sorry all I know this is a daft question but, is it possible to activate the account stash without spending real money?

You can buy mall items in game as well, from other players. Look for the account stash stone in cat-shops around town, or ask for someone to sell one to you in World Chat. It'll be expensive, though, so I hope you have enough in-game coin b:victory
