Magmite skills

My magmite is lvl 96 and it did pretty well using bash, tough, sandblow and threaten. I guess it'd be even better at holding aggro if i maxed sandblow - LOL. Using tough once and threaten twice in a minute only leaves 15 seconds for you to sweat against a really tough boss when solo'ing.0

Eh, it helps slightly, but overall, you still get more output from bash. For normal mobs, they die fairly quickly, and I've seen FR not run it's full course many times. Long term, that 1 normal attack is not going to overtake the use of another bash firing. You'd get something like FR = 200% + 1 attack against Bash = 200% + 200% in the same amount of time. The question is, would the extra damage you do when the mob is debuffed with howl be more or less than the extra damage the pet would do with ele bash or ream. I haven't run the numbers, so I don't know. I do think in a squad situation it's pretty safe to say howl would win out, if you have other magic DDs in squad the beside yourself.
I don't remember the exact numbers and couldn't find my notes on this, but from my experience with pure arcane, vit arcane, and LA, you do get a slight advantage with Howl over another elemental bash. I can't comment on HA, but I'd assume it's similar.
I wouldn't recommend to do this on a tank pet (personally, I don't see any reason to not have a tank pet and a DD pet, especially pre-100), but one of my DD pets had Bash, Icicle, Fireball, and Howl for a long time.
Howl not only increased my damage output, but also the pet's output as well, since it combined with the two elemental bashes. Also, Howl is the strongest magic defense debuff (with the exception of the myriads when they proc) if kept at level. It marginally beats out the cleric debuff if they keep it maxed for their level. But since this isn't in anyway a priority for most clerics, it's bound to be much stronger.
Specifically to this scenario: When do you want the DPS? If it's for times when you're attacking, I'd probably go for Howl. If it's for times when you're stuck spam healing, that m.def debuff isn't going to do you any good and I'd opt for FR/elemental bash.0 -
i recently put FR on my lv80 Crystaline, and even though its only lv1 atm, i noticed it made a big difference on the bosses, when i was doing solo TT runs. when i can, its going to be leveled up. i had intended to level Bash to 5, but it wouldnt go...anyone know when it can be?
i also have one of the tideborn golems(-cant recall his kinds name, because when i click on him, i see the name i gave him, "IceCube"! ^_^). been thinking i should take out that water move and put on something else, but havent decided what yet. any suggestions?
and is there any way, other than the expensive 'forget and replace' system, to rearrange pet skills, so that they use different ones than in the present order? i would really very much appreciate help on this...my purse is pretty empty! ^_^

Excellent point, and a rather likely scenario for a tank pet - especially if the OP is one who enjoys tanking instances occasionally. Although personally, I appreciate having roar in case of emergencies, rather than a damage or debuff skill. As I've already mentioned, bash/roar/tough/threaten seems ideal for a tank pet in that these skills cover all the situations such a pet is likely to be used in.I wouldn't recommend to do this on a tank pet (personally, I don't see any reason to not have a tank pet and a DD pet, especially pre-100), but one of my DD pets had Bash, Icicle, Fireball, and Howl for a long time.
Agreed. If you have the time to level one, the varicose scorpions around City of the Lost, and the Shadow Ranger/Dark Wanderer near City of Raging Tides both make excellent attack/debuff pets. If you don't have the time/inclination to level and skill one of these, a Kowlin might be worth considering... it starts at level 60, and already has an excellent skill selection for the job (bash, ream, howl, pierce, iirc).0 -

I'm on the fence with Roar. It's great if you know how to use it and use it appropriately, but I've seen it used incorrectly far far too many times to really be happy with the skill.
Maybe I'm just too oldschool, but in my opinion, Roar should only ever have to be cast in two situations: 1. There are adds and you need to grab aggro fast. 2. You are intentionally bouncing aggro around between multiple people since no one there can fully tank the boss.
Yes, there are always accidents, but really, any DD should know how much damage they're dealing and be able to scale back accordingly (if they can't tank). So in theory, these "accidents" should be few and far in between, meaning you have a skill you almost never use, effectively wasting the skill slot.
Although I guess with the epeens running around and all the "hey I'm a level 60 sin! watch me tank this!" when they really can't, Roar does have it's place...0 -

i bet you have. "tanking" just means holding the aggro off of somebody else; if your pet's ever been the one to get beat up on instead of you, then your pet's been tanking for you.
tank pets --- pets specifically built to tank well --- are fun in two ways. one, they can free you up to DD all-out yourself (hoping that the mob'll die before you steal aggro, or you'll be able to roar that aggro back onto the pet in time), which is an interesting challenge in itself; and two, they can hold the aggro of stuff too tough for you to take on at all, otherwise. you might be stuck spam healing the pet the whole fight, but if the boss goes down at the end and you couldn't have killed it otherwise...
and then there's the game of aggro ping-pong, which you can play with a tank pet you know well enough if your own damage output is well balanced with its. you steal aggro off the pet; before the mob reaches you to beat on you, the pet steals it back; rinse and repeat until the mob dies. the mob's supposed to be too busy turning around to face new targets to do much damage before it dies. well enough played, that one always gives me a nice sense of accomplishment. it's done without using roar, of course --- roar's cooldown is too long for this game anyway.
(i'm currently teaching myself how to solo the quillhog king with either of my tank pets. no luck so far; i get a good start on him, then he wipes my pet's hp faster than i can heal. he's supposed to bramble himself, but i never see that buff on him --- is it an invisi-buff or some such...?)[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] Heaven's Tear alts: KenLubin, Sou_Hon, JudyCaraco --- level 5x chars.0 -

He brambles himself after you get his HP down to around half, iirc. It's not invisible, you see a little green icon under his name just like the veno skill.0 -
...so your sole pet, that you use for everything is a kowlin? interesting! you're the only person i know who does that. i use mine to tank a lot, though nothing really big like Polearm or Guarnob. but i have sent her in to DD when i was in a couple of guilds that did WBs every week....she did a good job and since the aggro wasnt on her, she could really put her two cents worth in where it did the most good.
wonder why kowlins are so rarely seen (except at Christmas time, beating down snowmen!^_^), yet they are so freaking expensive. my daughter would really like to have one, but cant afford to buy one, and not fast enough at casting to catch one in the crowds that show up at spawn times.Aniella - Harshlands wrote: »Whats so fun w tank pets??... xD i never have used any tank pets o.o
