Is there a better way to get craft materials?

Okay, I get that I can buy most weapons and armors at a store, or better yet, from a quest or drop, but I'd like to work on my skills, and the one that most bothers me is tailor, with blacksmith not far behind. I'm tired of maiming weak monsters, praying for them to drop some cotton thread or grease, which theoretically should be more common than it is. I'm wondering if there's a better way, like the grand exchange on another popular RPG where I can grab these easily from other players or simply from an NPC, instead of spending hours grinding for any combination of four drops or so if I'm lucky.

You can buy them from the cash shop, from cat shops and on the auction house. Some times you can get good deals on random cat shops. Best way really is to farm the stuff yourself IMO. The only problem with that is if your level is a lot higher than the mob you are trying to kill the drop rate decreases. I've been messing around with it and it seems if you group up with people that are in the right level range of the mob the items drop. So maybe you can make a deal with a friend. Only other way would be to roll an alt and use it for farming.
This site is pretty helpful for finding materials. http://www.pwdatabase.com/

You can use the auction house:

Here you will buy items from other players - but the prices are usually higher than if you buy directly from their catshops, higher than if you set up your own catshop offering to buy the items near where they drop - and of course much higher than killing monsters yourself.
Crafting is kinda painful in this game because some of the craft materials only drop from low level monsters, and (so as to discourage high level players camping them to the detriment of newbies) higher level characters have terrible drop rates from lower level monsters.
Still, those are your options. The auction house is definitely the 'grand exchange' you are looking for,
Edit:
You can also buy materials from the cash-shop. This is, however, utterly insane with gold prices the way they are right now; though is sometimes actually the cheapest way (you can buy gold with in-game coin from the auctioneer, as well as with real cash)0 -
if you play on Dreamweaver (not sure its the case on other servers, but most likely the shops will be found in the same general area) there are a nice handful of shops located near the West Archosaur Auction House (or if you prefer to look at it as being located by the Blacksmith, that works as well). These shops will generally buy and sell crafting materials, one in particular is actually a lighter shop (on DW server) and seems to offer the best rates both ways, pretty much keeping a lock on the crafting market for the particular items he deals in.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
