Any hydrophobic players out there?

Hi forum, I'm a new player and is enjoying every step of trying to figure this game out. It's a beautiful game, but I've been hydrophobic all my life. and I absolutely hate going underwater (I'm obviously not a tideborn). How do I say this? When I'm underwater, it feels as if something bad is drawing near, kind of like a weird vibe that death is around the corner, and I imagine all sorts of things to be beyond what I can see but is closing in on me. It's hard to explain and also hard for non-hydrophobics to understand.

I guess I created this post to find if there are any more of you out there? Am I the only weenie, Lol. And if there's a game feature that lets you edit your surroundings, that'd be great! Or just any game advice as I am still exploring this new game. :)

I love underwater. 90% of my ingame coins come from underwater.

Not when it comes to clinical phobias. They are vastly different than just a fear. Such as, I have a fear of tigers. It is a normal fear. A phobia of tigers though would mean just imagining a tiger could cause a person to have a breakdown. Just the same, a fear doesn't usually pass over into a virtual world, unless the game itself is meant to cause moments of fear (like in L4D where they are trying to cause those effects). So, if the OP really is hydrophobic, she either needs to stay out of the water in this game at all times, or consult a professional on a way to lessen or eliminate her phobia.

    @OP:

Don't worry about it, just play as normally as you can while avoiding the water. I myself have coulrophobia, and so playing on Dark Carnival in L4D2 is quite impossible for me. While it is not a clinical diagnosis (obvious by the use of the term), it is quite severe and passes over to virtual environments.

One thing you might be able to try is messing with the visual effects of the water to see if you can make it seem less scary to you. But if you're as extreme a hydrophobic as you say you are, I don't know if that'll help. :/

No, I'm not afraid of ingame water, as in wetness, but being underwater gives me the vibes of really being underwater, thus I subconsiously put myself in the situation, again, it's hard for non-hydrophobics to understand.

I gotta say I would love to sit in on that session when a person figures out why they are afraid of water. It would be..................interesting. No offense intended of course I wish there was a way I could help but short of avoiding water I cannot say there is a way to alter it. You should probably count your blessings though some of the worst quests in the game are underwater. The water itself in game is similar to flying without a mount anyway other then the swimming action when on the least graphics I hope that helps a bit.

If you have an understanding of the water and bouancy, then it's really quite simple to grasp. Hold your breath and stretch your arms out to float, hold as little breath as possible and crunch up like a ball to sink.

Ever tried like, floating on top of the water surface on your back with your hands stretched out and your ears in the water? That seems like it'd be a good first step. Maybe the thought of "omg I could fall in any moment" would freak you out, but you really only have to keep your arms stretched out. That's the cheat code that lets you float.

Fortunately there really aren't many underwater quests and you can easily skip most of these. You shouldn't really be going through any trouble as long as you don't have a trouble with ocean ennviroments in which you don't have to submerge yourself. Now, i'm not sure about any culti actually requiring underwater fights, but you can probably get through these, if any, by having a couple of friends do the heavy work and yourself just being at the surface so you can limit your exposure to this enviroment. I'll admit it really is hard to imagine what your condition must be like but i hope you're able to find friends who will support you through any scenario that might make you uncomfortable.

As I recall, the only culti quest where you'd need to be underwater is the one for 79 in which you need to kill Ru Ci the Confucian Templar. Every other water quest is pretty much skippable.

The OP may have a problem with the water part of fb59, but she can just stick to the land path if necessary.

Edit~ This just occurred to me. OP, do you have any problem with environments where it's raining?

No, not really, I wouldn't be able to play a lot more games if I did, it's just water, it's hard to explain.
I'm not SCARED when I'm underwater in the game, but I can physically (as i'm sitting on my chair typing this) feel uncomfortable, as if someone is breathing down my neck.

I get it. Don't worry. I was just making sure you weren't afraid of like water in general. :X

You apparently don't know much about phobia's then, as medicine cannot fix it. Phobias are something a person must be desensitized to over a period of time through gradual introduction to it (with a profession presiding over sessions of course). For example, showing a picture of it and using methods to keep a person calm is often a start. After the picture is no longer a problem, it may move to a video, a seemingly real association with the object which still keeps the person out of any possible contact. Next would be showing the object at a distance, the slowly moving the object closer over session. The eventual end would be to have the person in the situation which would have caused them the most panic. At that point, once the person could face that situation, they would be considered cured.

All this is just a long way of saying, meds will not help. It is something which must be gradually introduced to a person.

She's not afraid of water, she's afraid of swimming, or probably more precisely, drowning.

As the above poster was saying, she needs to get used to it. Perhaps one of the best pieces of advice to give is to tell her to turn her settings all the way up, and simply dealing with it. She said that she can still play underwater, she just doesn't like it, so maybe pwi could be a tool to help her get over the phobia.

Beleive it or not, i'm terrified of big, ugly fish mobs whenever I go underwater(NO i'm not referring to tideborn in any way.), but most of the time i've gotten over it.
I literally freaked out when I first saw the Ocean Tusker, and I still do whenever I have to kill stuff in the oceans...
Might be the reason why i've got 3 water quests looming around in my quest log... so I guess i'm a kind of hydrophobiac too.

I'm hydrophobic in certain cases in real life. [Mainly larger bodies of water, lakes and oceans and such, not swimming pools.]

I personally do find the water a tad creepy, like the way you feel, so whenever I have to do water quests, I have someone else with me for help.

I guess I'm a little hydrophobic in that sense too. I get really wigged out when I'm underwater, even in games. I always feel like something's gonna suddenly get me from behind. O-o So I think I know how you feel.

A friend tried to help me get over it by making me swim through the Sea of Reality (as I only started recently I only had under lvl 15 characters). I ended up coming across the dragons in that area. I had distances down low so they kinda just suddenly appeared. T-T Lowang I think it was called, and a couple others.

    Lowang ate me. >3>

BUT it wasn't that bad, and kinda fun in a way. Like how it feels to watch a thriller/horror movie. Scared during, then a big rush after.
