinese legends. So, yes, I'd have to say that the Chinese cultural aspects matter.
Would I like to see same-sex marriage as an option? Sure. Do I expect it to fit into the legend of the game world? No. Do I play anyway? Yes.
We're playing a game, one which takes place in an old-fashioned world which has many values we may no longer agree with. There's even a quest where you help a mother send her last son off to the war that's already claimed her husband and other children.
You don't see that sort of blind faith in war anymore. I can't expect that they'd be progressive toward marriage if those are the sorts of values they still cherish in this game world. And don't even get us started on in-game racism. b:chuckle[sigpic][/sigpic]

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. That's a reasonable point, but I still don't think it's sufficient rationale from a business perspective to justify alienating a chunk of your potential market.
Obviously this is a point that people have noted before me. I am not the first, second, or third person to post a thread of this sort. That alone should indicate that it's bothering a certain percentage of the potential playerbase and present a serious argument for altering the policy.0 -
It's not even commonly legal in real life, what makes you think it would be legal here?
Has it ever occurred to you the possible ramifications how allowing as oppose to maintaining the status quo?[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -
Not this again.
