How "free" is this game?

Hi forum-users!

I was considering starting to play this game, but I was wondering if it was possible to play it in a competitive way without spending actual money. If it's not possible, how much would a character cost on average?

    Let's do some simple math.

    Cost of a +5 refine = 100 1* dragon orbs = $13.50

    +5 refine on 10 items: $135.00

    +10 refine on weapon: $30

    Rank 8: $82

So, uh, for the very basics, excluding gear which I'll assume you'll be able to farm for, a competitive PvP-capable character would cost $242.

Multiply that by about 850,000 for the cost of that in ingame coins.

of course all of the above only matters really if you want to be top dog.

everything above is earnable without putting a single cent into the game - you just need to be willing to farm your backside off and merchant and be patient.

the only player to reach level cap apparently did it without charging anything. And apparently has better than average gear too.

It all comes down to what you want out of a game. If you are happy to play at your own pace and use it as somewhere to relax after work or school then go for it. Despite rumours to the contrary the game isn't quite dead yet.

    ^^^^this

I will never be top dog in this game, or even CLOSE, but i'm just playing for kicks. To date, i have not spent a single cent of real money in game, and while my gear isn't great, it's enough for me to go have fun.
Things said during a Twizted faction PK session:
Slayer_of_Souls: you guys are such suck ups. none of you have attacked twid.
Twiddzly(fac leader): no, sere killed me already.
Slayer_of_Souls: he's out there waiting for us, isn't he. i'm gonna die.
Sereneai: b:sin why don't you come find out.
    Kinglkaruga: you go first dule.

If you're the kinda person who hasta be top dog in the PvP scene, then you're pretty much required to dump at least a few hundred bucks into the game for gear, ground and air mounts, hp and mp charms (like a emergency battery for your hp/mp meter), and anything else you want.

If you're the kinda person who just likes to goof off and have fun with friends, then you can get by without having to put a single penny into this game. You'll just have to be patient when it comes to farming mats (used to make armor, weps, etc) and selling stuff.

So, it all really boils down to what kinda person you are.

Falcondance's calculation also assumes you'll be refining your gear the fastest way, not the cheapest way. getting 10 items to +5 can be done for less than the $135.00 estimated, if you're willing to put up with the time and frustration to do so. reference the famous "refining for cheap" thread and zoho spreadsheet.

who refines to +5 with dragon orbs :S

see OP, with a bit researching u can cut the amount of coins u need to pay quite a lot.

on the other hand the +10 calculation is way off; it's 30$ from +9 to +10.
+8+9 should be another 60$ and +6+7 could take another 30-40$

Well, it is possible, but you have to be willing to spend a lot of your time playing the market and figuring out how to make wise investments. The first person on PWI to make it to the level cap of 105 did it without spending a single cent on the game. You can see an interview with her here: PWI - Kitamura, First Player to 105!

But to be honest with you, that's not all that common because it involves a lot of work in game that most people aren't willing to do.

I'm just a player like anyone else, I don't work for PWI. The way I play, I level slowly, enjoy the game, and only invest about $10 per month, except on special occasions. I've done well enough that way so far, though admittedly I haven't reached end game yet (see my characters' levels below).

I say, try the game out, don't spend anything until at least level 30, and then see if you think the game is worth investing a few bucks in.

    Oh, and have fun! b:victory

ok i can clearly say that u can play for free. i haven't spent a penny on this game, sorry PWE i dont like the agreement we all must agree to before playing, and i am level 80 now.
Depending on your class will determine how fast u level.
Get in a good faction and do whatever quests you can.
This is not a fast leveling game no matter how you play. It took me 2 months to get to level 77 on pwe's other game BOI and i spent not a penny there either. You can tell by my start date that this game is meant to be played for months and months. There is only one player here in this game that is 105 and he spent alot of cash and did everything possible to level up plus was a member here for well over a year. There is question thow that he got there doing shady things.
BUT this game still is fun with plenty to do so if you are here just to level up fast without spending money than you need to get into a very good faction, hard to find these days, that will help you level up.
If you got 10 gigs of free space on your pc and time to kill than give this game a try but remember that this game will only live because players spend money here,
I would be level 105 by now if i spent 500 dollars here, all on hyper stonesb:laugh, but then what. I spend on average 7 hours a day here doing whatever to keep me lovin this game.

im sorry to say but this player had alts and that is one of the biggest cash shop users in the game.
plus did many shadey deals that he himself bragged about doing. i wish i had proof but my brother knows this player well in the real word and told me some interesting stories. But it is just a game and as long as you all have fun, than that is all that matters to me. life is too short to let pixles bring anyone down.

Rumors are just rumors. I don't put much stock in them. Show some solid evidence, then I might believe you.

Anyways, there are two level 105 players now, though I don't know how much (if anything) the other spent.
