Marrow Magic question

So I just got the skill today, and I was wondering if it converts the phys. def into magic defenses, or if it just adjusted the numbers by that amount.

In example, with heavy armor, would you get the most out of marrow magical due to high phys. defense converting to more magic def, or would it be better with light armor due to the already higher magic defenses?

Thank you in advance for any answers.

No, having higher phy def wouldn't improve your magic def after marrow. It subtract XX% from your current equipment phy def then adds the same % of your current equipment magic def on top of your base magic def.

The point of magical marrow is to give a heavy armor BM with average mdef (3-4k unbuffed) around 8-9k magical defence which is enough to withstand most attacks with the HP given by refining HA. Also note your pdef while it is reduced significantly still provides some protection from physical attacks (although I wouldnt go tanking 5aps chars or 2x recast/rank9 barbs with mdef marrow on).

with light armor and similar orns you would have 4-5k mdef (around 1k higher) and your magic marrowed mdef would be in the 10-11k range however your pdef will be significantly lower (low enough actually that incidental physical attacks will kill you very quickly)

This is why BM's wear heavy armor, as we have the choice of magical marrowing vs multiple opponents without opening ourselves up as much to physical attacks. Against certain classes you need to mdef marrow (because of the additive buff/debuff rule it directly opposes all debuffs to your magical defence so its useful vs archers, clerics and mages) however some of the classes its good against also have significant physical attacks (Quickshot, plume shot) and hence if you dont have sufficient pdef after marrowing you will die very quickly.

General rules for marrow, consider your Aura of the golden bell defence buff (60% at level 10, 75% demon, 90% sage) try to keep the pdef reduction to no more than 20% over your current bell defence amount (thus demon marrow is good with demon bell, sage marrow should be used with sage bell although to be honest it will hurt you vs physical classes as its a 30% difference)

Ah, thank you very much for posting that. I don't recall reading that in any of the guides, but now that you bring it up, that makes a lot of sense. Thank you once again for the answers.
