Pet color not working

Got a collar from Mrs. Zoologist, tried to use her option for renaming pet but it is not working. I drag the pet icon in the drop box, type a name and press for rename but nothing happens. The collar is now taking an item slot. Please advise what to do.

    Also there is a limit to the letters used for the name.

    Unsummoning did the trick. I got confused because you have to summon them to teach something. My Glacial Walker is now SlamFist :)
