A Question For All

Many of you forum "old-timers" recall that as the beginning of PWI's downfall, with the release of Anniversary Packs. But that time has another significance as well.

It was the last time PWI held a true video contest*. It's been almost a year and a half since then. Meanwhile, HOTK and ESO recently concluded their own contests, just this past January. And that is why I pose the question:

Would you be interested/participate
if I were to sponsor and manage
a video contest for PWI?
^"Interest" is meant to state that you'd enjoy having a contest, not necessarily if you would plan on entering.
(Proposition below)

You all know my background by now, I think. It's true I don't agree with how the game is run. I've been very outspoken about that at times, and it hasn't exactly endeared me to the staff.
But this is a game, it's meant to be fun, and I've come to realize that for all the things that have changed here, it's always been fun to see what creative individuals have accomplished in film here.

These boards are overrun with QQ, anti-QQ, and troll threads, and the staff (Frankie & mods) spend so much time putting out fires and trying to keep a civil lid on things, it's really no surprise to me there hasn't been much room for a good contest. So here's what I propose:

1. There would be a set category for filming, such as Comedy, Drama, Action, or Romance.
2. At the end of the submission date (TBD), I will collaborate with any PWI staff willing to offer their time (Mods & GMs, by volunteer as their time permits) to narrow the film choices down to 5 or so.
3. As with the fashion contest, an open forum poll will decide the winner, and runners-up.
4. Prizes will be in-game coin of a set amount, distributed by myself. Value TBD.

Regarding 2: The biggest complaint with the previous Fashion contest seemed to be that all judging was internal - when we saw the finalists, many first reactions were "What? THAT? WTF?" or similar. By including visible community staff in that step, it is my hope to minimize those complaints. Additionally, the merits on which each Finalist is selected would be posted with their entry in the final poll.

So that's my proposal, comrades. If you guys are up for it, I will endeavor to give this community a new video contest - a real video contest.
Thoughts, comments, and concerns are always welcome.

EDIT: The poll is more evenly divided than I'd anticipated... So, speaking hypothetically, what genre or theme would you prefer to see as the contest subject? If this goes through.

*No, we are not counting the Genesis Trailer thing here. No filming - indeed, no in-game footage - is required of the participants. If anything, it is a music contest, which I don't believe PWI has done before.

IMHO, no game is worth 'fan content' to promote the game until the game Dev's get their ducks in a row and fix even the dumbest glitches of this game.

nope or not really.

reason being there were few that were very good. And the finalists pretty much rely on the sense of the devs/gms. (which we already know kinda is down the drain with the art contests...)
I dunno... for me i guess if someone is going to have a contest that requires the work and effort of someones talent, then the sponsor needs to do their homework too, by knowing how to judge it, where to judge, where to be careful of, and have a knowledge of the contest genre. Not just 'oo pwetty good, i picky dis one!'

Most of us who have been around since Day 1 of PWI knows very well who is offering to host this.

The simple fact of the matter is.....it is not worth the effort.

Just my personal opinion.

He is using the (whatever color it is) text, so obviously he knows we know who he is. AS such, Deceptistar, you are WELL aware of his talents with video creation and editting. I think that should be beyond question, if you've actually taken a moment to see what he has produced. Thus, by that basis, I'd say he is MUCH more qualified to be a judge that anybody else here, including you and me, unless you can submit proof that you are also a skilled video creator/editor.

Furthermore, he is offering to (a) work with gms [to make it official], and (b) to use his own time & money to make it rewarding to those who participate. So he's had some iffy things in the past? Show me somebody who has never done something 'iffy' before. I can certainly say my past is not squeaky clean. Scrutinize yourself a bit more carefully before you go pointing fingers at others, perhaps?

Some of the best laughs I've had were when watching videos made for the video contests. I'd say, if he wants to have a video contest, then by all means, let him! There's always gonna be people who like making videos ANYWAYS, and who now have a FURTHER incentive to make a PWI-related video for the contest. Who are you to tell them 'don't do it'? How arrogant!

The idea is a good one. While I have little talent with video creation myself, I would highly enjoy seeing what others can come up with. Perhaps make part of the reward be a news feature on the PWI home page showing the video and a few thoughts from the GMs about it. Kinda like... they used to do.

Thank you all for the responses so far.

I do feel I ought to have clarified one thing: "Interest" is meant to state that you'd enjoy having a contest, not necessarily if you would plan on entering. Honestly, if this were just about the game, I would concede that Kehrendorh is absolutely right - not worth the time or effort. But that's not the focus here: the focus is to provide an outlet for creativity, and for the enjoyment of all. You don't have to be politically savvy to find John Stewart funny, or an actor to appreciate the genius in Heath Ledger's last performance. Likewise, you don't have to like or play PWI to enjoy videos like this.

