1. does inserting say a topaz (or other elemental gems) gem add earth damage to each hit of a melee weapon like a fist or a sword?

2. or are melee weps limited to garnet for increasing there damage (phys damage)

Actually about using elemental gem stone at weapon is good idea on some mmo. For example there was a mmo where after reaching lv 50 archer can farm mob drops like crazy, why ? (max lv on that game is not as high as PW)
Because on lv 50 there was a bow that has +50% wood damage as bonus. After adding 2 more orb that each add 25% wood damage, now the archer has a bow that dealing 100% wood damage.
And there a powerful lv 5x mob that has wood as weakness, and the weakness lv is make the damage increased by 100% if getting hit by wood elemental spell or attack.

Well you know what happen next . . b:surrender
Too bad PW not like that . . b:surrender

I wouldn't. Someone could correct me if I'm wrong, but if you're a meele character, the bonuses you get from skills are based on your patk, so it would be more useful to add a garnet in. Plus the atk bonus you'll get from adding an elemental shard would almost be negligiabe.

Elemental shards can be useful since high grade ones are dirt cheap compared to garnets. Particularly at lower levels, where masteries and stat bonuses don't play as strong a role, you can get more damage out of a high grade elemental. Though, if you're gonna go with an elemental, make sure you get the highest grade that your weapon can support, otherwise the fact that garnets get factored in for skills and sparks will make them the better choice.

I actually never really thought of that. Although if you do put it on a weapon, it would sort of restrict you against monsters that have that resistance against it, like water vs. fire. right?

Only the extra damage will be affected by the elemental immunity/boost.

So at worst you'll still do your normal weapon damage.

I'm using elemental shards on my minibarb, just because monsters drop them and it's better than just wasting that socket.
