Fist vs Axe/Hammer: More Damage?

So, I know for sure I am going with the Axe/Hammer way for my BM because of the skills. Recently I was talking to a friend who went with AH but then uses fists for normal mobs (AH skills, fist weapon) I am wondering in the end which one does the most damage.

I understand Axe/Ham hit harder up front but are slower.
Fists don't hit as hard, but are faster.
So when you put them together.
Which one, in the end, does the most quick and efficient damage?