The poll will remain open until the end of the month, although I don't expect the current proportion of responses to change much.

That is why I specifically stated I would personally coordinate with community staff (as their time allows) - I don't believe I ought to be sole judge, but nor would I put my faith in some suits in an office somewhere who we never see or speak with. As for my own credentials... I sincerely hope one angry outburst is not all you remember me for.

"Suck up" answers for past deeds are just as useless to this question as troll posts.

If the interest is here, I will try. And if the poll decides otherwise, I shall continue my focus on other, more personal endeavors.

im not sure if you see and understand what was going on.
Im not bashing him or anything. No one said hes personally not fit to be a judge. (where you are imagining stuff i do not know) He simply wanted thoughts and comments.

in which i reply (later), if you want an HONEST opinion and not a SUCK UP answer, does it matter who the OP is? No. His main question is if the pple on the forum want a video contest or not. How simple can it get? Im not gonna deny that if there was a video maker celebrity genre on the forums, he'd probably take the top. But his 'omg status', as SlasherSin was feverishly stating, should not be a factor on pples comments and concerns if their answers are not favorable with the OP.

i actually quite like your works, its one of the best ones out there. (i just remember the outburst cause it was so unexpected of you) Personally id rather have you as a solo judge cause the pwi cast in the past have shown themselves to be....not so strong in the creative department.
(Sucks to have fans tho, that think only agreeable posts should be allowed.)

Managing, running, administrating, whatever term you prefer to use - just means that it's my contest in the end, and mine is the final say in the matter. As for the "load of ****," I don't expect an overwhelming influx of videos even if I do this - the Sitcom thing only had 7 entries, one of which wasn't even revealed until after it was over.

Truth be told, bribery does work best. If it were PWI handing out the prize, they could make it Zen, a 'rare' mount, tons of coin, whatever. If I said in the OP that the reward would be 10,000,000 coins, I'm fairly certain there'd be a much higher "Yes, do it!" response. But I have very few assets across any server except HT, and it would take me a while to accumulate anything worth offering as a reward - thus, I need to know there's interest there before wasting my time trying to offer something I don't have.

I would say yes I want to see a video contest lol... Me and guildies look on youtube all the time and pass the links over vent. Personal favorites have been Perfect Heros, Imperfect, and Perfectly Lost.

But lets face it... If we look at other versions we can then find stuff like Grim TV made by Grimno and.... Who was that one white haired demon veno???? (I forgot)

Everyone had there own style of videos and all were great in there own right for comedy, randomness, or even just epic storytelling. Frankly for the most part there isn't very much offered lately for videos and I for one want to see themb:victory

I believe that I could be of assistance in this whole thing. I have some free time, and I enjoy watching videos made by people from the game. I like Riot Act, and I have been looking at a few of the others. Sadly, not all of them play on mobile devices.

In short, I would love to see this idea come to fruition, so this gets a vote for Other from me...merely because I can't edit video to save my life anyway! I hope this idea gets off the ground!

I missed this suggestion before, but that is indeed a very good idea. I would love to see the Featured Video section return, if only for its own sake. Though I sometimes wonder if perhaps I was the only one poking Frankie weekly about that.

Had to update the main post. As the edit states, if the final outcome is "Yes," what genre or theme would you prefer to see? I don't know anyone who doesn't enjoy a good laugh, so comedy was my first thought, but we've already seen that with the Sitcom thing - not keen on repeating stuff, either...

Wow, I can't believe some of the posters here. The cynicism has sunk to a new low. >_> Keph, I believe I speak for all people who still believe in the soul of this game (if not its management) when I say it's good to see you back.

I am 100% in support of this idea, even though I lack video-making experience of any kind. The issue of staff support on this project must be considered, though. This being a creative project, and given the staff's striking lack of interest in them lately as you mentioned, I'm not sure I'd like it if such a thing was harnessed by them as a "hey look at all our creative players, ain't PWI great!?!?" pseudo-marketing tool, after it was players like you who took the initiative to run it.

On the other hand, I have personally been in a position where my job was to design community events for a player-driven community, as a fellow player myself... and the biggest lesson I learned from it, is that you will come under fire for your management of it, no matter what you do. There's this sense of "why this clown? why not me?" that's always latched onto by the egotistical in any community, and sadly they are often the most vocal as well. -_- Therefore it takes an enormous amount of pre-existing community respect to run such a thing while catching minimal flak for it.

What I'm trying to say is: if anyone can run a thing like this, it's you. Godspeed.
