Ancient Evil

So today I bought a shiny new gold HP charm for TW, other faction didn't show up as we expected them to so we rolled them and my charm ticked once the entire war. So I figured I might as well put the charm to good use and give ancient evil a try. It was me, level 96 mage, level 91 cleric, level 72 cleric, level 90 veno, level 91 veno. After a ton of trial and error we finally managed to kill AE (no gold mats b:sad)

The thing is, in doing so I used up about 500k charm, and 100 event HP pots.

Anyone have any tips to maybe help me reduce costs the next time I try?

Maybe try not letting your charm tick first in a TW where the other side didn't show up?

That will at least save you a pot or two next time you try AE.......

Go with a higher level cleric next time so you get more heals?

I had to armageddon the crystal Fuzzy, it's a requirement.

I'm far from an "expert" on AE:LV, but one thing I noted right away was that it's safer and simpler to kill off the adds one by one before taking on the big guy himself. If you split the party as seems to be conventional wisdom, it leaves a LOT more to go wrong. I'm sure you'd have smoother kills with a regular party and frequent practice, of course, but as a general rule, having the whole squad concentrate on one target is easier and safer for all involved, than dividing attention between four. Especially when one of them can so easily party-wipe you.

    As far as preserving charm?
-Keep Dew of Star or similar damage-reducers on hand & available. 10-20 seconds of spared damage is usually well more than enough to let the cleric on IH duty catch up with you.
-My genie doesn't have Solid Shield, but Abs. Domain helped a great deal when timed right.
-When choosing between Sunder & Invoke, go with Invoke - for same reason as Dew of Star above.
--Corollary - if you ARE holding AE down solo, conserve chi as much as possible and Invoke constantly.
-Pounce his face off. Seriously, cancelling should be a part of every barb's duty anyway, but in these cases it's especially important to spare yourself as much damage as possible.
-In the later stages, when random aggro takes effect, save Alacrity until you see him turn on someone. Then pounce him the second he does.
90% of the time when he turns it'll be to cast - cancelling that ought to restore him to you immediately. It won't work 100% of the time, but usually if timed right he won't even get the shot off and you're right back in control, chewing his flaming metal **** to shreds.

EDIT: I've been informed repeatedly that as a rule, to take on AE everyone must have at least 5k - 5.5k HP, to avoid being one-shot on the random-aggro / AOE hits. I'd be very surprised if your lv72 cleric was up to snuff in that regard, although I give them props for braving the waters anyway :)

Um.. were the clerics healing at all???

I don't think I spent so much charm tanking AE without a cleric when he died two times in a row & couldn't use a res scroll anymore...

Were the venos purging the boss when he was buffing himself? (I haven't done AE in a while I'm pretty sure he did that...)

Unless the Clerics were dead like the entire fight, there's no reason you should have burned so much in Pots/Charm. o_O

TBH, I find keeping the barb healthy is the easy part. It's keeping myself alive and reviving others that makes him tough (6k HP buffed with about 60% phys reductions and he still 1-shots my slow unresponsive **** to the tune of 7-8k easy).

I think I exxaggerated the charm loss a bit, when checking the screenshot of before and after the kill I really only lost 300k charm, still a significant amount.

Raging Tide server, it would be very difficult to find classes with good enough gear to have that much HP.

Nimpo and SC have been able to tank him for months b:chuckle Its nice to have good clerics, its nice to invoke / solid shield. Its nice to have BM buff. Its nice to have venos keep him purged, and its nice to not be charmed vs him. If you were worried you could keep a charm for when he gets to a mil hp, and equip it when party wipes. Its nice to bring an archer with heavenshatter bow for purge. If you go uncharmed its nice to save a couple sparks for invoke for when clerics need to rez each other or others.
