Just wondered what everyone used to record some gameplay in HD. I know a few of you do a great job recording things on PWI.

    Are you asking for a recorder?

    I'd like a better open source alternative to CamStudio myself. I hate these "free" recorders that either limit functionality, put a watermark, or something totally unnecessary.

    Granted, you need to turn off Aero effects with CamStudio to even get 30 fps on low quality (HD quality still is stuck at 15 fps or less.)

    Well, figured something out on CamStudio to make the framerate better... (this won't make the framerate better for most codecs though, only the Camstudio Lossless seemed to be affected by this.)

    1. Set bit color depth to 16-bits (Windows 7 will probably restore this to 32-bit when you restart.)

    2. DRASTIC Framerate Increase - Put resolution a step or two lower (IE: 1280 x 720 instead of 1600 x 900.)

    3. Tell your video card to do "Best Performance" for 3D.

    4. ALWAYS have Desktop Compositing Off!

    This may shoot the framerate up to 100 FPS for normal desktop screencasting, but for 3D it'll still go down to 30 FPS or so (which is still a whole lot better than 5 FPS like before.)

    (Also make sure you hit Optimize button on the game settings window.)

    I use fraps. I paid for it, but it's pretty great video quality and easy to use.
    Bladestorm lets you spin around like a carnival ride and do damage. Not using it is almost like having a move called Confetti Rocket Power Leap and saving it for "emergencies"

    If it's anything like WeGame, then I don't care for it. I want to be able to record my desktop too, not just my game. Though I'm not the OP.

    If you intend to record your desktop there are a lot of open source programs that are better for this: Fraps is intended primarily as a game recording program, and it does that beautifully. Though it should be noted that the files generally do record in large files, considering the video quality.

    I used an outdated laptop that probably shouldn't be running everything it's running and fraps still works for me.

    My poor laptop needs to be replaced as well. I'l probably get a new desktop once I pick up my paycheck this week though, I'll be able to run two things at once without graphic lag b:dirty

    My desktop can run less than my laptop....b:surrender I think we got it about 5 years ago.

    I don't think I've ever had top of the line, so at 5 years, all I have it do is catshop, not even in West District, and we have EVERYTHING uninstalled that's not necessary except for PWI, and...it still lags worse than my laptop when I run PWI, msn, skype, FF, and/or whatever misc stuff I have up.

    I've don't usually use desktop recording software, but TingleSoft is pretty good. However, I'd like to stress that you won't be getting exceptional resolutions or the like with freeware programs.

    Top of the line back when I got that computer was something around 2.3Ghz single core clock speed and 1GB of ram. My laptop lags when the only thing I have open is a game, because the graphics card is terrible and it's hooked up to a dual monitor setup. b:chuckle It tends to overheat as well, so I've got a ridiculous cooling setup. b:surrender

    As I said before, having the styles for windows on causes the FPS to be cut in half just about.
