Pretty much. For the first 30 levels plain swords have highest auto attack dps. You will recieve axes as quest rewards that are nicer equipment, 3 star, better mods, that will actually have better dps. You don't start specializing in weapons until level 29 so you will statting for your future.
When you do specialize at level 30 you will find fists kill 1 mob fastest and with little mp/skill usage. Swords are right behind that, then pole, then axe. Axes you'll like for aoeing, and for their stuns (first axe stun learned at 29, whereas the most useful fist skill, cyclone heal, isn't learned till 49). The 4 specialty sword and pole skills you will find less useful in pve, the main reason you would pick these paths being their level 59 skills.

You have 29 levels to play around with your bm before you really start devoting your coin and spirit to any one weapon path. Statting 3str/2dex will allow you to pick any one, combo, or all weapons you chose. If you do pick a single weapon (dont) then 3/2 will give you the most damage for that weapon anyways.

Well you need 3str/level to wear heavy armor. That's the beauty of the BM, wearing heavy armor. If you're going to be a LA melee, go for Assassin instead. The 2dex/level lets you use Fist/Claw. No points for vit, so shard with citrines (+hp) and find +vit gear when possible. That's about what I've learned from the forums so far. I haven't had a bm over 30 yet, but I play with mine from time to time.
