All-rounder Pet?

Hi all,
I've been reading quite a few threads about a good all-rounder pet, but most of them were before the RT expansion, and so I wanted a few newer opinions.
Specifically, another land pet in addition to my Glacial Walker. I've seen in quite a few places that the Dark Wanderer is a good second land pet to have, but I'd like something that's smaller, but perhaps with the same stats? I want a pet that's a reasonably good tank (Skatefish is my air pet, and something a chunk more durable than that would be good), keeps aggro well, and a bit faster than the golem. Basically, something like the DW without actually being one.
Mechcrab seems like a nice choice, as does some wolves (though, the types confuses me a bit, and I have no real idea which one is better). I read that the Shaodu Cub is nice, but it does pretty low dmg, so I don't think he's the one for me (that, and he's expensive b:surrender ).
If anyone has used any of these or has any recommendations, I'd love to hear them!
P.S. I have a DW right now, actually. I find that with lvl 3 bash, he doesn't hold aggro all that well (not as well as my Walker, at least), and...well, I just want something smaller. One huge pet on top of me is enough xD.

stats like dark wanderer only smaller? varicose scorpion, maybe?[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] Heaven's Tear alts: KenLubin, Sou_Hon, JudyCaraco --- level 5x chars.0

Hmm, from what I've read (I chose the wolf at the beginning, since it was the first choice xD), the scorp is really fragile? I'd like the pet to be on the tankish side, since I usually do most of the damage anyways, so less heals would be awesome.0

the scorpion is a bit fragile, but so's the dark wanderer. they're both damage dealer pets.
myself, i use an eldergoth as my third land pet along with the walker and wanderer. it's... i'd say a slight bit tougher than the wanderer, but nowhere near as tough as the walker. if i had a spare pet slot i'd experiment with one of the higher-level wolves, a guardian wolf or a neolithic wolf; or maybe i'd try a high-mag-def tanker like the antelope pup, for those pure magical mobs. but that's me.

While the Dark Wanderer may seen fragile it really isn't, comparing to strong tanking pets such as the Glacial Walker will make it seem that way however. Type 4 wolves are pretty much tanking pets with a low dps output so i'm not sure they would make for good substitutes for a Wanderer. If you want a balanced all rounder pet my recommendation would be the frog, very decent tank, very decent dps, small and quiet. Second best would be the lvl 1 Qingfu, slightly better stats than froggie on both damage and defense although the model is larger and not as attractive. Third choice would be a type 1 wolf, especifically those starting at level two such as the Sharptooth. They get the beast damage out of all wolves and are certainly ressilient if not tanks. If you want to trade some damage for extra endurance type 2 wolves, such as the Darkbreed, are also pretty decent on all stats.
I'm afraid you won't be able to find a pet that's got a dps comparable to the Wanderer other than the lvl 2 Scorp however. Next on the list you've got the Walker, Magmites and Herc, all of which make terrific tanks but none of which is exactly what you could call small. The Antelope pup has got decent damage and great mag res but is somewhat fragile on the phys side and the noise can be somewhat annoying. Kowlin would be next on line (i may be missing a couple of pets here) and it's got an attractive model along with a very manageable size, but it's even more fragile than the Wanderer or the Scorp.
So, yeah, consider Froggie if you want decent above average dps and good tanking stats. although bear in mind the small package comes at a price and it won't be nearly as a good as walker except against mag mobs.0 -
rare pets like the bear or frog are usually well rounded pets but low dps0

Eldergoth Marksman / Sharpshooter. Until 89+ you wont find a better lure pet, it can tank some bosses before a Herc, it's mdef/hp/pded are well balanced, it's dps is decent, and it can avoid short range AoE giving you more time to DD.Be kind: Help the GMs to depopulate the servers.0

Thanks for the information, everyone!
After comparing stats a bit, it seems that if I wanted small pets, frogs or pups are the best way to go...though the free alternatives are really nice too, except the size bit. I probably should've thought of this a lot sooner than now x_x
Regarding the recommendation for the Eldergoth--a ranged pet seems to be a good idea, but its attack speed is very slow, so can it keep aggro or DD well? As well, when it's doing ranged damage, is it easy to steal aggro from it? From what I understand, it can't use skills in range mode, so it seems to be difficult to not have bosses on my tail after a few hits.
Anyone have any opinions on Mechrabs or wolves? Are they any good in comparison to the other pets listed here?0 -
an eldergoth keeps aggro decently if you leave its bash on as the default skill, but then it's really not much different from a melee pet. turning bash off and using the ranged attack, the eldergoth holds aggro like a wet tissue holds... really heavy things; you have to let it land three or four hits before you open up with any attacks of your own, and even then tone down your damage. on the upside, ranged tanking will let you hold mobs still that would otherwise kite you all over the map, or tank things at a distance that would flatten a pet if it used melee attacks.
type 1 wolves are surprisingly decent, although mine eventually wore out its usefulness. if i'd loaded it up with better skills, i think it would have lasted me much longer. haven't tried a mechrab, though i've been sorely tempted...[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] Heaven's Tear alts: KenLubin, Sou_Hon, JudyCaraco --- level 5x chars.0 -

Mechcrabs are decent tanking pets , add threaten and it can take lot's of things , not as sturdy as golems but still a reliable pet
starter wolves are decent DD pets , while Guardian/lunar wolves have decent phys def , high mag def and can be used for luring or tanking normal mobs.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Actually the Froggie was amongst the top 10 dps before TB pets were introduced. Given the number of veno pets available i think it would be unfair to call it low damage. It is outmatched by the Qingfu, although to be honest i think i like the Frog better.
It's unfortunate Frogs, once very popular pets, seem to have been forgotten by the player base. If you want a small all rounder you can actually call a tank it certainly is the best option. If i was starting over, knowing what i know now, i would certainly use a Froggie, along with a Dark Wanderer. Have been thinking on a side LA veno alt to eventually transform into HA (although not until Manray is at least 90+) so i may end up doing this at some point...
Yes, the Shaodu Cub is certainly a low dps pet on the other hand, although certainly well worth it...0 -
Because of the low atk rate / high patk of the Marksman, it's dps goes up better with skills. It is very close to the frog in survivability and well roundedness. The Frog's great mdef would be great if there were more mobs that did matk only, while a Marksman can force matk only on many mobs. Range tanking with it is a feature. Why people bother ragging on it for aggro when it's probably going to be mostly used for soloing / spam healing (no chance of stealing aggro) anyway. Mine had plenty of aggro w/ Claw for tanking world boss [?] while my Wiz ~10 levels below DD'd. The frog is useless as it has no real advantage over any other pet. A Carapest Terror has higher mdef.Be kind: Help the GMs to depopulate the servers.0

Well, it all goes down to opinion. Walkers are not made obsolete by the higher damage output of Scorps and Wanderers (at least for unherc'ed venos) since they still bring better tanking to the table. It all depends on the exact configuration you may want to use. A Froggie should handle most tanking jobs a Shaodu Cub can, bringing much better dps in exchange for some diminished tanking ability. Some people may find this useful, especially if pet size is a consideration to them when choosing a tanking pet.0

Thanks for the clarifications, everyone. b:thanks I'll try some stuff out on an alt (lvl 39, so perfect for this) by taming a Mechrab, Guardian Wolf, and Eldergoth Sharpshooter when they become available and try them out to see which one suits me more. Froggie sounds awesome, but I don't have the coins for that (nor the time to level him up, unfortunately).0
