Connection Issues

I have been trying to sort out my connection issues that have recently started occuring. I sent a ticket to the helpdesk and oh how helpful they were. I was instructed to run a traceroute to their servers but am unable to get any results. The only response I get is 'Request Timed Out'. I also get the same response when I try to ping the servers. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

However, I do happen to have a second computer, one that is wired to my router, and the traceroute works fine on that one. The only major difference between the two that I can see is that that one runs XP and this one Windows 7.

I have attempted to run the traceroute with the router wired to this computer and received the same results.

So I believe I've narrowed the cause down to my computer, however I'm stumped as to how to sort it out. I've opened the port 29000 on my firewall, turned off my firewall, turned off all antivirus software and whatnot, and still I am unable to get a response from the servers.

If anyone could help I'd most appreciate it.

If it should be needed here is my DxDiag file and I can also produce my HijackThis file if need be.

As we explained in your ticket, you have narrowed down the issue to your PC because it works on the other one.

We gave you links to Windows network support pages, and gave you the IP addresses for the servers so that you can change whatever settings that you need for your router, computer, antivirus, firewall, etc.

We have pointed you in the right direction. It is easier if you have someone physically there that can help you at your computer and make the changes for you if you are not familiar with PC network settings.

Sometimes it is often something simple that is overlooked.

List out everything that you have tried so far, and what errors you have gotten.
Do you need help learning about patching the game, installing it, changing antivirus/firewall settings, changing network settings, learn how to use a computer, keeping your PC maintained and more?

The things I've tried is it?
    Then...

    Disabled all antivirus and firewalls.
I have added port 29000 to the exceptions in the firewall.
Added the program client and other exectubales to my safe list in all antivirus software.
I have forwarded the port 29000 through my router.
I attempted to set up a static IP.
I attempted to hard-boot the computer.
Placed my computer in a DMZ.
I've pinged and tracert google.com to see if I can get a response there and have had no problems.
Connected the computer directly to the router to rule out any router problems.
The fact I can get a response from the other computer in my house shows it's not my provider.
I've downloaded another of your games 'Heroes of Three Kingdoms' and have disconnected after a minute or so.
Logged back on to PWI to see if I was still receiving the problem and it has now gotten worse as to actually tell me it's disconnected and logs me out, again after a minute.

You're probably right in saying that it's something simple but I have no idea what it might be.

okay, I see a laptop, all your devices/drivers/ect seem to be fine. I play on a lesser system with Win7U 64-bit and have no issues. If you to a Tracert to the PWI game server.

    In a Command Prompt type...
    tracert pwieast2.perfectworld.com

    And what are the responses.

Also, what is the PING response to the server?
    ping pwieast2.perfectworld.com

Lastly, exactly what software are you using for firewall/anti-virus/anti-malware/ect.
What other programs do you have that may be utilizing your internet connection.

I'm more that happy to help, but I need more specific info to work with.

As for antivirus, firewalls and the like; I have Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, Comodo Internet Security and the standard Windows firewall.

I don't have any other software that I'm aware of that uses my internet connection.

I've also run the tracert and ping in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and received a similar result.

I look forward to your response.

hmm on either tracert, hops one and two should be less than 1, 3 and 4 typically less than 50. You're having it timeout, and still getting a ping of 51 to google. Yet you have a second computer that is operating just fine. Sounds like there may be something wrong with your LAN/internet settings.
The DXdiag does not show the network connections. Are you wired or wireless? if Wireless, what band, how many routers in your area, encryption is used, (if so what type), ect.

"ipconfig /all" may provide useful information as well.

The computer I'm having trouble on is wireless.

I can see twelve other routers from my computer.

    My router is in wireless mode 802.11n 7 802.11g & 802.11b.

The bandwidth is currently at 40MHz.

Here is where your biggest issue is. Too much crosstalk. IPconfig doesn't tell me what speed your laptop is connecting at, but here's a few tips.

    1. Narrow the bandwidth. If you don't have any B-devices, turn it off. If your Laptop is N-capable and you don't have any G-devices in your network, turn G off so you're just using N. If you have any G-devices, that is the fastest transfer rate you will get.

    2. find out what channels the other routers are operating at and list them by which is closest. (Closest having stronger signals). Once you have that done, take a look at the channels they use. 1-11 are available, but each channel overlaps the next. 1, 6, and 11, are the only "clear" channels. So say most of the routers close you you are using 1-8, set yours to 11.

    3. If you have an 'auto" setting for the bandwidth, use it. Forcing 40 with that kind of router congestion may be causing an issue as well. With auto it will default to 20, but use 40 if it's beneficial. Plus there are very few devices that can properly operate at 40MHz and this, along with the large number of wireless traffic is your main point of signal failure. Most products refuse to run in the 40MHz mode if there are ANY 20MHz (11b/g pre-N) WiFi systems detected in the neighborhood. If you have it 'forced' to 40MHz then it just quits working.

So to review, change bandwidth to 20MHz or auto, and check the signal frequencies.

After some tinkering I found out my laptop is not N-capable and so have turned all modes off to leave 802.11g on its own.

Doing that turned the bandwidth automatically to 20MHz.

Using the netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid command I found out the channels the other routers were operating on and a lot of them were using channel 11 so I changed mine to a low number.

I went through the process of tracert and ping again. Still the same. But I'm thankful for your insight into my wireless connection so I thank you for that.

How is the client working now? Are you still experiencing a lot of disconnects? I'm really curious now. It seems that we've resolved the largest issue with your connection, but your ping and tracert responses aren't healthy? It's odd, but may still have something to do with the wireless.

I know that the connection and encryption that PWI uses does not work wonderfully with wireless, however, you should be able to play reasonably. If you're still getting a lot of disconnects, try using the wired connection and see if there is a difference. If there is, then wireless is the problem. If there is not, then the issue may be with something else on the system.

Currently I am still experiencing a lot of disconnects. They appear to be occuring about 1-2 minutes after I've logged in.

At this moment I am unable to utilise the wired connection as someone else is using the computer it's attached to and that one has no wireless capabilities. However, when I do get a chance to gain hold of it I shall inform you of how the connection fares.

I've also contacted my ISP today and am expecting a response from them within the next two business days, though who knows when they'll actually get around to replying, and I hope to rule out completely that this problem is not caused by my ISP.

EDIT:- It's free now. I'll connect it up shortly.

EDIT 2:- The problem persists whilst wired directly to the router. After also running and ping and tracert test I found that they remain as they were whilst connected wirelessly.

Hmmm definitely sounds like it's something on the OS/software end then. I'll have to do some digging into protocols and settings, but it's almost 1am here and my brain is not functioning properly right now. I'll take a fresh look at it in the morning. =)

To Allisandre: I eagerly await the results from your digging.

To hadizaatiti1: Whether directed at me or Criminal I don't know but I shall answer all the same: I have reinstalled the game, I have even done a system restore and then installed the game. Problems continue.

EDIT:- Received a reply from my ISP. Sort of shocking how quickly they replied. They instructed me to add the DNS manually, flush DNS and then to check it.

From the check I received the following result:

    C:\Users\UserName>nslookup pwieast2.perfectworld.com
