A few months back, my graphics card conked out on me, and so i preceded to buy a new one. The old one was 256 and the new is 512. I started using the graphics card with an older computer. The computer had been set up as it had a female on-board graphics port, so i could still use my computer. It worked in this computer perfectly fine, except the computers motherboard has far too little processing power, making it almost impossible to play games effectively.

When i tried using a different motherboard, the computer started, then shut off, but was still running (the light was still on but it was otherwise unresponsive). This motherboard was hooked into the exact same power supply, disk drive, usb drives, hard drive, graphics card as the last.

I suspect that the power supply is not able to support the new motherboard as the previous had heat sync opposed to the newer having a fan. Before I went and spent money on a new power supply, I wanted to get confirmation that this was the problem.

EDIT: I should add that it would run Perfect World great (i had no lagg in west arch O.O) for a very short time then immediately do as i stated above.

What card? What PSU (manufacturer, wattage, how many +12v rails at what amps each)? Did you try CMOS reset (yes, it can fix that sometimes)? Made sure you plugged in the PCI-e power connector(s) to the card?
Banned for no reason on -two- accounts, thanks PWE

Please send in a ticket to Tech Support with the following information so we can try to figure this out for you. We need you to send us some of your computer's information.

    1) What is the make and model number of your computer?

    2) Please also tell us whether you are running a 32bit or 64bit version of Windows. You can find out in Windows by going here: Start > Control Panel > System & Maintenance > System. Then look under System > System Type. It will then display 32bit Operating System or 64bit Operating System. Include that info with the info we ask for below.

    3) To create a dxdiag log, go to Start, click on Run, then type in dxdiag and press Enter. Click on Save All Information as a text file (on your Desktop as an example.
If you are using Vista or 7, go to the Start Menu, click on the Search menu and type dxdiag.exe.

    4) Attach the dxdiag.txt that you save to your reply to us.

If you have a 64bit system, please click on the 64bit Dxdiag/DirectX button to save the correct log file.

This is important so that we can help you find the right software for your system.

I was going to tell you that doesn't tell us **** about the PSU, but it's irrelevant since you use an 8400GS. It's basically every bit as slow as onboard video, generates little heat, and uses hardly any power.

I think your PC is just old. REALLY old, like 6 years old, it's still using regular SDRAM rofl. Something's probably dying (capacitors maybe? Dell loves bad caps, Gateway might pull that too), or maybe your MOTHERBOARD ITSELF can't supply enough power to the card but this is unlikely (yours doesn't use external power apparently).

If you buy a new power supply, I suggest you get some 500w or higher tier 2 @ http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/323050.aspx
and then save up money for a real computer (built yourself, prebuilts are terrible, especially dell aka alienware). Sandy Bridge motherboards will be back in late April or March. The $5 integrated video on SB CPUs is better than your 8400GS, quite ironically.
Banned for no reason on -two- accounts, thanks PWE
