necessary? no. darn handy? oh yes, at least in the early game.

especially for someone with a lot of chars still being levelled up, having one of them specialize in each of the manufacturing skills can let you get the others decent low-level armor and weapons in a pinch. what you make is typically at least as good, often better than, what you can buy from NPCs, and occasionally better than what's available as quest rewards or mob drops at some given (low-ish, at least) level.

you'll manufacture a lot of duds along the way, true enough. those you decompose for chi stones to feed your genie or aerogear, or to sell for coin.

Everything that she said above :O And when you focus on one path of manufacturing, you can find a friend with a higher lvl manufacturing skill to help you craft, for example, a TT weapon or something. Therefore, you do not have to waste your time, effort, and money to level that skill up just for the TT weapon.

Thank you so much ForsakenX for the sig b:cute

I would recommend having all your manufacturing skills on your main character since higher levels of the manufacturing skills requires certain levels to be achieved.

For example, you can learn level 4 of manufacturing only at level 50 or above and not before (even if youre at 100% mastery of the previous level). Similarly level 6 at 80 and level 8 at 100.

Having 1 skill per character would make it difficult to level these past level 4 since that would mean getting each of your characters past those level ranges.

The blacksmith, tailor and craftsman skills also helps you a little more independant when it comes to manufacturing and decomposing equipment. If youre like me and hate to wait for a friend with the required skill level in any of these, I suggest you level all of them up.

Finally, I would also like to point out that levelling these skills actually takes a lot of work if you dont want to buy your way through. I have had to grind entire levels at 70+ to acquire sufficient materials just to level these skills.

Also, lvling up your crafting skills to 4 helps because you can manufacture your TT weaps and armor.

True there are a lot of people with lvl 4 crafting, but it's super helpful to have for yourself as well as for other people. You have no idea how many items I've made for factionmates. Plus you never have to wait for someone to get online (like Elviron said).

Also then there's no chance of you getting something made by XxxiiO__name_xxXx. XD

It's all pretty well laid out for you in the PWI wiki entry on Crafting.

    Hope that helps! b:victory

I personally never wasted money on manufacturing skills on my characters (and I was too lazy to farm enough mats). I just buy the weapons / armor I need, and if I REALLY want to craft something, I ask my friends who have high lvl skills... (Happened only once in my PW life! xD). The potions I find as drops are enough for me, so I never bothered learning apothecary either.

Well, my impression always has been that those skills are rather cheap, both on the money and spirit side. It's the drop penalty that really screws things up badly if you start late, but that should sort out eventually as the skills catch up with the clvl.

So far, I think I've only ever worn one item that I made, though. That's the other "problem" of not levelling up the skills right away :-)

Even the apothecary **** is still around... the "it costs a fee even if you don't sell" thingy on the auction house still prevents me from using it for anything, along with finding no information on the actual fee in case you sell.
Slow progress, game is getting way too grindy :-( Quests I still hope to be able to do some day: FB39, General Feng
