Why there is a X at the place of someone's avatar? Is it because they got banned?

    a don't bump threads it is against the rules of conduct

    b it is more likely that the avatar image for that character has got corrupted at some point (the images get updated when people level so I presume there is some sort of script on the web server which does this from the game data periodically)

    Browsers put something that looks like an x in a box for images that they have trouble downloading?
